Try some Macadamia nuts. They're a bit more expensive than some of the others mentioned, but still very tasty. Forget the nuts, naps. Love your AV. If you're not careful Lozza's going to be pinching that! It's just a pub sign. I've no seafaring connections, I just like the art of old fashioned pub signs. Just hoping to see a few more victories on the pitch.

This isn't relevant at all - it's not about nuts at all. But it is about diet and how people in other countries view the things that we eat. I met a guy recently that had some very strong views on the things that we eat - he must have been in his 70s, but could have been in his 80s - he looked to be late 50s. This was in Costa Rica. I got to know him quite well - a really lovely bloke. He advocated the quiet life. Don't go chasing riches - peace, health and happiness etc are the keys to most things. He didn't possess a car - but his pride and joy were his bicycle and his donkey! He loved to ride his donkey - made him feel like John Wayne, or so he said. In Central America football is absolutely massive! We think that it is big here, but compared to them it isn't. When you arrive, and they establish that you are from England, the next question is always Where are you from? - Liverpool? Manchester? (They never mention London he he he) You won't believe this! I said that I supported Stoke. He quickly whipped out his phone - hit a few buttons, and we had Tom Jones belting out Delilah! he said Gordan Banks, Stanley Mathews, Denis Smith and sadly, Michael Owen. Anyway - this is about bananas. Apparently they are both a vegetable and a fruit. Buy green bananas - and cook them. They contain vital "stuff" that will protect you from prostate cancer (apparently). Frying green bananas taste the best - but he advocated boiling them (more healthy). He eats them every day. I've often wondered why Lidl sell very green bananas - I just assumed that people buy them so that they last longer. Anyway, I'm going to give it a try. Yellow bananas are also good for you - but as a fruit. Don't cook them obviously. I suppose he didn't mean pop them in tin foil with chocolate buttons in them - and stick em on the BBQ) he also advocated Water Melon - now that I can go along with - I love water melon, sod those honeydew crap things Just something that I experienced recently.
EDIT: if anyone is in the slightest way interested - he had more advice on the foods that we eat ... I will be happy to disclose ....

That's a brilliant post, Clem. The first thing that occurred to me was whether they were green bananas, or plantains? I know folks in the Caribbean eat lots of plantains, often thinly sliced & fried like potato crisps, because that's how I first ever heard of them & ate them. I've just Gg'd 'plantains', and amongst the links that came up there was this Wiki one: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cooking_banana
I tried cooking normal yellow bananas once, yonks ago, in a dessert recipe where they were baked in foil, in their own little bath of Curaçao (the blue liqueur) - however I thought the end result tasted bluddy 'orrible, and the Curaçao bottle's never been touched since and is doubtless still in the back of the cupboard. I should really get it on the Antiques Road Show (or similar) because this must have been at least 35 years ago..... Btw, I've highlighted one line in your post as that's a very important subject and we had a thread on it not too long ago with a number of members making very specific contributions.

Good point, kiddo. I bought a 1kg bag of brazils so I might decant some to the freezer. I use loads of walnuts and coconut too, mainly in cakes. I also bought some 500g bags of mixed nuts to try to remember to reach for during those sudden nom nom nom moments when usually only a vast amount of very moreish cheeselets will do. You know..... you start with one at a time, then it's two, then four, then..... etc., and it's torture to try to stop. Same as wine gums. The Cider vinegar's great, btw. xxx I wish I could start with only one ...I'm full on glutton I can't eat one of anything ...I used to start with a handfull and finish off using a JCB bucket 😁 Which is one of the reasons i had to cut stuff out completely. Glad the acv is working I found it worked better after a few weeks I'm the same…….. can't stop at one. Biscuits are the worst…….. could easily end up eating half the packet in one go and no doubt have done several times in the past …… chocolate hobnobs, chocolate digestives, ordinary digestives, shortbread, chocolate bourbons, gingernuts, dead fly bikkies, lemon puffs, and especially - ooooooohhhhh - those quite big ones of which you get 6 in a pack and they're ultra-gooey and have tons of coconut, and a chocky base…….. Anyway, I digress. Meant to say that I'm not drinking the Apple Cider Vinegar - not so far, anyway (haven't got round to it) - I'm just using it in place of WW or malt vinegar in the delicate crustless little cucumber sandwiches that Parker serves up with various other bijou culinary delights every day at 5pm. You know how it is, Mares - he just loves any excuse to wear those white gloves......

Btw, I've highlighted one line in your post as that's a very important subject and we had a thread on it not too long ago with a number of members making very specific contributions. That's really interesting. The guy that we became friends with, spoke English better that I do. He did actually take us to a banana plantation (Del Monte I think owned it) and he explained the growing and cultivation process. I'd never heard of plantains, but would be a bit surprised if our friend was confusing plantains with bananas. Possible though ....
Just on another matter. After we had visited the banana plantation, he nipped into a shop and came out with a plastic bowl containing cubes of pineapple, water melon and mango - with a few wooden toothpicks to eat them with. WOW - - the stuff we eat from our supermarkets was just so inferior. I'm a bit of a caveman in that I don't really eat much fruit. I can tell you that if produce like that was available here I might consider turning veggie. The pineapple!!! So soft sweet and juicy! Nowhere near as acidic as the stuff that we get.
He seemed a bit miffed that his country couldn't grow apples. I explained that as nice as apples are (and bilberries and blackberries), he has nothing at all to complain about.

Very interesting indeed! Makes me want to go and find my GENUINE hippy beads and check eBay for kaftans & sandals.... But there are obviously a lot of people working very hard behind the scenes on all these enterprises, so absolutely full credit to them. Must confess, though, that from the point of view of hygiene I hate the idea of shops selling foods loose from large bins - you don't know who might have had their mucky little paws in there last! Incidentally, I see Staffordshire isn't listed, either.

Attaboy, Cheesy! Thanks for the recommendation Murph. Over the moon with the product, slight caveat over postage price, as I shared with Northy above. Cheeers. You're very welcome, Cheesy, and I'm chuffed to bits you agree with me that their stuff is very good. Yeah, £6 postage & packing is a bit steep, but if you price up their, say, packets of various nut varieties and then compare them with the same weight of the same products from supermarkets (no doubt in multiples of smaller packs) the price saving on the Grape Tree products is quite good - plus having a large bag of eg. walnuts, brazils or almonds in the cupboard encourages us to get into the routine of having 6, or whatever the recommended amount may be, every day for their beneficial properties. Btw, did your box of goodies contain a lovely brochure relating to the health benefits of certain nuts, dried fruits, etc.? As you've signed up + are now a customer you'll get quite frequent promotional emails from them, and they're always running special offers - I've had one email today (so you probably have too) offering 15% off all on-line orders placed today and there was the same one a couple of weeks ago, so they're quite regular promotions and if you hang fire on placing an order until they run a suitable promo, as per the last one + 25% off all seeds, you can save a bit. And, as you say, there's also a permanent offer of free postage over a certain £ amount spent. I'm sure you're going to get hooked on the place now. But wait till you visit the shop and actually see it all (especially the sunny apricots!) - you'll need a wheelbarrow to throw all your purchases in, because it all looks so good that you'll be unable to resist. Now I'm just waiting for Fel - (whose demonstration of his falling downhill theory "always land on your head and you'll be fine" is fast becoming a YouTube sensation) - to pop up on 'ere and ask me how much commission I'm on, but I'm not on any!

(Aaaaagh - I know we've also got another salty old sea dog, but - stap me vitals, clap me in irons an' give me 40 lashes - I can't remember who it is! ) It's Northy!

I went to the pub last night and there were a group of blokes in straightjackets at the bar telling me they liked my clothes and that I was very handsome. "Don't worry about it," said the landlord, "the nuts are complimentary."
