The point I'm making is it's another sign of a general decline. As I said, I never used the place personally. The general decline is behind it as its now finding its feet again in regards regeneration and the pub scene Seriously it’s now a superb night down Piccadilly with more than enough bars and restaurants to cater for the new breed of Hanley nightlife pursuers and somewhere I’d take my wife too If you don’t use it how do you know?....give it a bash you’ll be surprised and this is from someone who used to think like you Sorry mate, I was referring to Walkabout when I said I never use the place. I like the vibe down Picadilly- Mart's, Bottle Craft- and then there's The Woodman and Coachmaker's, plus Wetherspoons for curry night, but I don't think there's enough in Hanley for a late, 'weekend' night out. There's a lot more going on in 'castle at the min. My mate's a DJ and he seems to think that a lot of people are heading to Leek these days.

I don't mind Hanley for a couple in the day or after work but there's a long way to go IMHO. The street drinkers, beggars and druggies don't help.

It's a shame how quickly Hanley has declined. Going back probably not even 5 or 6 years, there was plenty of places to go and have a good night - Walkabout being one of them. It was always cheesy and pretty classless but the place would often be absolutely rammed. Being a single lad back then was heaven. Every time I've been in the last few years (bar when the World Cup was on), it's been full of kids and weapons. There were probably kids and weapons back then but being younger, you don't really notice or care (or you are the weapon).
Shame. Hopefully it gets some love in the near future.

One pub I have never been in. Still haven't tried the new Woodman, either. I am slipping. The woodman is now a very good pub mate Cheers. I will give it a go.

Oh.. A bit disorientated now and can't think of the bldgs along there. There was the former Granville Hostel, that was once The Three Crowns... but that's more Century Street. There was also the Farrow & Firkin, but that was Foundry St I think. Tak a picture. I'm crap at that sort of stuff and don't know when I'll next be up Hanley duck, never mind. Think it's between the MIND place and an exhaust place, I'll get a better description next time I'm there There's an older building between the two where Autocab private hire is based. 10 years ago Ratcliffe builders also occupied it but I think they're long gone now. There was The Antelope which later became 'Down Under' on the corner of the crossroads (Marsh Street / Trinity Street) but other than that I'm struggling. The below links might help jog some memories. www.closedpubs.co.uk/staffordshire/stokeontrent_st1.htmlwww.thepotteries.org/inns/hanley/index.htm

There's a building along Marsh St towards Burslem that looks like it might have been a pub, I can't remember it tho, anyone any ideas? Near the Mind place I think. Or wasn't it a pub at all? I usually frequented the Flickers end of town, can't ever remember going there. The Black Horse? Wasn't this the pub on the left hand side of Marsh Street as you headed out of Hanley towards Cobridge. Not far from the 141 Club.

Leek is buzzing these days , I go there every now and then had some great Italian food there recently I was asking one of the girls for restaurant recommendations before my birthday and she mentioned two in Leek. The first was The Street Grill in Russell Street and then she suggested the Peak Weavers hotel for fine dining. I asked because she occasionally uses the Lazy Trout and the Stafford Arms so I thought there might be others she knew. The kids asked to go back to the Lazy Trout

I used to regularly frequent Walkabout on Monday nights when I was 18. Standard trick was to head down before midnight, get in for the free stamp, have a shot of something, then head up to Varsity which was £1 entry and £1 drinks. Walkabout was genuinely one of the busiest places around that time and I had many good nights in there. That said, I went about 4 years ago on a Monday with a mate and the atmosphere had totally gone. It was a bit of a vacuum really. Walkabout was empty for the most part (and we spent a good hour in there), as was the rest of Hanley in fact. Actually, I feel that Hanley has really died as a night out in general over the past few years. Maybe the younger generation are a bit more ' switched on' and with all the bad press regarding the alcohol industry, are turning to other sources of entertainment on a Saturday instead of pouring what is essentially poison down their neck? I still go out regularly enough to know that Hanley is the go-to place when you want to stay out, because obviously Pink and Bar365 stay open extra late, but it doesn't appear to be the popular choice to head towards. Newcastle seems to be preference and you even hear of people heading to Stafford now. Having been to all three fairly recently, none of them have the same buzz as a few years ago though..... Nowhere is quite as busy. Manchester on the other hand remains an incredible night out, so I wonder if people from Stoke are now going out less but when they do, heading towards bigger cities? Perhaps I'm just getting old Well, I know I am.

I used to drink in a pub called the Black Lion, which used to be on road from Shelton into Hanley (I think it was on Broad Street) but appears to have been redeveloped long ago I was knocked down in 2008. It was my regular haunt in the build up to emigration. I have a brick from there here!!

Some huge woman shouting her tits off at some community bobbies(both small women). The real thing (not the pop group) were leading from a safe distance... People openly drinking alcohol in doorways and not being challenged by the bill. Perhaps it improves at night?

Last time I went there was late last year, Friday night and we went to a gig at Sugarmill and stayed in the Prem Inn opposite Sainsbury’s. Went for drinks and meal in the Excahnge pre gig which was nice, then did the gig, came out about 1030 and was like a ghost town, struggled to find an Indian restaurant , ended up at one by bus station which was v quiet . Was a totally different vibe to last time I’d been out there 6-7 years before that. Mrs was saying “ thought you said this was a good night out “ lol I was like, seriously it used to be.
