Like lots that went to Charlton on Sat, I've spent the last couple of days with feelings of frustration, disappointment and confusion. The frustration comes from having a great chance of 3 points but coming away with nothing. the disappointment has a relationship with the frustration and the confusion comes from our fans that they feel that its beneficial to constantly "slag" off the club, team and manager.
It seems to be more vocal at away games and at one point last season I thought about missing a few away games as the constant barrage of abuse started to really get on my nerves. I can't remember it being like this when we were playing Stockport, Vale and such like in the lower divisions. Is this behaviour an output from a decade in the Prem? Yes we are awful at times and yes it makes we extremely unhappy but personally I would stop going before it got me worked up to a frenzy. It's actually turning into a competition with some people to see who can slag the players off the most. The more derogatory the comment the more laughs they get!
I can't work out why they put themselves (and others) through the trauma and heartache.

They are professional footballers being paid millions of pounds a week who can’t defend and can’t score and can only pass the ball around midfield at no great speed (and then only some of the time accurately). They shouldn’t need convincing. For what it’s worth I don’t blame the players, I think they are being hung out to dry in a system they are not suited to by the manager. I just don’t get the “blame the fans”. The fans were behind them on Saturday as I understand it and were at QPR at the start - everyone wants to get behind them but they are doing naff all to help the situation making basic errors week after week after week. |

If the players are upset by booing and their form declines as a result, how come they don’t score when they are being cheered on?
As was pointed out Nathan Jones Barmy Army was ringing out right up to the second Charlton goal- it didn’t stop some pretty schoolboy defending did it?
Poor poor footballers, we should take some Delarosa syrup for them.

Before the Premier we got about 11.000-15.000 attendances in our home matches... now we got well over 20k.
So thats one positive for sure, long may it continue!

The people who go to away games really get it and seem to have a more robust sense of humour (within reason.) as soon as we ship 3 to recently promoted charlton I fully get why people are fucked off. Specifically, at clucas - one bloke was going batshit and I thought, yeah actually he's been lazy as fuck and ineffective. Contrast where we are now with the best times of the prem. I think a lot of the fan base at away games wouldve been there before the prem anyway. It's just disillusionment with giving PL, GR & NJ the amount of time they've had and the results and performances we're still churning out |

Well it increased it but sadly gave some people a sense of entitlement
As to compare it to the days of the old third division it is completely out of context many of those days groups of lads stood together shared a gallows humour watching limited footballers earning not much more money than them work there bolocks off
And if they didn’t woe betide them
Now you have two’s three’s ECT sitting down watching a bunch of insipid footballers earning money that most can only dream of waltzing around with all the effort of dillion in the magic roundabout
And rightly voice there opinion

It's no wonder fans of other Championship clubs hold us in utter contempt when we swan round like we own the place and splutter inanely when we get beaten once again by one of the "lesser" teams. To be honest we deserve every piss take and derisive comment that comes our way - and the situation will only improve when we show the league and the other teams in it the respect they deserve.

I think most people's expectations are realistic. We've got one of the biggest budgets. Possibly the biggest wage bill. Arguably the most 'Premier League' squad of players in the division (aside of those just relegated). We've spent shitloads on players. And we've won 3 in 23. We finished 17th (maybe - lost interest in the table by the end?) last season. We're significantly underperforming as a club, on and off the field. We've let players go, deemed not good enough for us in the lower half of the Championship, now playing regularly in the PL. Failing to pick up a point against those two sides, QPR & Charlton - conceding 5 in the process? I don't give a shit who the manager is, or what the system is, that's wank. If I expect better, and that makes me arrogant and entitled, I'll take that. |

One thing it certainly did do, as I've said on another thread is make a lot of fans completely ignorant to the quality that pervades this league. The fucking hysterical reaction to the Duffy signing, with most posters not even knowing a player who'd been one of the best in the division we'd just come 16th in was testament to that. I understand it comes naturally after 10 years in the big league but when you're getting torn to shreds by players you haven't heard of, but are well known among the clubs in the league, it might be the case that you're simply ignorant and have your head in the Premier League clouds...not that the player is a "no mark".

Unbelievably, the away support at Charlton was actually fantastic up until that second Charlton goal. People need to realise that the fans are not the issue and they are entitled to moan and groan a little when they are spending their hard earned cash and getting nothing in return. It's not just happened overnight either, this has been three long years of utter dross now with very few signs of improving any time soon, I think the fans have actually been too patient at times.
It's got nothing to do with Premier League entitlement, people can see it with their own eyes. Where we were and where we are now is terrifying. Our fall from grace has been remarkable.

I don't know how you expect the fans to act when for 3 consistent years they have been served utter tripe for football. We've gone downhill, fast. You've got your team that had Xherdan Shaqiri, Mark Arnautovic and Bojan as your front 3, destroyed. Gone.
We are stick and tired of watching this club do fuck up after fuck up.

As soon as people realised the board was generally positive about Duffy. |

The point I think the OP was making is that if it is so unpleasant that a person is moved to scream obscenities at players, clearly they are not enjoying the "day out" and are making it even more unenjoyable for others. So why bother going to the effort. Why not spend the money on a trip to a good show or a splash-up meal in London instead? |

Firstly, I don’t boo the team at matches so you’re asking the wrong person Secondly, I understand the atmosphere at Charlton was excellent so I don’t know what you’re on about Thirdly, at QPR every single person around me was fed up - mumbling to the person next to them. Even the happy clappy end couldn’t muster a song. It’s just another have a pop at the fans post and I really don’t believe that you can have sat through the QPR game happily clapping away. But trying to explain it away as anything other than it’s because we have been absolutely shite for a long time is pointless. |

It’s a bit of a myth to say that the support in the 80s and 90s stood there with smiles on their faces and a song in their hearts as the club stumbled from crisis to crisis.
There was every bit as much moaning .....it’s just that it didn’t get broadcast to a wider audience.

I've found it quite interesting in that our older and younger supporters are in the "moaning or frustrated bracket" and a lot of our supporters who were born between say 1975-85 are in the "back the club get behind the lads no matter what bracket"
2 of our 3 generations have grown up with Stoke being a top flight side and are now frustrated, angry and impatient at wanting to see a swift return.
Our middle generation were different, growing up knowing stoke as a 2nd/3rd tier team and are now back in their perceived comfort zone of little old Stoke and wanting to see us punching above our weight.
I was born in 1990 so I feel inbetween generations here of having roughly half of my supporting life in the top flight but now back to where it all started.
I appreciate that this is a huge stereotype but that's kind of how I've seen it develop and dont think it's far off.
