Hard to believe
That people went to a cinema to see that pile of crud, 'Buster' I mean

And Wezza had still to make his debut at YMCA Monday night 5-a-side, where he would later go on to gain legendary status for his silky skills.

Hard to believe That people went to a cinema to see that pile of crud, 'Buster' I mean Is the one where they try and rob a train or something? Yep, Buster Edwards dreadfully portrayed by Phil Collins. I remember it coming out as were protests in Crewe think it was. Turned out that the guy coshed in the actual robbery was local, I thought they were protesting about how awful it was at the time.

Mick Mills and Sammy Chung at the helm. It was a different world, so simple and uncomplicated. Imagime deciding half an hour before kick off if you fancied attending the match, parking next to the ground for free and walking up to a turnstile and paying a few quid to get in. All in the knowledge that 99% of weekend matches would be a 3pm kick off. Oh, how I miss those days of simplicity.

Some people actually regarded the train robbers as heroes. The train driver died a couple of years later, had it been sooner the train robbers would have been technically guilty of murder.

For context....
I was a 14 year old, used to jump on the PMT from Biddulph to Hanley, and walk through Hanley Park to the ground (even midweek games, cant imagine letting my kids do that now!)
I have bought every issue since #6 with George Berry on the front, it was 10p!
Have bought it religiously every week for 31 years....its made me laugh, its made me sad, I've had a couple of articles published, and a few letters
Through the magazine and messageboards over time I have met some wonderful people
The mag has seen the dark days of Mills/Ball and Division 3, the ups of promotion, the downs of relegation, an FA Cup final I never thought I would see, our place at the top table beating the best, and the abject boredom of the last 3 seasons where the mag was more interesting than the game, even during the game...
Me personally have got married, had 3 kids (eldest is 17 now and a ST holder with my 9yr old), I've died once (long story), but still had the Oatie sent into hospital for the one game I missed afterwards.
It will be a sad day on Saturday, and my Sat night/Sunday morning loo visits will never be the same again!!
Well done to Smudge and Dave, an epic adventure!

On an industrial front in 1988, Stoke area still had around 5 Coal mines, 1 Steel works and around 280+ Pottery firms. The pottery industry alone employed around 30K. Potters holiday(s) were commonplace where the entire workforce would go on holiday, typically during maintenance periods. Times have certainly changed on that front.

The mag has seen the dark days of Mills/ S As a point of order, four of Mills four and a quarter seasons yielded better results and better performances than last season! Is it the right time for it to bow out?!

Even after 16+ years of buying it, the first thing I still do is give it a massive sniff.
It's the smell of matchday for me.
Heartbreaking.
The second thing I do is turn to the centre spread for the cartoon. Hard Bastard was always my favourite, closely followed by The Burslem Boys.

Can anyone remember the T shirt that was sold outside the Vic back in the day?
It was white with a dodgy picture printed on the front of 2 x scantily clad ladies standing outside the old Ticket Office and it said 'nice girls go down to Stoke City FC'. My Mum went mad when I put it in the wash!

I got my copy of the final ever issue of the Oatcake through the post this morning. Many thanks for whichever kind person at Oatcake HQ who posted it out to me. I haven't been able to put it down and read every word of it. Some fantastic memories and stories of the highs and lows of supporting our beloved Club. It also made me feel very old, as I do remember as an 18-year-old buying the first ever copy being sold outside the Boothen Stand for the princely sum of 10p, and wondering what the hell it was. Many thanks for everyone who helped put it together over the years. It has been such a big part of the matchday experience, it will be strange not to be looking for one on Saturday.
