Curran's been very good today with the ball, moved it in the air well which we've really struggled to do all series. He’s been better than the inexecrable Woakes and the (unusually in this series) anaemic Broad. But I’m afraid that’s somewhat damning with faint praise. He’s going at near enough 4 an over. He may be moving the ball around a little but that’s all it is, a little, which at his modest pace ain’t likely to do much. Only Archer has looked the part today as a bowler. Meanwhile Smith moves remorselessly on. Edit: Curran just got his second wicket. And doing much better than my miserly comment above indicates. Well done young man. Still not in Archers league, but performing way better than Woakes. Meanwhile Smith moves remorselessly on. and now his third .
shades of Richard Ellison in '85

Yeah - he’s done well today. No doubt.

I haven’t won a single cricketing bet all summer, and it hasn’t been through lack of trying. To that end, I’ve bet on Smith to score a ton in the first innings. Hopefully that’ll do the trick. Thank you for your sacrifice

Don't know what the fuss is about .Smith's still scored fewer runs and at a lower average than Cooky down under in 2010-11.

That’s a fabulous bowling effort on a pitch that’s not up to much. Full marks to Archer and Curran.

Well - we’ve got a lead.
Superb bowling by Archer - a well deserved 6 wickets. Nice to have someone who can sort out the tail.
And a sensational catch by Burns - shades of Stokes at Trent Bridge.

Burns has caught quite a few beauties this series hasn't he? Excellent effort from Archer and Curran and well done to Woakes for getting Smith.

Burns has got two shocking LBW calls this test. Reviewed both without even consulting they are that clearly wrong.

Good session for us. Shame to lose Root in the last over. Be nice to bat all day and set them (him) a big target for tomorrow.

Australia will fancy their chances on this wicket. 2 days to knock them off. Smith can hit 200 of them and Warner is due a good innings.
I don't know why England resort to sloppy shots, they should concentrating on knocking Aussies out of the game

A couple of players playing Last Chance Saloon in this test - meaning Denly and Butler.
Performing well in dead rubbers shouldn’t mean much, but I suspect it means both players will retain their places going forward. So assuming Bairstow keeps the mitts, we will progress with the same top order that have just lost us the Ashes.
It is indeed easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is to get dropped as a batsman for England.

Buttler is a victim of his own success I think, he plays in every tournament going and has been non stop for over a year now and the start of the Ashes came around way too quick for him. I genuinely believe he deserves to be stuck with moving forward.

Just a little pedantic point , we haven't actually lost the Ashes, Australia have retained them or we have failed to regain them and if the series finishes 2-2 I am not sure it really qualifies as a dead rubber either. I am sure we have actually dropped one batsman for this Test, so even your last sentence is stretching a point. At the start of the day I would have taken batting all day and being 311-8 but after being 210-2 it feels that we have missed a chance to bat Australia completely out of the game. Mind you I intend to be half way up a mountain at 11:00 a.m. on Monday (with no mobile signal), so if this Test can be wrapped up by close of play tomorrow I will be more than happy!

That said, I’d give him the nod over Bairstow and Roy if that was the choice.

I've been a big advocate of Sam Curran for a while also, particularly in home conditions, so I'd be trying my best to get him in the side.. not sure how though tbh when everybody's fit.

Depends, but if the weather is reasonably sunny I am planning a loop from Great Langdale either up Crinkle Crags & Bow Fell and back via Esk Pike or if it is really clear than Scafell Pike and back via Bow Fell. I am now a fine weather walker. I don't like my glasses misting up and if I am getting up on the top I want to be able to "stop and admire the scenery" i.e. I am getting old and like a good excuse to stop and have a rest!

I don't know why England resort to sloppy shots, they should concentrating on knocking Aussies out of the game 404 is Australia’s highest ever chase, that was in 1948. There’s not a chance their current side are chasing this total down, even with Smith. You’re right though, we should have been looking at setting them a 500+ total and batting until lunch tomorrow to add a bit more wear to the pitch.
