I used to drink in a pub called the Black Lion, which used to be on road from Shelton into Hanley (I think it was on Broad Street) but appears to have been redeveloped long ago I was knocked down in 2008. It was my regular haunt in the build up to emigration. I have a brick from there here!! You on Facebook? www.facebook.com/groups/334684407546/

I'm crap at that sort of stuff and don't know when I'll next be up Hanley duck, never mind. Think it's between the MIND place and an exhaust place, I'll get a better description next time I'm there There's an older building between the two where Autocab private hire is based. 10 years ago Ratcliffe builders also occupied it but I think they're long gone now. There was The Antelope which later became 'Down Under' on the corner of the crossroads (Marsh Street / Trinity Street) but other than that I'm struggling. The below links might help jog some memories. www.closedpubs.co.uk/staffordshire/stokeontrent_st1.htmlwww.thepotteries.org/inns/hanley/index.htmBeen past today and it must be the builders, advertisement on the side, it is the older building, looks like it may well have been a pub at some point in its life. Thanks

I'm sure they still exist as an entity but I dunner know where they congregate now. I'll put the feelers out and I'm sure there'll be an answer. In the meantime I'll leave it open, I'm sure someone on here'll know.

I was asking one of the girls for restaurant recommendations before my birthday and she mentioned two in Leek. The first was The Street Grill in Russell Street and then she suggested the Peak Weavers hotel for fine dining. I asked because she occasionally uses the Lazy Trout and the Stafford Arms so I thought there might be others she knew. The kids asked to go back to the Lazy Trout We went to the Napoli , proper wood fired pizza oven as well Had one of them in Paris the other night. Real oak!🍕

I never see any of this when I'm in Hanley. Do you go looking for it or are there less salubrious parts that I don't venture into? No, I try to avoid it, but it's rife. We need a Judge Dredd to sort it out. Judge Dredd? He's too late, Necropolis beat him to it (one for the JD fans there).

Evidently it hasn't, because I was going at 18 when it was absolutely packed out in every bar up Trinity Street.... and that was only 10 years ago.

The Sugarmill and The Underground are two of my all-time favourite clubs. I've not been out in Hanley for ages because of age, but in my late teens / early 20s I could have happily spent every day of the week in either of those places. The latter went a bit crap when they built the big Tesco next to it, but still.
Been to most of the bars, pubs and clubs that have been open in Hanley over the last 15 years or so. It's a shame to see Walkabout shut. There seem to be fewer and fewer "end the night" places now it's closed, the death of Jumpin' Jaks, Creation etc. It's a bit crap if you don't like indie music, so your choice is limited to chavvy Liquid (Fiction?) and a gay bar!

Once you get to a certain age people's tastes change- I like the real ale/micro pub scene and Hanley's way behind Newcastle in terms of the craft beer revolution. There's a couple of places down Picadilly, plus Wetherspoons and the new Woodman whereas Newcastle has seven within spitting distance of each other- and that's just in one part of the town. And that's not counting the numerous decent pubs just outside Newcastle itself- there's probably more decent boozers in Hartshill than Hanley. There's not even a decent 'ale route' on the outskirts of Hanley if you wanted to work your way in. I know Hanley has The Market Tavern, Albion, Tontine and Auctioneer but they don't cut the mustard for me.
Another reason 'castle trumps Hanley? Restaurants

Ontrade bars have been declining since the 90s.
However, they were especially hit since the smoking ban.
People are going out less, but spending more. So it’s been more important to offer a good food offering, whilst embracing the craft market, which is growing 30 percent year on year.
Unfortunately, the provincial cities and towns have been hit the hardest.
They just can’t get away with 2 Smirnoff ice for 1 anymore.

I’ve neither been to the Underground or the Sugarmill, but I understand the latter was the Stagedoor & I been there. The Place used to be good. 5 dance floors! We used to listen to different stuff...

The Sugarmill was formerly The Stage (adopting its current name in 1998).
The Stage Door is the pub next door and is still very much open.

Havn't been in the Stage Door for ages, never got on with the ale, but there used to be a brilliant black & white gallery of stars who'd appeared at the Theatre opposite. Can imagine that place post war buzzing with show folk. I've heard The Stage Club referred to as The Mechanic's more than once, wonder if it was a garage/repair shop once? The eoof terrace on the S/Mill is a brilliant addition.

The Stage Door (pub) or at least the pub that stood on its site prior to the current building's 1970s construction did used to be called The Mechanic apparently.
The Sugarmill building next door was actually constructed as a Scout hut and up until recently, was still owned by the Scouts and leased to the Sugarmill proprietors.

Everyday a school day, there were no stage girls and magicians in there in the interlude then. The photos just an affectation. Now you've mentioned it the scout hut rings a bell. Black's had a captive audience then?
