Does anyone know why? It's always been fairly busy whenever I've been in, although this was always before a gig at the sugarmill so that was probably why.

Seriously? Does castle get busy now? I'm 35 but back in the day used to be out all the time. Always remember Hanley being busier than castle though (in imho)

Heard the rates were about £50K a year. Need to sell some beer to cover that off Commercial rates have been crippling small and large buisnesses for many years. This is why many town centres have empty shops and pubs closing down all over the country. In the meantime local authorities continue to blame central government but continue to waste our money and executives take exorbitant salaries and enhanced pensions.

Always remember Hanley being busier than castle though (in imho) I can't say I bother with Hanley apart from the odd midweek curry night. Last time I passed through on a Monday (student night) it was a ghost town which is probably why places like Walkabout (surely one of the busiest bars) are shutting. Newcastle and Hartshill have a thriving craft beer/real ale scene.

Another nail in Hanley’s coffin, the council should have bent over backwards to keep them there. Piccadilly is Hanley’s last hope.
It was on the verge of being worth having a little crawl up there. Start at Mart’s, on to Klay for a pizza, on to Bottlecraft and then a taxi to Hartshill/Newcastle. I feel like it was something like The Ten Green Bottles away from the whole area being busy/interesting enough to stay there all day.
All nice places to sit outside with a beer in the sun, it’s just a shame that there’ll be homeless people walking up and down off their face on monkey dust, wearing their sleeping bag like a cape and screaming.

I don't know if they're allowed to legally, but if they are the council should be compulsory purchasing retail units in Hanley and subsequently letting them to (local) businesses at subsidised/discounted rates. It's staggering what market stall holders pay in rent alone in Hanley market, something like £140 p/w. No wonder the hall seems half-empty,you can only wonder what absent property owners must be charging for bricks and mortar units in Hanley centre, before you even factor in business rates too.

And that's the issue. I can walk to Hartshill, drink in the Sanctuary, Old House, Artisan Tap; stroll up to the Greyhound, Hop Inn, Little Vic and around to the Museum and Cask Bar. Or I could head down to 'Castle and go to Lymestones, Hopwater Cellar, Bridge Street Ale House, Mellards et al. I'm sorry but Hanley will have to go a long way to catch up. It just doesn't hold any attraction. My only recent experience of the place was queuing to get into the Sugarmill watching the walking dead from Century Street stagger past on dust.

Just walked down Picadilly about half an hour ago, plenty of people sat outside the hostelries where seating was available but it could be a lot busier with more outside seating.
When I looked on the council website a while ago it appeared they were charging businesses quite a bit extra if they wanted outside seating areas.
As SS says above, the council should be actively encouraging businesses in this area, chop rates to the absolute bone in order to get the area up and flourishing then when it is, they'll get their money and more besides.
Seems pretty basic stuff to me unless I'm missing something.

You can add the Beatles themed place near the Borough Arms Hotel, Wellers, Ten Green Bottles and Thirsty Giraffe to that list as well, plus even the cinema bar at Vue is better than most joints in Hanley.

Has to be one of if the not the worse city centre in the country.SOT has the unfortunate hindrance of having six small towns which have amalgamated into one city.Which is unique but also causes the problems what the city suffers from (financial)

I don't mind Hanley personally, enjoyed an hour or two there today, few homeless folk about, none of them aggressive, I found the God botherers outside Primark more tiresome/troublesome if I'm honest, it'd put me off going Hanley if they were all over town that's for sure.
Another issue Hanley has to deal with is the retail park right on it's doorstep, where you can pick up most of what you need and get free parking, I can't stand the place personally but it's usually busy enough when I've had to go there so it obviously has its fans.

I used to date a girl from Wolves and she said that Hanley reminded her of Walsall, which I don't think was complimentary 😂 She did like the Sugarmill rooftop terrace though.

I think it varies based on how many tables / chairs outside, but annual fee is about £1K for either 2 or 4 tables - can't remember which

Sounds reasonable if it's for 4 tables, I often wonder why what seems to work in Europe, with lots of tables and chairs outside places, rarely seems to be tried here, to me that whole area would be ideal.

Oh dear, bad news. If good things like Mart's can't get going the town is doomed. I really enjoyed Mart's, I wish the staff well in their pursuit of new placements.

A shame to see it go. You've got several businesses making a good go of it down Piccadilly. Food-wise The Quarter is a decent place for breakfast / lunch. Also, the Unicorn is worth a visit (Sue from Marts is going to be doing some work there now)

Heard the rates were about £50K a year. Need to sell some beer to cover that off Well they obviously aren't are they. Thats ridiculous. You can actually check what they are. The rateable value is 13k. They would have paid about 46p for every pound so about 6k. They would also have been eligible for small business rate relief which could have knocked another 50% off. So you might look at about 3k. Thats only 47k off what you said. That said there is fuck all money in beer. Back in 2002 we were selling Stella at £2.45 a pint and it was costing us about £1.50 put it on the table
