"Story tellers" are what make listening to Cricket a fantastic experience for me. It's the main reason why I was so disappointed Talksport won the rights to England's away series, after 30 minutes of listening to their coverage I was bored out of my mind, absolutely zero talk about anything other than what was happening in front of them, it was like they were Robots with no personalities. Long live Aggers and all the TMS team. Without TMS I wouldn't have got into Cricket in the first place all those years ago. Totally agree - cricket commentary by itself becomes too sterile, it needs some embellishment to "bring it alive". What’s great is how new presenters come into TMS and continue the magic but with their own style - commentators like Dan Norcross, Charles Dagnall and Ebony Rainford-Brent who are all outstanding.

I'd agree with that although Gower is more of a link man / keeping it all together. It may be they just want more recent players too just dont give that cnut KP does not get a job Gower is an outstanding link man. Willis is an outstanding critic. Botham on the other hand is, let’s put it kindly, not as good a pundit as he was a player. That said, he is a better pundit than KP. Yes Botham was really there for his stories, Willis does layer it on a bit now for effect but it would be a shame if he was let go too. Maybe it is a case of cost cutting / consolidating as they seem to have younger presenters doing the blast and with the hundred coming up they will use them more plus Gower and Botham probably arent ones for travel lodge / premier inn type accomodation. If they do bump up someone hopefully its Rob Key as he generally seems pretty good.

I could see him taking over the Gower role. I'd be happy to see much, much less of Alex Stewart, Dominic Cork and Darren Gough.

I love Bob on The Verdict and Holding is fantastic in commentary, the fact is that they can't hold a light to the TMS crew and never really have.

The pitch looks like a bit of a road, not as much grass been left on as in recent matches at Lords.
Probably a result of Root’s whinging when we got made to look a bit silly by a bunch of Irish village cricketers bowling 70mph.

But Sky don't do too bad by comparison. One thing is for sure - both are a load better than talksport when it comes to cricket coverage.

Bat the day and we shouldn't lose the test given tomorrow is looking bad too from 1 onwards, but get done cheaply here and I can see us bottling it on the last two days.
Smith batted forever last time we played them at Lord's, hopefully Leach can give us some X-Factor against him being as though left arm is his "weakest" bowler to face.

So weird seeing the Aussies in red caps, lovely tributes to Ruth Strauss though.
Edit: The baggies are back on now!

I'm an old stuck in the mud, so I am glad to see that the Test Match is starting on a Thursday, like it should!
I know the batsmen have been told to go out and play their "normal" game, but surely someone should tell Jason Roy that he is allowed to have a look at a few early on and doesn't have to try and belt the cover off every ball he faces.

Not an opener in red ball cricket and never has been. It's shown in virtually every innings he's played in a white shirt.

If he nicks the second ball of the 3 then it's more forgivable at least he was on his stumps linewise, but the dismissal was appalling and an absolute nothing shot.

I had actually started typing after the first ball he faced. He had no real idea about the pace or bounce of the pitch and yet the first ball he had a wild slash outside off stump to a ball that he should have left 100 times out of 100. (Once he was "in" then a shot might have been appropriate)

Hazelwood's bowling has been superb. His worst ball was probably the one that got a wicket!

Last chance for Denly now surely?

This is where you've got to start worrying about Denly, when he looks in... ironically. There's something James Vince about him in that regard.

We need to carry on lucking it out until lunch then hopefully the seam movement will die a bit in the afternoon. There's still the slope, though, and Hazlewood's used it superbly.
Thank the Lord(s) that they didn't pick Starc. With him in tandem with Hazlewood we could have been 5 down in the first hour.

Burns is very attritional and not easy on the guy, but he’s finding some runs by really grinding it out.

Interesting that Roy's opening partner is at 5 on that list! But then again, Cook is also on it lower down. So, maybe this isn't that significant a measure.

Yeah in retrospect it probably doesn't mean that much without other factors taken into account (pitch/opposition etc) and a fair proportion of Burns false shots would have come in his 133 at Edgbaston so its probably a pretty pintless graphic!

116-4 on a pitch that has offered hardly anything for the bowlers. We’ll no doubt be bowling in the evening session.
Smith will be impossible to shift again on this road.
