Due to a number of very bitter experiences with this horrible football club and its truly odius supporters, Wigan Athletic are one of the very few football clubs where I will happily use the term; 'complete and utter hatred' to express my feelings for them. Because we didn't manage to sign Hugo Rodellega from them?

Yes an old wound, Theres one example I witnessed. Stans minute totally direspected totally and utterly by these 'non football fans'. The ensuing riot fairly and squarely blamed on stoke(yes reacted badly but provoked)( but clearly initiated by them as i witnessed it) and not helped by an 'all ticket' game having tickets sold on the day . I know this how ? . I was an incognito stoke fan sat in their main stand bought the ticket at their turnstile. Saw the whole thing and then drove home listening to one of their directors blaming it entirely on stoke on radio manchester ..a bunch of lying gobshytes. Just one example ... plenty more

There was also that Wigan goal at the Brit when fullback Manuel Figaroa scored from his own half against Sorenson. Mind you it did turn out to be Goal of the Season.

Right now Nathan Jones is to football what Eric Morecambe was to the piano ("I play all the right notes, just in the wrong order").
If he finds the "right order" in time to still be in this job by Christmas is the big question.

90 - odd % true there J.
(He doesn't have all the right players imo - I can think of at least one spot we're so obviously lacking in, it's untrue - but he has all the players he's going to get before January that's for sure.)
So while we should, in an ideal world, be throwing youngsters and maybes at Wigan, for me, the pressure is right on NJ and he needs to show this team can and will 'work' - and do so big time.
I was, and still am, as healthily scpetical as the next man about NJ so far but I actually think he's right in his presser. If Hulk or Gregory score any of those chances, we were out of sight in that game Sat'dee and win it at a canter. (Sorry to invoke the rule of "ifs, buts and maybes" but it's true.)
So rather than wait ano few days to see how well it can / should work, I'd prevail with this basic team and apologise to all the usual candidates for a cup match.
It needed a tweak or two don't get me wrong, it wasn't all just unlucky finishing agreed, but not a time to tinker 100% either.

I’d play the side he intends to play on Saturday and treat this as a league game, the more settled the side the better. He must have an idea of his preferred starting 11 by now, pick it and stick with it for 5 games.

If he finds the "right order" in time to still be in this job by Christmas is the big question. I like the analogy. I think Nathan has spent his time building a squad (two players for each position etc) but has not decided on a first eleven. Whereas I take the point the Championship is a long season with plenty of games, I think it's true that most successful teams have a pretty settled first choice 14 or 15 players. When he settles this we'll be ready for success.

I'd arguably say that's our strongest side, with the exception of McClean being at LB but it'd be my starting 11 for tonight. Butland (heads clearly not at Stoke) and Allen haven't performed well enough yet this season, so I'd drop them but I think we need to keep the majority of NJ's starting 11 for Derby on the pitch tonight to get them used to the diamond and playing together.

Federici Edwards CCV Collins McClean Cousins Etebo Verlinden Duffy Vokes Campbell That's the side I think he'll pick too Quite like the look of that - and it gives some players the chance to stake a claim for Saturday. Given we played well and only went to pieces after the subs I would have thought the starting 11 at Charlton would already be pencilled in for Saturday anyway. May as well rest them and keep them on their toes should one or two play well tonight. Also have to stick with the diamond so that everyone is familiar with it should they break into the starting 11.
