I’m usually disappointed when one the best players around misses out through injury. I’ll make an exception with this one though as not being able to get him out was really starting to get on my tits.

Definitely the right call, it would have made a mockery of player welfare if he'd have been allowed to play. Added bonus that he's their best batter as well......

He should probably sit out the rest of the series too. You can’t be too careful with concussion.

I know they did the tests (which are in my view not stringent enough yet, most concussion symptoms develop after but that doesn't mean it hasn't yet occurred.) and whatnot but it was absolutely ridiculous to send him back out in that innings. You simply don't recover from a blow like that in half an hour and the amount of adrenaline that was flooding his system will have been going round for a fair few hours likely obscuring the symptoms. If he got hit again anything could have happened He was hit in a nearly identical position to the late Phil Hughes and it could have been really really nasty. I'd would have had him having a scan almost instantly.

I'd would have had him having a scan almost instantly. Absolutely agree that he should not have come out to bat again. It's pretty obvious he wasn't thinking straight from how he battled. It's also has to be the case his hand eye coordination was also affected. As you say adrenaline will mask some symptoms particularly as far as Smith himself is concerned, meaning you cannot base a decision on his fitness on what he says. I remember breaking a thumb really badly fielding in the slips (a double dislocation and triple fracture in case any of you are wondering) but carried on playing (albeit the captain acceded to my request to come out of the slips - he put me at short leg!). Some new protocol needed methinks.

I wonder if the bouncer will ever be banned?

I wonder if the bouncer will ever be banned? It might help if batsmen started watching the ball instead of turning away when they duck.

Remember how they limited short bowling when the Windies did it best? Not suggesting that they should, just throwing it out there.

There is a limit to the amount of short bowling (because of the West Indies) but the ball that hit Smith wasn't actually that short. He had to duck down quite a bit for it to hit him where it did (the ball rose to no more than chest high). I just think that as it has only really been Australia using short pitched fast bowling in Test cricket in recent years (and it almost never being used in 20 / 50 over cricket), most (all) of the batsmen are out of practice and their comfort zone.

You remind me of that legendary bowling spell by Michael Holding v Brian Close back in 76. There was loads of anger in the press about short bowling, but, as Holding pointed out correctly, he wasn't bowling bouncers.

Ollie Pope called up as concussion cover for Roy....fresh from a double hundred too.

Ollie Pope called up as concussion cover for Roy....fresh from a double hundred too. Let’s hope Roy wakes up with a bit of a headache in the morning. Really rate Pope, he’s a fantastic number 5 or 6. You’d think if he was to replace Roy though he’d bat at 4 with Denly moving up to open.

No better way to get over another Stoke defeat than the start of a vital Ashes Test match.

Looks like the Aussies have dropped Bancroft, which is a great shame.
And Pattinson is coming back in for Siddle.

Bancroft's ban was actually protecting his average Yea Harris is replacing him. Different type of player to Bancroft, likes to get bat on ball and play his shots. Last I heard he was having a few problems with the short ball though so will be interesting to see how he gets on with Archer.

The pitch looks like another road. Very disappointing there’s hardly any grass on there again. It's normally a pretty fast one though, which again if there's no movement if a bit of a concern given our bowling aside from Archer. I remember Mitchell Johnson and Siddle (in his pacier days) decimating us on it in 2009.

I remember Mitchell Johnson and Siddle (in his pacier days) decimating us on it in 2009. I think it is has slowed down a bit over the last couple of years. Langer and Paine have both said it looks like it’s going to be dry and slow like the Lords pitch. I’d be tempted to have a bowl if we win the toss. Looks very gloomy there today with plenty of sunshine forecast from tomorrow for the rest of the match.

The way this morning looks and the way the pitch looks has "captain fucks up toss" about it no matter who wins it. Really good toss to lose IMO.
