His positioning is definitely a bit wank for a right-back. But he has many other positives (Fast pace, good crosser, can beat a man, long throw-in). his positives outway his negatives for me Not when we're already looking shit at the back, we need it to improve not get worse.

Seemed to play well enough in the Prem. More pace than the rest of them put together. Perhaps we should save him for our imminent return to the top league !!.

I don’t know if his signing in the January window could (should) have been no more than a loan because of the real uncertainty where we be the end of the season.
Whoever sanctioned his signing on a full contract, then extending it demonstrates a level of incompetence that reflects our current position and astronomical financial losses

Surely something like positioning can be worked on ? I’ve always had that view with him. I hate how we’ve become a club that write off players after a few games. Sure at least one of our recent flops would have come good with the right coaching and encouragement.

Surely something like positioning can be worked on ? You’d think though that positioning, formation, tactics etc are coached to every player every day.... I’d question why he’d need extra coaching on it if he isn’t ‘getting it’ after many years of it being drilled into him? I’d imagine positional sense is a pretty basic thing for any footballer.

Of course managers should look to work with and improve players but the players have to want to improve and work at it themselves.

Looked to be this real level headed pilot, piano playing professional... then it all went wrong, again.

I'm not rewriting history at all. The history of the signing of this particular player, his long term contract, contract extension and failure to nail down (to-date) regular start at SCFC is a matter of fact and can be classed as “poor business” 2. He was one of our better players in the relegation season. All about opinions. See 4 below 3. I’m really pleased that 95% of this board thought it was a fantastic coup. I’lll bet the same % thought Jese was. Unfortunately two managers “on” disagree. 4. Hindsight is brilliant isn’t it. After watching him three times I was quite open in my concern to friends about Bauer and his complete lack of spacial awareness that pulled central defenders out of their central areas of defence.......a poor defender, a liability

Every player has bad games and poor periods of form. If a player was deemed good enough for us to pay a fairly large fee and for us to extend his contract then we shouldn’t be writing him off on the basis of a few poor games, especially when those were games when the rest of the team were also poor.

Those bad games didn’t all come at once though, whenever he got another chance at various stages of the season he was flat out terrible. The fact that he failed to impress, to varying degrees, his last four managers as a defender suggests it goes a bit deeper than unfairly writing him off.

Surely something like positioning can be worked on ? It depends. On a lot of things. For starters the coaches must find a way of making the player fully aware of his inadequate defensive ability. That's not as easy as it sounds. If a player like Bauer has played internationally and has a good senior career behind him playing rb, it might not make sense to be told you're good player but you're not good enough defending. If we compare him to McClean - by no means am I saying he's a quality player, but he has shown a willingness to listen to suggestions and take them eagerly on board. Bauer might not have shown a similar willingness, which then can be seen as unfortunate or he can be viewed as a problem boy. At some point, the manager and coaches are just going to have to move on for the time being, if they're not seeing any progress or because they have more pressing issues at hand. Then whether an international player, perhaps even star for his country, can accept playing a number of weeks or months with academy players honing those skills is another side to it. But I don't exactly what's gone on behind the scenes, if there's a different reason why successive managers have not taken to him, or whether he's shagging somebody's wife or whatever.
