Having a debate at work at the moment about what the best ever Stoke XI (and 5 subs) would look like, see below for what we've come up with.
Anyone you would add/change?
GK: Gordon Banks RB: Jackie Marsh CB: Huth CB: Denis Smith LB: Pejic RW: Sir Stan CM: Steven N'Zonzi CM: Greenhoff LW: Arnautovic FW: Ricardo Fuller FW: Stein
Subs: Shilton, Shawcross, Hoekstra, Shaqiri, Ritchie

This sort of discussion is always influenced by your age. Never saw Sir Stan except in his testimonial and never saw Franklin but they are automatic. Huth was nowhere as good as Bloor or Smith. TC is the best winger I have seen in a Stoke Jersey and Big John is the best striker. Shilton never played well for Stoke, so I would go with Farmer or Butland (pre-injury).
n’zonzi was a one-season wonder and could’nt hold a candle to Hudson.

This is pretty much impossible but fun. Mine would be something like:
Banks
Marsh Smith Franklin Pejic
Matthews N'Zonzi Hudson Shaqiri
Steele Grenhoff
Subs: Shilton, Allen, Shawcross, Bojan, Stein
Unbelievably that means no place for Bloor, Skeels, Conroy, Ritchie, Chamberlain, Dixon, Bould, Hoekstra, Fuller, Begovic, Arnautovic, Crouch and Butland who have all been superb players for Stoke City - and a couple of other teams.

Surely you have to pick the clubs all time top goal scorer in the first 11 ?

Was Justin whittle that bad ? Technically poor but he was pretty solid, not many won an Ariel battle with him, sure we’ve had worse centre backs.

Banks, Begovic Marsh Muniesa, Smith Huth, Shawcross, Faye Pejic Pieters Salmons Hoekstra Hudson, Nzonzi Kendall, Whelan Chamberlain Walters Greenhoff Fuller Ritchie Bojan English 11 v International 11 Stein was born in South Africa if you want him ahead of Bojan. One potential name for other thoughts (as a couple of thankfully called out Freddie Steele) - Frank Soo. Another who probably lost his best playing years to the war. I don’t think anyone here saw him play did they? Anyone’s Dads or Grandads profess to how good he was?

Banks had no equal as a goalkeeper. Alan Hudson,Jimmy Greenhoff and John Ritchie are head and shoulders above any others for their preffered positions. Of more recent players, I think an inform Arnautovic is as good as we've seen. The other positions are open to debate.

I have to go for players I've seen myself, not been blessed to have seen the likes of Conroy, Greenhoff etc...
Sorenson
Wilkinson - Huth - Shawcross - Higgy
N'Zonzi - Delap - Whelan
Arnautovic - Fuller - Hoekstra
I often wonder if Sambegou hadn't have gone AWOL and kept his form up, what a potential career he could have had for us.

Didn’t he score 6-7 on the bounce before doing a Houdini ? It looked like we’d signed a real goal scorer there for a brief period.
