I've just watched the Panarama prog about gambling.
For the first half of the prog I am thinking, this is stupid, no amount of Govt control will stop people gambling. It is like telling an alcoholic that drinking is bad for you. You shouldn't drink more than x or y. They will get the booze from somewhere, or even make it themselves.
However. In the second half of the show I was shocked. They showed some poor buggers that having wrecked their lives, and were on the road to "recovery", they get a text from (Let's say Ladbrookes), telling them that they have had £1,000 put into their account "to get them back onto their feet".
That is an absolute disgrace!
Would a brewery send a case of Brandy to a recovering Alkie?
Any thoughts anyone?
I love having a bet, but we are talking a few pounds here and there. When I can afford to lose it and not care.

Life is full of temptations, resisting them makes you stronger.
My wife went into the petrol station to pay for fuel and was held up by a woman buying £25’s worth of scratch cards.....she was dithering over which ones to buy.
All very sad isn’t it, but that’s life.

They're only doing their bit to help keep The Samaritans in business www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-49511611Are the gambling companies funding the political parties?

4% of players make up 78% of losses. Jesus christ, can you imagine the scale these people must be betting on?!

I said similar to you a while back (apologies if I have got the wrong poster!), and you said similar to your first paragraph. What you refer to in your second paragraph is the kind of thing that made me lambast bookies in my post. Its not gambling as it used to be, Clem. Its absolutely thrown at people, and some of them will be problem gamblers. I love a bet, the same as you, but it's on a whole new level now, and as you say, it's not being treated like other vices.

Even more destructive are the alcoholics with a gambling addiction. Have a few drinks & then get online gambling sites. Lots of £ lost in a short space of time...

No coincidence that bookies are very often near pubs, either, is it? Definitely not. A few casinos I've visited abroad have been more than willing to bring free alcoholic drinks to the table whilst you're gambling, one in Colombo spiked my lager with their local Arrack spirit one night, I was quite thankful personally but it's not hard to see why they do it.

I love a bet, the same as you, but it's on a whole new level now, and as you say, it's not being treated like other vices. i still don't think that these "awareness" adverts and posters really achieve much. But a betting company bunging people a grand "to help them out" should be illegal. Surely?
I suppose giving new accounts £25 of free bets, just gets people on the slippery slope.
I honestly apologise for my previous posts - they were made in ignorance.

Cheers, Clem. I only know from personal experience, myself. It's going to become a huge problem in a few years, I reckon. All the best, and good luck if you do succumb!

The whole idea of "when the fun stops, stop" is total bollocks. It encourages a hap hazard approach to betting. IMO, If you are not taking every bet you place seriously then you really need to find some other way of spunking your cash away.
