The one thing I will say. These do feel like the kind of signings we should have been making last summer. The best of the champ on frees on sensible wages.
Not spunking money on old premier failures on massive long contracts. Rowett really was clueless

Rowett did what most managers in his bracket would do in the same situation, and that was to go out and banjo a load of money on the type of players he'd always wanted, but could never really afford to have. The end result is what we've got now. A load of players that don't fit together, placed on top of an existing squad that was so broken in so many different ways.
The frustrating part of it is why the existing owners just didn't see right through it, given the level of experience they have in the boardroom.

It was his first and probably last chance at going into a season as favourites with a considerable warchest at his disposal.

One is actually a div one player the other two come from teams who finished 18th and 21st!! Hardly the best.

Not spunking money on old premier failures on massive long contracts. Rowett really was clueless If Rowett had gone down the sensible route he would have been crucified on here - the expectation was to spend big, build on the foundation of a "solid" Premiership squad and get an instant return to the Premiership. Some of his signings may not have been great but the big problem for Rowett - and any other manager coming in - was that the "Premiership" foundations were rotten. The owners realised this at Xmas and ditched Rowett and any pretence of an instant return to the Premiership. I agree Jones is doing absolutely the right thing - but what he's doing isn't necessarily a recipe for instant success, More people are coming round to the idea that this might be a long haul - but not many were when Rowett arrived. Rowett made some mistakes - but blaming him for where we are now is really missing the point. The problems run much deeper than that.

He often appears disinterested to me and is too one footed.

They are well known for their laissez-faire approach to the footballing side of things, when things are going swimmingly it tends to serve the club well, unfortunatrly when the wheels start to come off however...

One is actually a div one player the other two come from teams who finished 18th and 21st!! Hardly the best. Assume your referring to Adam Davies as the ‘division one player’? Pretty sure Barnsley have just been promoted so he’s a Championship player and comes up with the golden glove award from that league. In regards to Gregory I haven’t seen one bad word about him from all the Millwall lot on Twitter, they seem devastated. Powell is, when fit, one of the better players in this league. Problem is he is injured frequently and never getting a run of games. Regardless, these 3 are certainly no more of a gamble as Clucas, McClean, Williams, Martina etc... and the ones we were confident about (Afobe and Ince) were dogshite as well. So when you say ‘hardley the best’ we tried buying the best last summer, how did that work out? Let’s buy the right players perhaps?

I give you Ince seneed expensive but shoukd do a job Theoretically Ince and Afobe looked to be the signings that offered us the quality up top to be able to at least challenge towards the top 6. Signing the likes of Clucas, Jimmy (despite his work ethic), Williams and Cuco were were poor signings of mediocre players on premier League wages.

. to some extent they should have been last year's signings. Its the collective, though, that I await to see, as we still need pace and quality to add to honesty and industry.
... And, loans!
Loans of attacking talents from PL clubs are a no brainer. In fact, the evidence rather suggests that they are a necessity:-
This year's star turns - Harry Wilson, Mount, Abraham, Gayle, and Harvey Barnes for half a season and Jack Harrison. (Also Mings). Admittedly less of a role at Sheff U & Norwich in attack, but for Sheff U, loans still included Henderson in goal and 10 assists from Norwood. 2016-17 - Aaron Mooy (& Danny Ward) (Hudd), Atsu (NUFC), Glenn Murray (BHA). 2017-18 - Mitrovic (& Kalas) (Fulham), Boly, Bonatini, Jota (Wolves) and several loan players made useful contributions to Cardiff too.
Why oh why oh why does NJ thumb his nose at loans, just as GR did. Surely, its specious nonsense to say that these players disrupt a squad, when its clear that loans are the key ingredient that made a difference for over half of promoted clubs!
(This guy's my choice...
So - no, we don't need to spend 50m, but a mix of our freebies, 2-3 prudent and carefully-selected purchases and 2 good loans, including 1 for a talented and productive attacker, will be key.

I give you Ince seneed expensive but shoukd do a job I think your opinion is still being heavily influenced by what ended up happening. Everyone was buzzing about Afobe, bringing up his stats, talking about how great a deal we had got considering he had completed a permanent move not long before moving to Stoke. Getting Williams on loan didn't seem a bad idea at the time, once he had played a few games though we quickly realised he wasn't the standard he used to be. Martina I will give you, that was baffling from day one. But then again, we all expected Bauer to be the #1 after his good spell at the tail end of the previous season, so Martina was competition for all defensive positions. Clucas well, he had pedigree. The problem was we signed an injured player and we didn't get to see him until a third of the season had passed. I will add one that I am sure most will agree with, McClean. Dubious from the beginning and he didn't fail to deliver on our expectations. Pretty useless signing and offers next to nothing. As has been indicated already on this thread, a super rich outfit, who were favourites for the title and to bounce straight back up, were EXPECTED to spend money. If we had taken a load of free transfers on, I imagine the support would have turned nastier towards Rowett a hell of a lot sooner than it actually did.

Jones could still throw silly money on silly players if his current method, which I agree is good, doesn't provide him with everything that he wants.

Because their management theory is to let the footballing section take care of the footballing management, and let the business end take care of finances, and let the amateurs in the boardroom refrain from interfering. That's not a bad theory when it works...

I'm not known to be one of Jones' biggest fans, but I'm thrilled with the Powell signing - even though it's a risk, both potentially in terms of wages and fitness. But it's a risk worth taking.

He shouldn’t have signed Afobe if he only planned on playing one striker though. It makes no sense to have such a lob on for a player who doesn’t - and never has - fit that role well. Were Clucas and Woods both needed, especially since we already had Etebo, who he turned his nose up at?
