Mr Lynch certainly helped us beat Bristol City at Wembley Ball was moving when Bjarni took the free kick, and he hadnt even blown his whistle for it to be taken when Thorney scored For that reason only, he was ok [ for one day] Ball wasn't moving A these years I never realised was Billy Hamilton. McNally was an atrocious ref, he allowed their player to kick the ball away in the last few minutes then sent off Ray Evans. I don't see why we didn't bring the sub on but should have just made Smith leave the field.

Was in no state to continue and hardly ungentlemanly conduct on Smith's part

I have never got over the injustice of that referee. I can see exactly where I was standing, near the front by the segregation fence. That match has haunted me and watching it back for the first time, it was as bad as I remember.

I remember that game as though it was yesterday.
When I tell people we had two players sent off; one while being substituted and the second because we were given a free kick for offside they don't believe me.
I'd forgotten about the penalty decision though.
I never knew this game had even been televised.
And for the record, we had a half decent team with a very good manager. I would put Durban as 3rd best in my lifetime after TP and Waddo.

Hughes was the first manager since Durban to get us a top half finish. Hell of a wait to be fair

I could hear two of our songs of the day coming from the terraces, ''Alan Durban's red and white army'' and ''We all agree, Stoke City are magic''. Loved Alan Durban. never missed a match home or away under his tenure. We should have tried harder to keep Durban, the board allowed his contract to run down, which upset him, especially after the job he had done. He felt the club did not share his ambitions, so off he went. Typical, Stoke, shooting ourselves in the foot.

He did say that but he was always looking to better himself I thought and never distanced himself from jobs. Built a great Shrews side then away and same with us.

His managerial career ended in 1986....apart from his brief caretaker job back here in 98. In hindsight he should have stayed with us

I hope Burnley enjoyed their day in the mud, as just 4 months later they were relegated to the old third division, for the first time in their history.

Been doing some research on the referee from hell, apparently, he got driven to matches in his Rolls Royce. He upset fans of other clubs for his abysmal refereeing. Will let you know during the week what else I can find out.
