Turkey - shit hole Lindos in Rhodes - heaven Thailand - paradise, but different islands can change dramatically over the course of a couple of years. ie koh samet used to be paradise, now it’s like blackpool. Research required beforehand. I was also going to say Lindos as the surprise. Beautiful place, especially at night when walking through the tiny streets in the town. So relaxed and chilled.

As a slight amendment to the rules I went to Riga in Latvia twice: First time with the missus in 2006 - it was lovely, really unspoilt and not very touristy. We spent three days wandering around the old and new towns, seeing some of the local highlights, eating and drinking our way round. The flights were about £35 each return and we spent no more than £200 total (for both of us) including hotel for the long weekend. Second time one of my pals stag do's, a different trip admittedly but still drinking around the old and new towns, eating out and hotel etc. We had a hilarious morning karting where we were breathalysed before we were allowed to kit up, so we sent the most hungover of the group up front to see what would happen and he passed(!) so most of us (a couple of chickens were too hungover) spent the morning drunk driving our karts around a circuit with the winner getting props mostly for still being alive (stupidly brave at corners) more than anything. It was still a good long weekend and it coincided with our promotion game at the end of the 2007-2008 season. We had a great time however there is a BIG BUT...I'd told everyone that three days had cost £200quid including flights just 18 months earlier. Yep it was tourist gentrification in action over that short a time frame - beer prices had gone up 250%, food prices 150%, obviously I didn't visit a "gentlemen's club" the first visit but it was £40 a dance on the second visit - two guys on the trip (who admittedly are loaded anyway) spent £1.5k each on the weekend most of the rest of the group easily got through £650 each once the hotel, flights and entertainments was added up. I was completely skint at the time (it was when the recession really bit and my long term clients had just pulled six months of contracts off the table) and was hoping for a cheap weekend (I was the most frugal that weekend and just drank beer at the club until I was asked to leave!). I'll never forget the breakfast on the Saturday morning when out of ten hungover men, absolutely no one would believe my story about 40pence beers and lunches costing £5 for two of us when they'd spent the £200 budget I'd recommended already and were having to withdraw cash from the bank next door after breakfast.

Letdown - Barbados, Varedaro (Cuba) Surprise - Oman, The rest of Cuba I loved Barbados although I agree its got its over commercialised and touristy bits, especially Bridgetown which could have been anywhere really. We stayed in St Lawrence Gap in the south which was good fun with being able to walk into "The Gap" for drinks and food each night. Oistins for the Friday Fish Market/Fry night was good fun. Varedaro though I completely agree with - its a bland hotel resort. Pinar Del Rio, Havana and Trinidad were great though. My cousins been to the south island and its more rural down there - I didn't have the chance to stay at a casa particular though, perhaps one for the to do list.

I nearly said Menorca myself beautiful island. Personally think Kuala Lumpur is a bit backwards and not a place would want to stay voluntarily, I agree. Phom Penh is a great city to visit these days, used to be the real Wild West but never liked Malaysia much at all.

let down - Miami Beach, what a dog hole full of drug dealers and twisters, stupid prices and just in general one of the most unsafe places i have ever been surprised - Benirdorm, expected much worse, yes the boozy brit thing is happening but its clean and warm and in general pleasant This, benidorm old town we found to be really nice, some lovely restaurants too. The new town is what it is, stay away from the strip and its fine.

I nearly said Menorca myself beautiful island. We went there on HMS Brave on the way back from the Gulf, our captain, 'Barking Bob' so called because he was pretty nuts, had a mate who had a villa there so that's where two hundred and fifty odd of us had to go At the end of the first night out in Mahon a few of us were sat at a harbourside bar discussing how utterly dead the place was and how few single females we'd seen. So we flew to Majorca the next day, even tho we were supposedly barred from leaving the island, had a ball I imagine it's great if you're with the missus and/or kids tho

I can only remember a bit of the town and the airport mate, I don't think I went ashore after we got back from Majorca, I'd probably enjoy the place nowadays if I went. Haven't been to Rhyl since I was a kid and that was only once or twice, I'm sure I could enjoy a day or two there

Not surprised but Riviera Maya in Mexico is amazing, Quinta Roo. Some amazing local towns (only drove through on way to Playa Del Carmen) I'm sure they were extremely dangerous but quirky, and shabby, and then idyllic beaches and resorts.
New York is a completely different kind of amazing
Disappointed - Paris. Absolute shithole away from the main tourist areas

Letdown - Cyprus - thought it was awful and dont get the hype at all Surprise - Seville - city break but what a fabulous place - my new favourite place on the planet Sevilla is excellent, did you go into the palace gardens We went for 7 days and it was 7 days of pure joy and culture. Hired a car and hardly used it apart from a trip to Cadiz (weirdly appealing place) and Alhambra (awful and tacky). Went to a few of the gardens and palaces in Sevilla but loads more to do - next time later this year we'll just hire pedal bikes to get around. The churches are wonderful (the only let down being the main central cathedral which although enormous is pretty bland inside). The area around the main cathedral is wonderful though. Perfect combination of warm friendly people, fantastic food and drink and breathtaking architecture and gardens.
