Wouldn't surprise me if Championship cricket becomes dead as a Dodo. White ball cricket is what people want to watch (other than the Ashes of course) Next step will be white ball two day internationals. 100 overs per side per day. Progress?? Who knows.? 2 day internationals? Have you just made that up? never ever heard that given a mention. Just remember where you heard it 😁

We've been abysmal. It's been slightly covered by some individual performances digging us out of the shit but as a squad we've been so poor. I can't believe we were still in it until 5 ours ago. The Aussie's haven't been a great deal better, Smith aside. Their bowling attack has been good and covered for an equally shit batting line-up. Some serious thinking required. Imagine if we were facing Warne?

I'd be tempted to stick with Denley. He's got a lovely technique and apart from taking his eyes off the odd bouncer, he's got no major weaknesses to exploit. A couple of decent knocks in this series too in difficult circumstances. Jason Roy has been a joke. Overton put him to shame yesterday.

A couple of decent knocks in this series too in difficult circumstances. Jason Roy has been a joke. Overton put him to shame yesterday. Denly has no idea how to cope with the bouncer - a serious deficiency in a top order batsman never mind an opener. We have to ditch him after this series. Roy’s problems are in basic technique. He can’t defend. As you say Overton showed him how to bat. A shame b cause he obviously has talent. He needs to fix that deficiency in his game if he is to play test cricket. I suspect Roy’s time may be up if Stokes can’t bowl in the last test. He will make way for Curran. He can’t complain.

Who should take over from Bayliss after the 5th. Test?
How about Andrew Strauss?

Who should take over from Bayliss after the 5th. Test? How about Andrew Strauss? With a relatively young family to bring up would he want the amount of travel and months spent away from home at the moment? p.s. Congratulations to Sir Andrew on his knighthood. p.p.s. Now Sir Geoffrey really is Sir Geoffrey, I hope the Queen will use a stick of rhubarb for the ceremony.

Who should take over from Bayliss after the 5th. Test? How about Andrew Strauss? Think they’ll end up playing it safe and go with either Chris Silverwood or Ottis Gibson. I would have liked to see someone like Mickey Arthur, no nonsense who wouldn’t stand for constant batting failures. I think someone with a firmer hand would be better for Root as a captain too.

Roy and Overton dropped, Woakes and Curran back in. Stokes to play as a specialist batsman.

Roy and Overton dropped, Woakes and Curran back in. Stokes to play as a specialist batsman. Makes sense. Woakes should never have been dropped. Curran is, at best, a 4th seamer so the only way he plays is if Stokes either doesn’t play or can’t bowl. It will be interesting to see how he does in this test. From what I’ve seen he is more Mo Ali than Ben Stokes. Meaning neither his bowling or batting is good enough. He got found out in the Windies tour earlier this year, which the Aussies will have taken note of. Hope he proves me wrong.

To put it in to perspective, at his age (21) Steve Smith was a leg spinner who batted at No 9 and was considered by most commentators as mediocre at best. If (and it is a big if) he continues to develop it seems most likely that he will become a batting all-rounder

I haven’t won a single cricketing bet all summer, and it hasn’t been through lack of trying.
To that end, I’ve bet on Smith to score a ton in the first innings. Hopefully that’ll do the trick.

You’ll not get much of a return on that bet. Suggest you throw a few more pennies towards him converting that to a triple century.

I bet on Smith to be the top run scorer at the World Cup, his lack of runs there and Warner’s outstanding form coerced me to bet on Warner being top run scorer for the ashes. So you can probably thank me for the series Warner has had.

If he bags a pair you should write to the ECB and claim some compensation from them.

I’ve only bet on the first innings unfortunately. Someone else will have to find a way of getting him in the second innings. If he bags a pair they should name a box after me at the Oval.

Australia putting us in to bat on a great looking batting wicket. For some reason it seems that they are confident of skittling through our batting line up

However, the reality is rather different when it comes to our batting we'll see.

Probably the only name that hasn't been mentioned for a recall is Gary Ballance at 3? Absolute run machine for Yorkshire, but had a real deficiency in his technique where he hung back in his crease against the quicks and constantly got caught flat footed.
Haven't seen enough of him to comment but if he's worked at getting that out of his game then he'd be the obvious choice with Root going back to his preferred number 4......

He was dropped once to go away and work on his technique but when he came back he still had exactly the same issues. On that basis I would suggest that he is either unable or unwilling to address his deficiencies.

Yeah I get that, still averaged 38 and hit 4 centuries though which some of the latest lot would kill for..........
