He was a great driver in his era who had some superb races against James Hunt. These two and also Alain Prost and Rene Arnoux really got me interested in F1 which I've followed ever since. Lauda suffered horrific burns following his accident but was determined to continue in the sport. He was known to be something of a "difficult character" to deal with apparently.
R.I.P.

Not only a 3 times F1 world champion , but Luda air founder and pilot RIP Niki, an inspiration to many that had adversity try to stop them doing what they were good at.

Sad news He's only remembered for his disfigurements. Disagree Jo. Remembered for being one of the greatest tactically astute drivers of all time, and a heart of a lion. RIP Nicki Lauda

Just reading his obituary on BBC. What a man, returned to F1 only 40 days after that horrific accident and took the lead in the championship ahead of Hunt. In the last race of the season on Japan Lauda refused to race because of the horrendous torrential rain despite Ferrari pleas. Hunt came 3rd which was enough to pip Lauda to the championship by half a point. He was instrumental in persuading Lewis Hamilton to join Mercedes in 2012. A truly great man who will be sorely missed. RIP big man you certainly left a legacy.

Geniuses often are difficult. Absolute perfectionist, and could detect the tiniest of defects in his car just from the feel and sound on the track, and considering diagnostics in them days were primitive this gave him the edge, not only against the field, but against his own team mate, as he was reluctant to share his opinions and strategies.

I used to know the guy who was Lauda's tyre technician in the late 70's. He said Lauda wasn't "very technical" but he was pedantic about tyre pressures and could detect even a 1 psi difference in a tyre pressure.

Truly captivating driver, the quiet artist in contrast to Hunt’s brash style.
Superb drivers, sad to see them both gone.

RIP If you’ve not seen it watch this, it does Hollywood the story a bit but a great racing movie and well made. A rare example of a sports story done well. Yes there are plenty of liberties taken but I found the guy that played Lauda brought the human side of the man to life. I loved to see him with talking and joking with Lewis Hamilton, it was clear that there was huge mutual respect between them.

Best bits where he’s driving his future wife in that car with the two blokes in the back going nuts because it’s Niki lauda driving their car

It's interesting about the bravery thing, if it were not for his accident we would never have known what he was truly made of. The same applies to most people, fortunately relatively few people in in the developed world ever have to go through such an experience and as such we rarely get to see what people are truly made of.
