Superb obituary in the guardian: www.theguardian.com/football/2019/feb/12/gordon-banks-ideal-goalkeeper-age-died-81Apologies for the copy and paste, but a beautiful last paragraph: Banks’s death... encourages us to remember the afternoon when he and the greatest player of all time brought the best out of each other in the Mexican sunshine, two men from the working classes of different continents sharing a moment in which they played the game like angels, and in which Gordon Banks achieved immortality.

Tributes have just been paid to him at Prime Minister's questions by both Corbyn and May. Lucky David Cameron wasn't there or he would have told us how he took so much pride that Banks played for his team West Ham Aston Villa!

A quick story about GB. A friend of mine (an ex-goalkeeper) was getting married. I wrote to Banksy to ask if this fan of his could have his autograph for his wedding day. Gordon must have gone out and purchased a wedding card which he personally wrote in, uplifting stuff about football, marriage and life which I proudly read out on the day ! Contrast : two years later another friend is getting married. I sent blank wedding cards with a note to his three favourite players at the bet365 stadium asking for them to sign his 'wedding day' cards. (Clues : one v short one v tall - both since left - one tenacious midfielder still with us) No replies. I rang the stadium, they said we can't make the players return correspondence, it's up to them but you would have had more chance if you'd sent them to the traiing ground as they'd be placed in their lockers/pigeon holes, so I repeated the process : no replies ! (Despite a letter to the then-manager Paul Lambert and then-captain Ryan Shawcross asking them to intervene. Still nothing. (although Paul Lambert wrote a letter saying all the best to your friend) My partner then took a THIRD batch of cars to the security guard at the training ground and asked him to ensure the players received them, no replies !! Question ; who do these over-paid, over-rated mediocre players think they are ? Not fit to tie GB's bootlaces IMO. My thoughts for the next home game ..... at least FOUR rounds of applause .... 1st minute (England's number 1) 66th minute (world cup win) 72nd minute (Stoke league cup win) and 81st minute. (age of the legend)

I aren't clever enough to be able to put tweets up as a bit of a technophobe.
But Danny Baker has started a twitter petition to try and get all goalkeepers to wear blue tops with number 1 in honour of Banksy.
Great idea and well intended, let's hope no jobsworth at the Premier League or EFL puts a spanner in the works and it comes off.
Well done Mr Baker
Danny Baker @prodnose Follow Follow @prodnose More If you agree that English football should pay tribute to Gordon Banks, a GIANT of the game and position, by allowing goalkeepers this weekend to wear a blue shirt with a white 1 on the back, please RT.
Someone on here more clever than me might be able to put the actual tweet up thanks.

Perhaps Stoke and Leicester could agree to play a pre-season curtain raiser for the ‘Gordon Banks Trophy’ with a maximum of 5 first-teamed each with some younger players being given a chance? Would make a change from the annual Newcastle Town run-out!! d.

Hi Guys, hope you don't mind me posting. Although a Villa fan Gordon has to have been my number 1 football hero. For me the greatest goalkeeper ever. His legacy will always be 'That save' but there is so much more when you start looking. This link was posted on the Heroes & Villains forum www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2019/0212/1029147-gordon-banks/?fbclid=IwAR1tvuizkcCYIAuAkDFg93WldW5bNFTROHYnW7IKa_TtiwuH2lAFsjsqRlMA wonderful read and the last line is quite poignant given the times. Your next home game is against my team. I'm pretty sure you'll pay tribute to the greatest keeper and I'm pretty sure our supporters will not let him down either.

There have been very worthy ‘would-be’ recipients who have been known not to accept such honour. It’s called humility.

I was a season ticket holder throughout the 1970’s and was lucky enough to be at Anfield on Saturday,21st October 1972 to watch what turned out to be Banksy’s last competitive match ( though I wasn’t to know it,of course,at the time). I don’t remember anything about the match itself apart from the fact that we lost 2-1 and Jimmy Greenhoff scoring our goal. But the one abiding memory of that day,and one that will remain for the rest of my life, was the way in which the whole of the Kop roared and applauded Gordon as the teams came out for the second half. Stoke were about to defend the Kop End, and as Gordon reached the edge of the penalty area a deafening roar of appreciation broke out for him. Gordon, humble as ever, merely smiled, nodded his head and raised his right arm in quiet acknowledgment. But for me those few seconds brought a tear to my eyes and made me feel proud to be a Potter.

Was that the legendary Roger Kirkpatrick of Leicester?

Thanks for that,Dave. It brought it all back to me and I shall be watching that video dozens of times over the next few weeks/months!! I just don’t know where you managed to dig that piece of film up from, but thanks very much anyway! Oh,and I’m sorry, Gordon raised his left arm to the Kop and not his right! Forgive me for my “senior moment”!

Great pleasure to have been associated with our one and only world cup winning custodian at Newcastle-under-Lyme College, A super warm-hearted gentleman who had time for everyone. It is a great loss from the Top-Down (National team to grass-roots) and I wish his family all the best in the coming future! Sweet dreams Gordon.

Gordon was the equivalent of a goal start. But looking at that video, even he couldn't beat the ref. I don't remember any other time a keeper was penalised like that.
Loved the guy and like Sir Stan a true gentleman.

I've also suggested to local pottery firms that what we need now, whilst hurting, is commemorative mugs of THAT save v. Pele ! Be nice if a mug was produced with Bank's face + the Pele save + the save he made from Hurst in the 1972 League Cup semi final. Perhaps the last one could be on the base of the mug. I'd pay good money for a mug like that!
