Obviously Ryan has been a great servant for our club and has captained us on some of the proudest days in our history, but with him potentially not being an automatic first choice for next season and us a club hopefully looking to make a fresh start, would it be worth appointing a new captain? Ryan would obviously still be a big part of the dressing room and as an ambassador for the club with regards to the community outreach programmes we put on, but I feel it's time we gave the armband to someone else, someone whos a bit more vocal and a bit more of a natural leader. To that end - I would give it to Danny Batth - it's no coincidence that since he's come in, we've looked a lot more solid, organised and assured at the back. Jack would have been a candidate but obviously he's looking like going, as would Joe, but he's another one I would sacrifice to free up wonga to bring in bigger, more physical players who can deal with the demands of the championship. Would also consider young Tommy - he's really grown into the side this season and what better way to get us fans onside than having one of our own leading the side out every week, but he's too young and needs to concentrate on continuing to develop his game without any added distractions, maybe a few years down the line though. For now though, I would say Danny Batth.

Club captain without question, team captain is and has been up for grabs.

Club captain without question, team captain is and has been up for grabs. I think it's something that needs to be addressed in top of other things as I think Ryan's career here has 1 possibly 2 more seasons left at most considering how much he's fallen away compared to where he was before the back injuries. We've been lucky to have the same captain for 9 years, not many clubs have had that luxury. It would make sense to slowly transfer the baton now instead of waiting till he's gone and find ourselves without someone who's already there to step up.

I'm not so sure Danny Batth is really as good as many on here believe. There, I've said it!

Remember that time when Ryan wasn't on the pitch and we had to rely on a 17 year old lad to show a bit of leadership?

Ryan has been a great servant to the club but time to move on, his ability has never been good as regards passing and for me, relies far too much on the hoof and with very little pace will get caught out far more next season.

Relies on the hoof? Or has played under a majority of managers that want him to hoof it.....

It tells you something that the only vaguely plausible alternative for the Captain's job is Danny Batth who has played exactly 17 games for the football club.

Never rated Ryan as captain, should deffo go to Batth!!! I take it you’ve played alongside him in defence, been a member of the squad, been there in the dressing room, he’s represented you with the club. If not you haven’t got a clue, and I suggest you let his 5th manager make the decision.

Our search for a new CB should suggest that Ryan will be a 1st reserve next season, which should answer the OPs question?

Successful clubs have more than one 'captain' on the pitch.

We've been lacking leadership for a few seasons now, especially on the training ground where there's been a serious lack of professionalism by a fair few. As captain I'd expect this to be brought to the attention of management and board members before it's effects started to take hold but it never was.
Changing captaincy may not change things enormously but should be considered as part of this mega turnaround that is being peddled by the club

Shawcross is decent and no doubt can still do a job but as captain I think it needs to go to someone else. Unfortunately shawcross captained us the last couple of yrs in the PL and last yr, and we have a losing mentality, so if we are all aiming to change the mentality of the club and team we need a fresh look on stuff. For me this means a new captain who will have a different mentality. Not sure who, nor overly concerned who it is as long as the decision is fresh and new and the guy wants to take the team forward with the best attitude. Actually if Arter signs give it to him - passionate, aggressive, protective, decent.

For your information, it's "MY" opinion about him, you got yours, I've got mine, I'll respect yours, you respect mine!!! All I said was that I didn't rate him as a captain, and I don't, I think Batth would make a far better captain!!!

Shawcross and Bart are good team leaders, you'd have to spend a lot more money to find better.

When a goal gets conceded Ryan’s head goes straight down to the floor you need someone to rally. I think Ryan would have been a even better player if he hadn’t of had the pressure of captaincy
