I can't do with him, and I don't know why. You know when you just take an instant dislike to someone?

That "character" he played on Phoenix Nights was just him wasn't it?! tbh, I was all set to hate the new Top Gear but I've enjoyed the first 2 episodes.

It's far better than the previous lot, although to be honest I did like Matt LeBlanc - he was half decent.

Thought it was pretty good. Watched it once since JC etc until this series. The ginger gnome was an abomination as he is with everything he does. Le Blanc was just too cool for Top Gear

It's very laddish and heavily set up / scripted. But then so were the best moments with May, Hammond & Clarkson.
It's entertaining, though, and that's what sells. The electric shock section may have been utterly predictable but it was very funny indeed.

Le Blanc was good in the OB stuff but in the studio with the guests he was bloody cringeworthily wooden and bad.
Scripted stuff, yes
Interaction with other humans, god no

My only issue is that since the 3 left, Top Gear seem to want to just do exactly the same and "script" the lines for the new presenters as if they were Clarkson, May and Hammond and that just doesn't work.
The appeal of the "original" 3 (yes, i know none were the original Top Gear presenters) was the fact that even though the "storylines" were scripted, their friendship, chemistry and cameraderie was authentic. It was 3 mates who'd known each other for years having a laugh and that's why blokes loved it so much...they could sit there thinking "That's what me and my mates would be like". That just isn't the case with all the new lot (last series or this).
Top Gear would be better off scrapping the format that Clarkson left them and just trying something more "natural" with whichever presenters they have nowadays. Last couple of series, they're just trying to get the presenters to basically immitate C, M & H so it just seems far too forced for me.

Yep, I think you've nailed it there. The best bits with Flintoff, McGuiness and Harris are unscripted and spontaneous. Chris Harris and deadpan Freddie work well together. I'm yet to be convinced by Paddy McGuiness.
But could they please get the ginger t0sser Chris Evans back in for a one-off special. 60 minutes of giving him electric shocks.

I think it works quite well, certainly compared to the previous two attempts. I have actually laughed a couple of times, which is better than the cringing I used to do when Chris Evans fronted it. He really does need to stick to radio.

Clarkson may and hammond lost the plot in the end.

I just want to see a car programme that reviews regular cars and looks at some modern classics with a focus on the spannering - none of this comedy bollocks or doing a car up to make a mock "profit" (Wheeler Dealers where the cost of the labour is never factored in) or Car SOS where there has to be some sloppy-arsed back story (dad can't wield a spanner since he had his strapadictomy) - is there such a thing - nah.

I get that, but the Beeb’s programmers would say that there are loads of internet video sites (Carwow, for example) where you can get that and look at Fifth Gear for an example of a half-arsed attempt at doing a Top Gear as it used to be pre-Clarkson. I remember when the likes of Chris Goffey and William Woollard went around reviewing the latest Citroen family hatchback back in its 1990s format and it was a little bit dull. Think of it these days as a reality entertainment show on a car theme, rather than a review programme.

Top gear became a global powerhouse with this format though. Internationally made the bbc an absolute fortune.

Top Gear is and always has been fucking gash.
Freddie "I'm a reet lad" Flintoff is a massive bellend who thinks he's an absolute pisser and same goes for his twat of a mate McGuinness.

Think of it these days as a reality entertainment show on a car theme, rather than a review programme. I was watching a Top Gear clip on YouTube the other day. Tiff Needell was reviewing the first iteration of the Honda Civic as it has just come to the UK. A far cry away from the current iteration of the show. Went over all the specs of the Diesel, VTEC and higher end VTEC models with BHP, 0-60, handling etc... And did an actual review on it based on how it drives for the everyday driver, cabin space, seat to wheel distance, pedal feel and even the upholstery. It was reminiscent of what Carwow does now on their YouTube account with Matt. Actual car reviews. Interesting we say pre Clarkson, Clarkson was involved from 1990 I think. I admit as someone who has been raised on the new Top Gear, I loved the Trio. Being born in 96 I watched Top Gear from it's 2002 reboot. But watching the old Tiff clips was pretty interesting I must say.

Although Clarkson was one of several presenters during the 90s, he became the main man in its rebooted format in 2002 with ultimate creative and editorial control. I really like the Carwow reviews; it’s my first port of call when getting up to speed on what’s out there. TBH I think Matt Watson would have made a good TG presenter with his relaxed, blokey persona, certainly as good as Chris Harris.
