The one thing I will say. These do feel like the kind of signings we should have been making last summer. The best of the champ on frees on sensible wages. Not spunking money on old premier failures on massive long contracts. Rowett really was clueless If having been relegated from the Premier with all the millions burning a hole in our arse pocket and we made these sort of signings this forum would of self combusted. . to some extent they should have been last year's signings. Its the collective, though, that I await to see, as we still need pace and quality to add to honesty and industry. ... And, loans! Loans of attacking talents from PL clubs are a no brainer. In fact, the evidence rather suggests that they are a necessity:- This year's star turns - Harry Wilson, Mount, Abraham, Gayle, and Harvey Barnes for half a season and Jack Harrison. (Also Mings). Admittedly less of a role at Sheff U & Norwich in attack, but for Sheff U, loans still included Henderson in goal and 10 assists from Norwood. 2016-17 - Aaron Mooy (& Danny Ward) (Hudd), Atsu (NUFC), Glenn Murray (BHA). 2017-18 - Mitrovic (& Kalas) (Fulham), Boly, Bonatini, Jota (Wolves) and several loan players made useful contributions to Cardiff too. Why oh why oh why does NJ thumb his nose at loans, just as GR did. Surely, its specious nonsense to say that these players disrupt a squad, when its clear that loans are the key ingredient that made a difference for over half of promoted clubs! (This guy's my choice... So - no, we don't need to spend 50m, but a mix of our freebies, 2-3 prudent and carefully-selected purchases and 2 good loans, including 1 for a talented and productive attacker, will be key. I think part of the problem is we go for the wrong sort of loans too. Rather than young hungry players we go for veterans past there best on big wages. The last young loan I remember is Ryan.

I think your opinion is still being heavily influenced by what ended up happening. Everyone was buzzing about Afobe, bringing up his stats, talking about how great a deal we had got considering he had completed a permanent move not long before moving to Stoke. Getting Williams on loan didn't seem a bad idea at the time, once he had played a few games though we quickly realised he wasn't the standard he used to be. Martina I will give you, that was baffling from day one. But then again, we all expected Bauer to be the #1 after his good spell at the tail end of the previous season, so Martina was competition for all defensive positions. Clucas well, he had pedigree. The problem was we signed an injured player and we didn't get to see him until a third of the season had passed. I will add one that I am sure most will agree with, McClean. Dubious from the beginning and he didn't fail to deliver on our expectations. Pretty useless signing and offers next to nothing. As has been indicated already on this thread, a super rich outfit, who were favourites for the title and to bounce straight back up, were EXPECTED to spend money. If we had taken a load of free transfers on, I imagine the support would have turned nastier towards Rowett a hell of a lot sooner than it actually did. He shouldn’t have signed Afobe if he only planned on playing one striker though. It makes no sense to have such a lob on for a player who doesn’t - and never has - fit that role well. Were Clucas and Woods both needed, especially since we already had Etebo, who he turned his nose up at? Absolutely agree, but when we signed Afobe I dont think we really knew enough about how Rowett intended to play. I think Woods was needed though, I remember at the time thinking we had too many centre midfielders alike and Woods was supposed to be something a little different (which he was for half a dozen games but then looked the same as the rest of them)

H Christ on a bike I was simply questioning the poster who said they were the BEST in the championship which clearly they are not otherwise they might have featured in the PFA championship team of the year. I am not saying we shouldn't sign them or they don't have the potential to do OK for us!

He's useless!

Not spunking money on old premier failures on massive long contracts. Rowett really was clueless Completely agree in hindsight. However lets face it. If we were signing players like these last summer the fans would have been in uproar about the lack of money being spent and how we were 'doing things on the cheap' etc. What we needed was a bit of balance. Two or three properly researched marquee signings who clearly fitted into the system we wanted to play and addressed our biggest weaknesses. And a clutch of players similar to who we seem to be targeting this summer who are cheaper, lower risk and again are properly researched and match up with the weaknesses in our squad. Rather than wasting money on similar players to what we already have and buying expensive players who's strengths don't match up with the system we want to play and the players we already have.

Intelligent recruiting, and exploitation of your wage capacity will always trump the ability to throw a load of cash around. We came down with the intention to spend which instantly drives prices up and signed players for the sake of signing rather than fitting them in a system. Whether that’s Rowett’s fault or the transfer team I don’t know, but the fact is transfers were dominated by names and not be tactics.

He was quite established though. I’m talking more the Wilson types. Lads who haven’t broken into the first team yet.

One of the worst things I know is when I find myself defending GR, who I opposed from day 1. But he tried to sign those kinds of players, but they did not see us as the platform for their further career or they did not have faith in the manager or our business model. So in the end he allowed the transfer team to go wasting money on similar players to what we already have and buying expensive players who's strengths don't match up with the system we want to play and the players we already have.

We are certainly looking at spending very little by the evidence of the players we are supposedly bringing in this time, Mr Coates says Nath is ok with the squad he has already, interesting times ahead ? or another season of boring shit football.

The thing that worries me the most is when Jones says he is ok with the squad he's got; frankly he tends to express more than just mere okayity, last quote I remember is that he couldn't imagine a future without the 11 players he put out vs Charlton. But just to confuse the enemy I still support the manager...
