If I understand correctly the EU elections are proportional representation.
With the rise of the Brexit Party and re-emergence of Le Pen in France and assuming there are similar popular anti EU movements in other countries what will happen if there are hundreds of anti EU MEP's - could this destroy the EU from within?

The growth of anti-EU parties in the European Parliament elections in May could “paralyse” the bloc in a range of policy areas. according to a stark warning in an EU report seen by The Independent newspaper.
"Nationalist, eurosceptic, and far-right parties could bring about a “qualitative change” in the union after winning a third of seats.
Winning more than 33 percent of seats would enable them to form a minority and would give the populists significant influence in the union and the ability to block some legislation.
The parties would be able to appoint the chairs of a third of European Parliament (EP) committees and block the body from triggering so-called “Article 7” procedures against rogue member states that flout the rule of law – as it did with Viktor Orban’s Hungary last year.
Even more significantly, unless all the other political groups consistently vote together, populists might also be able to block the election of the next European Commission president to replace Jean Claude Drunker."

An anti-EU EU Parliament is unlikely to have the powers to "Destroy the EU from within". The Independent probably gets it spot on when it says it can "paralyse" the EU - effectively grinding it to a halt. I think at the moment anti-EU parties are not forecast to get enough votes to form a majority, but will probably take enough to ensure that the left/right coalition that has controlled the EU Parliament for a while no longer has enough for a majority. Although polls are never 100% accurate, it certainly seems that there will be a new dynamic in the EU Parliament after this next election.

The vote is Thursday with results announced Sunday there's plenty of time for minor adjustment if need be.
Remember your blue or black ballpoint pen to mark the ballot paper folks. Perfectly legal to do so.

I think the Lib Debs will do better than predicted. Tomorrow will be shocking for Labour and even worse for the Tories.

For those who don't see Brexit as the main issue (!)....how do we , the electorate, oppose this through the ballot box? It would be nice to hear from those who believe that the EU is fundamentally a democratic institution. ) I'll give you a clue.....you can't oppose it....it's not in your remit to influence decisions).....and on any case most of the British electorate are not interested.

In the EU elections vote for a party that are anti-EU. Then if enough people vote for anti-EU parties, these sorts of projects will get voted down in the EU Parliament. It's a bit late for this specific project, as it's funding has been approved by the democratically-elected EU Parliament recently I believe. But if you wish to resist ever closer union and more integration, that's how you go about. Indeed, the EU will find it a lot harder to pass this sort of legislation after the next elections this week.

You csni resist ever closer union if you remain in the EU, that's the purpose of it...you need to read the treaties, abandon your agenda and try to make a sensible argument ... you might be fooling yourselves but you don't fool others.

Let me know which bit I've misunderstood.

No matter if the Brexit Party does win "big" the Remainers still won't accept it as a democratic indication that people do really still want to leave the EU. They still won't accept that the "winner has won" !
I saw an article on The Independent's website yesterday where they're already spinning it "....if these figures are correct it's a clear indication that the majority still want to remain even though the vote is split amongst several parties". They were still pushing for a "confirmatory referendum".
According to the figures in this latest poll, if they are indeed accurate, it's predicted that the Brexit Party would get 30-32 MEPs which is a pretty resounding confirmation of the situation IMO.
I think on the day the Brexit Party share of the vote will be slightly higher than reported as some people are reluctant to openly declare their support. Yesterday's car crash debate by Vince Cable against Nigel Farage certainly won't have helped attract any waverers to the Liberal "Democrats" (bit of an ironic name isn't it) at all.
Vote Brexit Party today - don't forget to take your black or blue biro to mark your ballot paper !
As far as the Peterborough by election goes, and also the next general election, I think the atmosphere will be vile with more and more smear attempts against Farage, and with many parties just concentrating on attacking the Brexit Party rather than promoting their own manifestos. As Farage recently quoted "you only get flak when you're getting close to the target".

Just leaving for work via the polling station to vote the Brexit party!
To long now our voices have been ignored. If nothing else this is our chance to remind the government we want Brexit, a good Brexit.
Remind your friends, family and work colleagues to also vote the Brexit party!

The Tories face annihilation.
So very funny.
Labour are hardly any better.
It's going to be fun watching the politicians spin these results.

Let me know which bit I've misunderstood. The EU Is that it? Really? For years you've been banging on about it being impossible to change the course of the EU. Then you give an example, and ask how it would be possible to stop a project (in this case the EU Defence). When I give you a fairly reasonable explanation of how this could get voted down, you tell me I don't understand without offering any indication of where I am wrong. It's like you think the EU is anti-democratic just because you say it is.

If this is a confirmatory vote then one side (No Deal - UKIP and Brexit Party, Brexit With Deal - Labour and Conservative, No Brexit - Lib Dems, Greens, SNP, Plaid) need to get over 50%. It looks unlikely at the moment - but could be possible if Brexit Party do far better than the polling suggests.

I'm quite liking Sir Nige's new avatar... what are your plans for the economy once we leave the EU, Nigel. What do you think about privatisation in the Health Service? What do you think about hedge funds and city bonuses? How might you fill the gaps in key roles if immigration is curbed? Will you renew Trident? What are your plans for mental Health? What do you feel about our underperforming and exploitative privatised utilities? What's your stance on the gig economy and zero hours contracts? What will you do with Universal credit? What's that Nigel, 'Democracy, Democracy, Demoracy' Oh that explains it all. Thanks Nigel. Right Wing tosspot.
