Our midfield was woeful today. We really miss Etebo at the moment.

We were jammy tonight and entirely toothless going forward but in the context of the season I don’t think we can turn our noses up at a solid defensive display and point away at a team chasing promotion can we? That would’ve been a good result at the start of the season when plenty of us thought we’d be up there, let alone after a season of lily livered shite.

What's happened is two games back to back, one where we had ten men and the follow up where we had three midfielders left, that not only are similar in style but all are similar paced. Slow.
People often overlook the value of a midfield and a balanced midfield and what it can bring.
The argument is to play Bojan to help bridge the gap between the lines, and it's a fair argument.
It isn't that simple in reality and playing Bojan ahead of two of Allen, Adam or Woods is suicide.
We're desperate for a bona fide ball winner and a midfielder with genuine pace. The ball winner will give the entire team the confidence to step up, the midfielders the confidence to play different balls, the runners the confidence to empty midfield and join the forwards etc.
It will give us a proper platform to play a proper number ten.
It's all linked.
The massive bonus is we're starting to take clean sheets with ease (He says with one eye on Saturday...)
I can understand the criticism after how Rowett was criticised but it feels much different to me. I can see a method in the madness that I never could with him.
Jones' first two signings have not only been solid but have added attributes that were sadly missing. Missing from the vast summer spend.
It will come absolutely but there may be more games like this before we get there.

It doesn’t help that we haven’t signed a decent front man since James Beattie.

Afobe, Diouf have both got people who think they are decent, but don’t get given the right service. The truth is they are both very limited and technically awful players- our chances of scoring with either of them are slim- then we’ve got the massively overrated Tom Ince to add to our goal scoring capability.

Jones sought an audience with March and after 20 minutes he agreed that goals are an unimportant and vastly overrated commodity?

We are a few players light and remain unsure about this system as one to win enough games with.
Back line is good enough for this division; its more about discipline, organisation, strength than talent per se.
Vokes could be good, Afobe might still be useful, but we lack creativity in midfield and also enough goal threat from there.
A better CDM would give more licence for others to move up. We look set to lose Fletcher, Allen and possibly Adam this summer, so it could be a blessing in disguise by allowing us to bring in the more-agile/faster players to fit, but we'd need to get them earlier than later in summer to gel, with so many new faces. Otherwise Jones could be gonner if we start very slowly again.
A faster LB - preferably crossing ability - is also a key one for this system. James would be the obvious name here, but if Luton come up, then perhaps Douglas from Leeds.
