33 years ago. You might find it hard to to believe just how much this lifted some dark clouds over the English game. Not just at the tournament in general. I like this clip because it shows the players were so nervous early in the game.

Great memories. It’s often overlooked nowadays what a great goal scorer Gary Lineker was, he’s almost become a figure of fun in recent times.

I wasn’t allowed to stay up and watch the game as it kicked off at midnight UK time. So instead, I listed to my transistor radio in bed as Gary Lineker scored the hat trick that sent England through. Very memorable for some reason 😁

Of course England hadn't scored up until then. I always thought that 2nd England goal was the best in the tournament, was fantastic play. (After Maradona)
Boniek, like Paul Breitner before him was a huge critic of England and had plenty to say before the game. Fantastic player though.
Didn't Poland end up meeting Brazil as a result of this and England Paraguay?

Them two pennos v Cameroon sum it up. Balls of iron. Ten goals in two world cups. Unpopular opinion but I thought we were poor against the Argies in the quarters. Very sloppy and ponderous for 80 minutes and despite the controversy of the first goal, the better team won on the day.

We had one tactic like everyone else against Argentina... hack Maradona. And like everyone else it didn't work. For all the blarting about the hand of god, we'd barely got out of our own half at that point. Also it;s easy to overlook the other players Argentina had. Burrachaga and Valdano were fine strikers and late in the game Olarticochea did the best bit of defending in history.

Maradona bossed the Semi v Belgium, despite that goal Argentina were the better side v England as you say but had it been ruled out, Maradona would have missed the semi if booked as had a yellow in the previous game for breaking the wall so would have had further consequences. I think was one of those games that England regretted their approach after the final whistle. On a slight side note, Argentina were expecting to wear their home kit v England but told it clashed, they actually bought the blue kit in a shop in Mexico and had to sew the badges on the day before. Maradona liked it and said they'd beat England wearing it.

They were a good side defensively aswell, curiously with a centre back named Brown. Bobby should have started with Barnes or Waddle. Hodge and Trevor Steven were industrious but limited. As Barnes proved when he came on late in the game, we needed an outlet.

France had to wear green and white stripes of local team, Kimberley

Interesting side story that, is that the reason why we had to wear those light blue shorts?Bobby was too cautious In his team selection for me.

Was a question on Pointless last month- players to have scored in a WC final since 1970. Got Jose Luis Brown and Dirk Nanninga Lots of Irish in Argentina- and Germans allegedly

The shirt had to be made by Le Coq Sportif so an Argentinian official had to find a shop with enough kit for the team. I think they bought more than one and Maradona chose the blue
