Hide behind you approximations .....I happen to think the game is becoming more predictable than ever before. And Dave we were competing on the same pit h until recently..you can say jesus wept but. Is there a single word there that isnt true? What approximations? The post was about the fact that the Championship is unpredictable every single year, and we're equally as likely to be in the same situation next year, promoted or hell even relegated. Then you waded in about Man City. At the higher levels, of course chance/luck goes down, but saying Man City will win a lot is not being perfectly accurate, it's a general point on a prevailing trend. Even this year, we've had 4 English clubs in European finals A title race going to the final day with both teams in the high 90s on points Two CL semi finals where a team has been 3 goals down and gone on to win. The game is unpredictable and this season has been rampant for it.

I am certainly suggesting if not for sheer incompetence unfolding before our very eyes we should at least be in the same bloody league as them ππππππ

Look. the point I am trying to make is this. Football can be made to be more predictable if you set very high expectations engender ambition, enforce a winning culture, not accepting second best or compromise. You spend money on the right people who manage effectively and ruthlessly in all things from:- who manages the club to, who runs the fucking shop. To me, the clubs stinks of this all pervading 'we were happy to be here -EFL is Ok -lets keep this our fucking hobby' mentality instead of,instilling a bit of real hunger and ruthless ambition in the fucking place. And that goes for some of the fans too , WE ALL fans supporters followers have got to demand better ....much, much, better from this football club.

Last on this. we had two years of prem debacle before we were relegated.(easily culled by people with the managerial balls to do what needed in timely fashion .Meanwhile, we got 'I see no fucking problem' or words to that effect ). Last season was our best chance to get back, spend the money on first choices 'A listers' and 'no brainers'. As it transpired, we bought a whole host of second choices, compromises and 'B listers' and people who just werent up to the fucking job, both managerially and player wise, leaving the same failed administration behind it all spending another fortune in the process too. Now we got a new manager, untried and a risk. I wish him all the best but as a consequence of last seasons debacle, hes already out there compromising, signing free transfers and looking to offload our star players (as well as the ballast). So, does this ring of predictability? Planning for success ? Id say the answer to that is no ...and Im even more fucking mad about it presently than even before.

Alternatively, we had the biggest budget in the league and signed the players the manager wanted to sign for the most part (no manager gets all their first choices, even Man City didn't in the summer). The managerial appointment was a disaster, yes, but the club hardly lacked ambition in terms of expenditure.

Agree, except that NJ is part of the decline....It can all change over summer, but am predicting jones gone with his team impotent and confused by winter. And the longer it takes for us to get our act together, the more strident the siren calls from The Capped One will become, assuming that he would still be available, such that PC and Co. will not be able to resist. The OP was depressing - this takes it to a whole new level. Anyone got the number for the Samaritans?

The pre season hasn't started, we have no idea how are line up looks and some are predicting we'll never bounce back and the manager will last a few months.
I really think some would be miserable if we have a great season

In response to 3puts I have to agree that the Waddington Years were more of a "Golden" Era than our recent 10 year PL stint. For the record my first match was in March 1958 (we beat Brighton 3 nil) and my first season ticket was in 1963 (after promotion). Although not suicidal I am very concerned that the sort of players we are now being linked with are not of sufficient calibre to get us back into our rightful place in the top tier.

Yea, .....or NJ was chosen due to a good knowledge of League 1 players, as the Board gave up on a fast return and planned to operate with a squad costing half of the wages, while recouping 20m or so net profit from sales. Iβve seen mention of NJ being an alternative to tired names etc. Well Iβm actually Not blasting NJ - but would rather we employed a DOF from the coaching hierarchy of Dortmund/ PSG/ Liverpool/ Bayern too - and build an infrastructure for elite performance. And NJ to work within it Spending lots of money =/= fast return. Last season proved that in abundance. Though I agree with your wider point, intelligent recruitment trumps expense driven recruitment every time. Hard to argue that good recruitment doesnβt matter. Have a look at relationship between wages and league position though- itβs very strong. I was in a debate on here the other day and a poster made a good point that wages matter, but actual spend less so - due to Bosnians, loans etc.

Incredible. As a passionate supporter for 61 plus years I find it unbelievable that I am now accused of being a liar on this site. Perhaps I did not experience the semi-final heartbreak of Hillsborough and Goodison. Perhaps I did not witness Dennis Violet's last minute winning goal against Sunderland on Easter Monday 1963 which effectively got us promotion back to Division One after so many years. Perhaps I did not witness Stans return against Huddersfield Town in front of 335,000 in October 1962. Perhaps I never got to watch the great Peter Dobing or any of my other heroes - Eric Skeels, the aforesaid Dennis Violet, Jackie Mudie, Don Ratcliffe, Bill Asprey, Dennis Smith, Mickey Pejic, Alan Dodd, Terry Conroy, Jimmy Greenhoff and Mickey Bernard. Perhaps I imagined it all and I am suffering from severe dimentia. Perhaps I am too old to bother with this site. Give me f***ing strength !

Lets stop kidding ourselves the club has been in a unstoppable downward spiral for the last three and a half years and the inexperienced (at top level) Mr Jones is unlikely to be able to reverse that cycle on a limited budget. We are paying the price for our horrendous player recruitment which brought in the likes of Imbula, Wimmer, Berahino, Wolscheid and Joselu for countless millions and we are now unashamedly shopping for B List Championship journeymen and ageing PL rejects. Such players may help to consolidate our position in the Championship but they wont get us promoted and if they did they would need replacing at prohibitive expense. When I first started supporting the team over 60 years ago we were a mediocre second tier club with modest ambitions. I fear that we are likely to remain at a similar level for the foreseeable future. One small observation what was golden in 2018 unless you like a touch of abject surrender
