Jones is like virtually every British manager going - has to have his own players brought in. Simply will not develop existing players. No wonder generally they are all pretty poor managers. That is a worrying trend at the top of English football but I think judging him by his history he is the antithesis of that. Especially looking at the academy players he developed at Charlton. In my opinion, we are operating under a ticking clock before the parachute payments run out and we need to throw the kitchen sink at it. If he’s got an eye promotion next year, he’ll want players further along in their development - in terms of required attributes (smith) and familiarity with his playing style. He’s skirting the line between using existing resources and putting his stamp on the squad quite well to be honest.
Signing 9 new footballers and 2 more apparently on the way suggests he's not the antithesis at all.

You’re right, that would be a bizarre conclusion to come to, I’m glad I didn’t come to it.
Aiding his development would be fantastic but isn’t the be all and end all goal. It’s balancing the two - playing the most effective side for the system and facilitating his development. I don’t think it’s clear he doesn’t rate him at all. My instinct is that he feels he doesn’t quite possess everything he wants in a wing-back but thinks he has the potential to. Jones is like virtually every British manager going - has to have his own players brought in. Simply will not develop existing players. No wonder generally they are all pretty poor managers. Its very fashionable to bash British managers and I don't get it. I am not sure kieron tripper, David Brooks, callum Wilson and John mcginn get it either. Surely of all the managers in the premier league, the three that can be least accused of buying success and not developing their own players are... Sean dysche ( haven't noticed kieron trippier, James tarwoski and Ben mee failing to develop their game) Chris wilder ( David Brookes hardly struggled to improve) and Eddie howe ( can't say I have noticed callum Wilson and Co failing to improve their game). If Dean Smith can't bring on a player how come man utd want to pay 50 million for John mcginn and oli Watkins is wanted at Brentford. Perhaps kieron trippier, callum Wilson, Ryan frazer,David Brookes, oli Watkins and John mcginn, have faith in British managers, because they have improved their game, and made them rich?

Mary’s latest drivel is that Jones has done nothing right since he got here !! You get more bizarre in your agenda driven drivel with each post. Can we possibly stop harping in about the past ? It’s still with us yes but stop ramming it down our throats and move on, Jones cannot sort this out in six months. Get real. SUPPORT the future ffs. We go on about the pizza boys - yes we get it. Stop repeating it gets boring. Perhaps as someone suggested on another thread the culture of the moaning mentality on this board has to change. There’s a difference between rational debate and the tripe you post Mary What has he done right? Certainly not win enough games of football. That is the big worry, mate. He reminds me of Alan Ball to such an extent it frightens me.

Yup and it’s ridiculous to have 2 right backs who both will expect to play 40 games. And then have 3/4 left backs or players that can play there. It’s unbalanced shite. But hey the good folk of Stoke are happy for some reason I can’t fathom.... Don't worry Bayern! One day it may dawn on you! As the season progresses and Jones enjoys more and more success you are going to swallow some humble pie and realise that you are basically wrong! I will gladly do that. We still won’t have needed Tommy Smith mind.

There’s a difference between rational debate and the tripe you post Mary I don't disagree with your analysis, that's all fine, but is it all possible to comment on someone else's posts without using the word 'agenda'!!!! It's become one of the the most misused words of the 21st Century imho. Agenda means ...a plan, things to be done, matters to be acted upon..........but somehow it's used on forums like this as a tool to assert that someone else's view must be wrong just because they have one! Apologies, but this word drives me crazy!!!!! Do you literally mean that or are you talking figuratively? Just saying.
At the end of the day, with all due respect and to get back to the point, I personally think Tommy Smith done alright today, to be fair, OK? As for the use of "agenda", IMO it is what it is, at this moment in time, alright? Do I make myself clear? Seriously though, if you actually choose to reply to this post, thanks in advance.

Signing 9 new footballers and 2 more apparently on the way suggests he's not the antithesis at all. Who specifically do you want him to improve out of the current squad? Tom Ince and Benik Adobe for example? Two players you have slated as being not fit for purpose? Afobe, to quote you when we signed him, "a camel" ? Jones is like every other manager in world football in that he can improve players that are fit for his style, hence why in under two years he has made Premier League full backs out of a Reading reject winger and a youth academy graduate at Luton. Look a bit closer at Man City and you'll find Pep Guardiola has signed around 20 first team footballers in three seasons. He didn't win the Premier League in his first season because by his own admission he didn't have the tools to do it. This isn't a Jones problem or a British manager problem. EDIT: Klopp also signed 17/18 footballers in four seasons, including a world record fee on a centre half having already previously signed two in his time there. Weren't there any youth graduates or players already in the club that he could develop?

Correct; it’s an agenda problem by many on here.
