Few raised eyebrows when Lou splashed the cash on Steino after an average loan spell. What followed though was a great time we had home or away watching the little fella!. Lou knew though didn't he and I thank him for that and all the good times. Happy birthday wee man. He'd impressed without ever looking like being a goalscorer. From memory though there were signs that Bertie looked a better player alongside him. By accident or design, Steino always seemed to get the best out of his attacking partner, whoever that was.

People always romance the past though. We were a top team every season with a steel tight defence in the 70s if you believe all which of course we weren't. Were more a mid table to bottom half side in reality. I've made no claims about that Macari team of the third division years. If I tried to make out they were a better team than we had in the Premier League years (well most of them anyway), then I'd be setting myself up for ridicule, and your 'nonsense' comment would be justified. I and I think those of a similar mind are just talking about how that Macari team made us feel. For me, it was the best feeling I've ever known as a Stoke supporter. I have no problem accepting that other people will feel that way about Waddo, Durban, Pulis or Hughes' teams. Agreed about the feeling. Although I was in my late teens and early twenty’s when Lou was in charge, so a good time in life generally!

92/93 remains my favourite season in my Stoke supporting life...couldn't give a fat one that it was in the 3rd tier

Some things can't be measured by win percentages and assorted footie statistics
It's not nostalgic or romantic for older stokies to regard lou, as highly as they do
He was an inspiring manager, who had huge positive impact on the atmosphere of the club and the way the team played.
He was never going to win the European champions league at Stoke, but in a similar way to klopp at Liverpool, he got the players, the fans and the town behind him.
He is held in high regard, because he deserves to be.

The comparison with Klopp is a good one - not in terms of the success or the level at which it was achieved but the way that the club and manager are a perfect fit. Klopp gets Liverpool and Lou just instinctively “got” us and the city. He knew how the fans would respond to certain types of players and he made us proud to follow the club in a time when we were quite frankly, shite.
I can remember losing at home to teams like Chester City and being on the grass bank at Wigan the season before and, as an impressionable teenager, thinking this is how things would be and I’d better get used to us being toss. Lou came in at the perfect time and galvanised us. Drawing at Anfield in the last minute that first season made me dream that things could be different and I wasn’t alone as we took thousands to many of the away matches.
The promotion season to the prem, beating Arse, Utd and Citeh at home, Spurs away, scoring 5 at Wembley, being in the square in Valencia- all amazing memories I wouldn’t swop. However, that feeling at Peterborough away when Warey’s free kick went in, running across the pitch at Blackpool in the pissing down rain, the Delilah at Wembley and flipping my lid in the Hamil when Steino buried the ball at Vale Park are all the stuff I still see in my dreams and they still come up in the boozer when we talk about our favourite stoke games!
Great times on and off the pitch!

It is sometimes all about timing. We were going through a massive downward spiral up to the point Lou arrived. For me I was 11 years old, so just starting really, and it's the start of all my memories of beginning to follow and love stoke. That period of time with Lou was simply amazing for me. I don't think I'd be so passionate about my club if it hadn't of been for that period. Loved it, loved the team, loved the atmosphere, loved the ground, loved the kits. Happy birthday Lou How many of us between about 30-45 must have this story? It was already hard enough for Stoke battling the glitz of Liverpool et al for the support of local school kids, imagine what it would’ve been like without the Lou years... Happy bday Lou Mate, There was no way my old man would allowed me support Liverpool utd or any other popular team. Same for me with my lad. Even though he was lucky enough to start off with a prem team. I know what you mean though, I vaguely remember the ball times. Literally no one at the front of the boothen end. I get reminded I would kick a can around the front of the boothen when ball was in charge, no one around to piss off. But when Lou came, the ground started to buzz. Special times in my life and no doubt many others. It wasnt about what league we were in, it just felt like everyone was happy again to be there. Similar times now, I hope next year can replicate that time. Macari's RED Army Macari's Red Army

Happy b'day Lou and thanks for the memories. I've seen it all from about 1950 and apart from those fabulous years in the 70's, I can't remember a time when the supporters were so happy. It didn't matter a jot which league we were playing in or what the result was, he instilled a togetherness that has never been bettered. Fabulous times, some great players, Wembley, and let's not forget the fun part. Every fan wore a smile on their faces in those days, and seeing Nello dressed as a chicken at Orient and also come on against the Villa is the stuff of legend. But perhaps the funniest bit is on this video.... OS.
