Because our only player to vaguely resemble a left winger was not fully fit ? Now I don't know what Jones was thinking that he can only play Bojan when McClean is somewhat unavailable... Clucas is far more suited to playing that position than Bojan is. I'm yet to see that he is suited to any position over a reasonable period of time - which is not Clucas' fault entirely. His managers apparently have an ambition of turning into a modern day Skeels, never allowing him to settle into position. Skeels could do that and maintain a fair standard every week, Clucas not yet.

Were the wide men supposed to tuck in more than they did? Is that why Bojan was hooked, and would Ince have followed him soon after had he not "started to listen" ? Bojan was taken off because he got injured towards the end of the first half. He may have been treated during the break - obviously I don't know if he was. Then he was tested in the second half, and Boj and Jones may have decided it wasn't worth the risk aggravating the injury. Again that's just speculation on my part. Bojan was also taken off at the specific time because there's an unwritten rule in the SCFC managers' guidebook to great managing that stipulates that under no circumstances may Bojan - and Adam also - play longer than 59:59 minutes and seconds. Jones just got there a little early... It's a great shame that the managers of our club didn't read any further rules of that great book

You said previously he's played many games on the wing for Barcelona He has. But Bojan then was playing together in a far more flexible system and with players who are slightly more skilled than James McClean. Although Suarez might just beat McClean to being the world's most unsympathetic player... I'm not questioning Jones' decision to play him as a wide left - that's what Paul and several others do. I'm questioning why Bojan can only play instead of McClean, when we know that a fully fit Boj can play just about anywhere across the front line and upper midfield.

Afobe benefits massively from having Bojan around And Bojan benefits from having an intelligent (but perhaps extra sensitive person) player like Afobe in the team. If you remember the goal Bojan scored vs Rotherham. That happened because Afobe went wide left and crossed for Bojan who had moved into central striker position and scored with a header. But they were never allowed to play together again, except for those brief cameos.

Thanks Werrington for that post. To expand on it, Stoke were winning when he has come off in three of his five starts in the league this season, namely Brentford, Bolton, and yesterday against Forest. We were drawing against Birmingham and losing the other at Hull, where in my opinion he was our best player for the first 60 minutes. Here is another article on the same subject: www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/stoke-city-bojan-benik-afobe-2604481

Give him a run of games for godsake. Only an idiot would think otherwise. It doesn’t take a genius to recognise that he’s a confidence player and will need game time to get back to his best. What’s the worst that can happen by starting him week in week out? Hardly like he’s keeping out anyone who deserves to be starting is it.

Couldn't agree with you more , and I've said it myself. In his first season it was about 10 games in before he really clicked and became undroppable up to the injury. I can remember being unimpressed when he first came here. If we are going to get him back to his best he needs game time, and that has always been the case with him. I also think other players need to get used to playing with him. Watching yesterday I was thinking Bojan, make a run out wide into space, then someone will play you in, but he didn't make the run. This happened a few times and thought he was being lazy. But I think he is always looking to receive the ball in tight spaces. He is a quality player that has confidence in his ability. But I don't think some of our players are used to playing balls to players in tight spaces when players are closely marked. He is not a winger, he is a classy midfielder/10. The sooner players play to his strengths, the sooner you will see him getting back to the player we know he is Exactly this, part of his game is beating his marker with his first touch, he can only do that when his marker is close, he was constantly asking for the ball in those situations yesterday.

Exactly right. The other players have to learn to trust Bojan to keep the ball in those tight areas, as you say, he is capable of turning away from an opponent and opening up the space behind. Although Bojan did nothing spectacular yesterday, he did provide the link between midfield and attack by dropping into spaces in between. It was noticeable after he had gone off that we were reduced to hitting long hopeful balls up to Afobe, who was isolated until Ince realised he was supposed to be supporting Afobe.

That’s a really good point. And it’s another reason why he should be playing centrally as an attack minded player. Beating your marker in a tight position with your first touch on the edge of the box rather than out wide massively increases the chances of that first touch paying dividends.

Whatever the merits or otherwise of his inclusion in the side at the moment there is absolutely no doubt he is the ONLY player at the moment who can control a football first time. That's why he has more time on the ball and it's also why our other players have no time on the ball and rush their passes/get tackled.

I have to say that I’ve read some posts which are supportive for his inclusion but that was/is a classic. Its needs displaying on the wall of the changing room at CW. No doubt extra footballing basics will included for additional training

Extra training for Butland.....learning how to kick a ball accurately to somebody further than 10 yards away and preferably wearing a Stoke City kit.

Problem with Bojan is he gets no game time for weeks on end, yet when he gets on the pitch people expect him to tear the opposition apart and slate him when he doesn't the Lad needs chance to get match fit.

I like what NJ is trying to set up and do and feel Bojan is key to get this ticking. I paid particular attention to him during the game as I was comparing it to his previous game where he did quite well. First half he did quite well and naturally faded like someone who‘s match fitness is not there yet so the sub was correct as his influence waned.
One thing I did like is that he was constantly drifting into space between opposing players, constantly watching where his markers were and dropping off them. This allowed team mates the option to play a one/two off him. If not it gave him the important yard to turn with the ball and move off as he was quickly closed down before playing a good pass to a team mate and opening up the opposition.
No, he’s not the premier league maestro that we know and love.... yet! But I still think he has it and his performances will improve over time. Class and technique are permanent and he has it!

It's things like this people like the OP doesnt see, Bojan's probably too intelligent a footballer for some of our team, they don't see him beating 3 players and scoring like Messi and say he's shit

Look he was not great, let's be fair he is not up to speed and may never get there again. But what he does is have positional sense that keeps the space in the midfield for other players to shine. Etebo and Allen both had very god games. My opinion is that it's not a coincidence.

The problem as I saw it was that in the first half he continually was able to find pockets of space in the opponents half, usually fairly centrally, but we did not have players at that stage of the match who had the confidence in themselves to play through the pitch and find him. That was the main reason why he did not contribute as much as he otherwise could have done.

Enjoy them or get your hair shirts on at the Puritan Church of Improvement. jones has no other option than to bring Williams and fletcher on, Adam was shit and woods, well that’s the worst midfielder performance I’ve ever seen, there was no protection of the back four and Williams came on and did a decent job, it’s not NJs fault that we don’t have a proper dm, we actually missed clucas today, although he’s been shit recently he’s been twice as good as Woods, but etebo without him we would be fucked
