As much as he unequivocally deserved it,I think I'd rather see a decent statue of GB erected outside Wembley Stadium than the award of a posthumous Knighthood as an afterthought.
In fact every one of the 'boys of 66' should have one at intervals around the exterior perimeter, imho.

Gordon Banks the best goalkeeper in the world a man who was a world cup winner and a true gentleman dies without being knighted when David Beckham got one, no problem with that if but the irony of a man from a so called golden generation who never looked like winning anything has something a true great of any era failed to get. Those making those choices should be ashamed that it's even a talking point after the great mans passing. I don't think David Beckham has a knighthood, or did he get one recently? 1996 was the year to give every member of that squad a knighthood. They missed that opportunity and although history will forget a lot of people won’t. Gordon Banks was a world footballing personality the same can’t be said for say someone like George Cohen or Jack Charlton and although the whole team should get one you can make special exceptions for Gordon Banks. Geoff Hurst got his for the hat trick and fa schmoozing and Bobby Charlton has been on the world stage primarily in his Man Utd ambassadorial role and Banks is right when he doesn’t begrudge them but acknowledges the inequality. If they give any of the squad one now it would seem an empty gesture and far too late and I’d like to think they would turn it down out of principle. The tributes for Banks show that most people knew he should have had one and sometimes that means more Christ’s sake even Trevor Brooking has one Maybe at the time they thought that winning the World Cup would be a regular occurrence. Perhaps if they knew then that it wouldn't happen again for at least another 56 years, the players would have been knighted. One knighthood that bothers me is Bernard Ingham, Thatcher's press secretary. First of all, why does being a press secretary warrant a knighthood? Second, when you read his letter to Hillsborough campaigners, it becomes clear what an awful human being he was. The letter is so outrageous that I didn't believe it was real at first. www.indy100.com/article/sir-bernard-ingham-the-disgraceful-letter-margaret-thatchers-aide-sent-to-hillsborough-campaigners--WkFP4C0obb

Sorry to rain on everybodies parade regarding posthumous award of a Knighthood for Sir Gordon....knighthood and other honours such as, CBE, OBE, MBE cannot be awarded posthumously. Only decorations and medals for civilian and military bravery can be awarded posthumously. www.gov.uk/honours

The 1776 Declaration of Independence did away with political patronage and titles (at least it was supposed to!)

To be honest the honours system and its rank politicisation has devalued any such award. The way they dish out Dames and Sirs to no-mark sportsmen and women who had one reasonable olympics is pretty pathetic, and the likes of Savile, Cyril Smith, Archer and the like speaks for itself.
He's our Banksie and always will be - that's good enough for me

The knighthood can go shove itself.

That man will always be Sir Gordan Banks to us. I think that he would have preferred that. Just keep him away from the other muck and filth that receive the "honour". He's now St.Gordon as far as i'm concerned.

I never pay any attention to this knighthood thing. Jimmy Savile, Elton John list goes on....can't see the relevance in it. If someone is given a title does it make them a great person, not at all.
