It's a pity we can't tear up all the players contracts, then start again.

That could be that for Moeen I think..... Jonathon Agnew was pretty much on the mark when talking about Mo's wicket... "Not much Moeen could have done about that, other than maybe ask why he didn't bowl like that on this pitch yesterday"

A gargantuan display needed at Lord's now.

From 122-8 on day one to a 250-run victory before tea on day 5. What an absolute scandal.

Absolutely shocking "performance".
The Aussies were in real trouble in their first innings but we've somehow just handed the game to them. Abysmal performances with bat and ball by England.

122-8 aus 282-4 eng How? from these positions have we lost by 250 runs? The test was lost with the absolutely shocking application on Day 4. We had no ideas at all and our frontline spinner couldn't land it on a trampoline, they went past the tipping point way too quickly and at that point it was just about how long Australia would need.

Burns won't play that well again this series.
Broad has peaked.
I can't see it getting much better. It'll be Archer for Anderson at Lords but don't think they'll change much more than that.

If they don't drop Ali, then it really is nothing more than a boy's club. He's been off in all formats with his batting for years and his test bowling was just about the only thing keeping him in check. Lyon took 9 wickets but with how often we played and missed it could well have been 19. Ali was lucky to get what he did.

Archer's got a solid first class batting average too, always had him down as a decent slogger.
Might be a bit like Broad pre-nose break with his batting?

"Not much Moeen could have done about that, other than maybe ask why he didn't bowl like that on this pitch yesterday" Yep his time is up, his batting may have saved him from time to time but that’s shot so he needs to go. Interestingly Smith’s worst average in test cricket is against left arm spin, so another reason to bring in Leach....

One thing that hasn’t been mentioned much is the pitch. That was probably as close to an Australian wicket as you could get in this country. I wouldn’t expect to turn up at the Gabba and be met with a green seamer so why did produce a wicket like that?

Yeah it’s disappointing, that said it was breaking up and turning square on day 5 which is what you want from a test pitch, the difference ultimately was Anderson’s injury and Moeen not turning up. If we’d have had Lyon we’d have possibly been chasing 150 not 380......

Leach should just have been there full stop, Moeen was belatedly dropped from the ODI side and we instantly improved. They can't even argue from a point of strength RE his batting. I like Moeen, he's given us some great summers with bat and ball in various formats but the guy needs a break or something because there's a shadow of a cricketer there.

Day 4 I think Bumble referred to the drainage and they'd been having big problems with it ahead of the test. Not sure how much it would have impacted it, but a factor.

Has anybody found 11 spines in the Birmingham area, a team has lost theirs.

If we’d have had Lyon we’d have possibly been chasing 150 not 380...... Even a green wicket would offer plenty to the spinners on day 5. Not that a match between these two sides on such a wicket would make it to day 5. I saw comments from Langer and Paine a couple of days before the match and they were both surprised at how brown and dry the pitch was as they were expecting a more traditional English wicket. Just having a bit of live grass on top is enough to mentally win the battle against some touring players. Just feels like the Aussies probably had a bit of a confidence booster when they first saw the wicket.

Only woakes can come out of this test with any credibility really, Best did well but I can't see him hitting another century. Can't really criticise Broad. Foakes, Leach and Archer in. Could change another 2 as well.

My team for Lords would be:
Sibley Burns Root Roy Stokes Buttler Foakes Woakes Archer Leach Broad
The likelihood is though it will just be Leach for Moeen and Archer for Anderson.

That would be my team too. And I agree those will be the only two changes we make, especially after hearing Root after the match saying it’s important we don’t make any rash selection decisions after the defeat.

Same for me as well. Frankly anything other than that suggests it’s not what you do, but who you know. Yes - I’m looking at you Mr Bairstow. That selection would send out a message to everybody that nobody’s place is guaranteed.

Same but Curran for Foakes. Another decent bowling option and is more than decent with the bat. Good as he is, and he is a tidy player, Curran ain’t good enough with the bat or the ball to get a place. What England need to do is get the basics of selection right meaning: Pick your best 5 batsmen (including specialist openers) Pick your best all rounder Pick your best keeper Pick your best spinner Pick your best 3 seamers Applying that approach, Curran doesn’t make it. Which is why he shouldn’t make it.
