I've had Epsom, Cannon and HP ...by far prefer HP. I'm not sure that they are worth servicing ( unfortunately... the throw away age).... Manufacturers sell the printers relatively cheaply, knowing that you have to keep buying their ink

Wouldn't it be nice if there was someone local who provided a service. The guy who used to repair the buggers here packed in a few years back.

No, BJ, I've been doing it for years - and so has Mr Surf, whose printer is virtually identical to mine...... and we've never had a single prob. When I first bought the machine (well both times actually as I'm on my second Brother machine now) I also bought a set of Brother ink cartridges but the cost of them made my eyes water, so when new inks were needed I looked and found some non-Brother inks which promised compatibility with my specific machine model # - so I bought them. I must admit that the first time I tried one of them I did it with my fingers crossed & stuffed in my ears, waiting for the explosion…… but all was well. I fully realised that if it had all gone wrong and fritzed the whole machine it would have been entirely my own fault and a very expensive mistake, but I would have asked for it so couldn't have complained - but there have never been any difficulties whatsoever. I'll PM you in a bit, after I've sorted some info out for Fel.

I put a cheap ebay cartridge in my Epson printer, the message "Cartridge Error -consult user guide" came up, now the bastard thing won't print anything whatever I put in it.
I've tried hitting it repeatedly with a chair, but that has been unsuccessful.
Everyone says "just get a new one", but I'm not playing that game any more.
I just get stuff printed out at the library now and let them deal with printer stress and criminal ink prices.

Right, Fel, here's my tuppence-worth on this:I've always had Brother printers at home (as has Mr Surf) - and have always bought them from Staples Office Supplies. The printers have - TOUCH WOOD - always given really first-class results and have been very reliable indeed & have lasted, trouble-free, for many years. They use 4 cartridges of coloured ink and have got a built-in scanner which can actually come in handy every once in a blue moon if you want to email sth to someone which is not in email form in its own right. They've also got a fax facility which I've never used - yet! - in view of the scanner. I'm sure I recall that you can also do proper glossy photo printing on it, but - as Queen of the Technophobes - I've never gone into that. When my previous Brother machine developed a hitch and stopped printing in colour - (it was still 100% fine for printing just in black, but I needed the colours) - I took it in to these people below in the hope that they'd be able to fix it and - ' as usual with modern machines' - to which BJ has also referred - they gave it a good once-over but said sth to the effect that that 'a small part had gone' etc. in the (I think) colour printer head and - ' as usual with modern machines' - it could be repaired....... but with getting the part/s + labour this would end up costing more than buying a new machine. The person I spoke to at Business Products was called Glenn, and he was very pleasant indeed. I vaguely recall that I had to leave the machine with them for a day or two, and I can't remember whether or not they charged a fee for looking at the printer but I think it might have been sth like £20, which would have been refunded had I gone ahead with a repair - which, in view of their comments about the cost, I decided against. So I bought a new machine & gave the original one to a charity who by happy coincidence were advertising on Freecycle at the time as wanting a printer and were more than happy with it just printing in black. The new one I got was the updated model of my previous one. I've just had a look at my printer file and it looks as though this was Brother printer # MFCJ6720CDW I/JT, which I bought in July 2015. The price was £124.99 and I'm sure there was some sort of Staples special offer on at the time to get it at that price. I'm really surprised as I thought it had cost at least twice as much as that. These were the people I contacted when the previous machine needed looking at: BUSINESS PRODUCTS TEL. SoT 822415 88, MOORLAND RD, BURSLEM, S-O-T ST6 1DY Here's a Staples link for various printers if you're thinking of buying a new one: www.staples.co.uk/search?x=18&y=14&keywords=printersAnd apart from all that, if you happen to have a Brother machine and want to ask about repairs, Brother have a helpline on 0844 - 499 - 9444.

I've got a feeling one of my colleagues contacted Business Products a few years back before setting on a reconditioned HP, like for like and now discontinued

Oh, you're very welcome........ (Sorry - only just noticed your update as I haven't been on the MB for a few days.) And I should have said I was talking about an A3 photocopier as well as it being a printer, but maybe that was obvious.

There's a smallish outfit on the A34 between Church Lawton and Moreton Hall next to the garden centre. Gone past hundreds of times and never jotted their name down.
