What a gent Banksie was..
Given he'd won the world cup and had a great career ahead of him playing the game he loved, THEN that accident that took all of that away BUT he accepted what had happened to him with such grace and dignity calling it another challenge in life. He had no heirs and graces, and saw himself no better than anyone else. He realised how lucky he had been - not unlucky that he had lost his eye - and saw this as an opportunity to help others...and he did in bundles. He would always sign autographs and you rarely saw him without a smile.
And Stoke City have lost a wonderful President. He was the perfect man for Stoke and I can't see anyone being able to follow in this role at Stoke.
Matthews and Banksie were the two outstanding gents that we as Stoke City fans are so so fortunate to have had the pleasure of witnessing over the years.
I treasure by Cup Final programme signed by all of the team, and top of the tree is Gordon.
RIP Gordon, you were truly a great part of this football team, and this City. You will be missed.

When you look up the word 'legend' in the dictionary, it says Gordon Banks. RIP to a true Stoke and England legend. I'm honoured to have my middle name as Gordon, named after the great man himself.

The best ever, full stop. I remember as a kid standing outside the players car park to get autographs and he never declined signing and always had a great smile on his face that was infectious.
RIP Gordon Banks you will never be forgotten.

RIP Banksy. Everything else aside that you have done, you gave a lifetime of service to our club, over 50 years of involvement, to the very end, and for that, you will always have my warmest thanks. Consummate gentleman, they don't make them like that anymore.

Very sad news, a lovely man and, in a world where the word legend seems to be used way too often, the word certainly applied to Gordon. Rest in peace sir

Tributes from the world of football linkReading all those great tributes, there's one simple one that stands out a mile to me, and sums the great man up to a tee.... "Banks with Yashin made every kid in the park want to be a goalkeeper. Before Banks no one wanted to be in goal" And that's the truth!!!

I’m not from Stoke, but he’s the reason I started supporting them in 1971, aged 8. My hero, I’ve stuck with the Potters ever since, thick & thin. I’d guess I’m not the only one.
My hero, true legend, in the true sense of the word.
RIP Gordon

When I was ten years old and awoke to the news of the car crash I Cried buckets and have done so again today with this news. When Going to watch Stoke City for the first time on my own in the 71-72 season against Crystal Palace, I was tingling with excitement at the thought of seeing Gordon Banks. I was so in awe of him and just watched him during most of the game. I still remember thinking that Gordon Banks is the best keeper in the world and he plays for Stoke City. I still have his autograph [and others of the team] on a faded piece of British Rail paper. That was my first of several meetings with him as a youngster. There is an old saying that ''you should never meet your hero'' but in the case of Gordon Banks, it only enhanced your feelings for him. When you met him, even as a kid, he was such a gentleman and had time for you. I [as so many fans] feel heartbreak today. Gordon Banks, thank you for gracing our club with your greatness and humility. We will never forget you.

Gordon Banks death: Pele pays heartfelt tribute to England's World Cup-winning goalkeeper(sorry admin think this needs posting in full not just a link from one world great to another) For many people, their memory of Gordon Banks is defined by the save he made against me in 1970. I understand why. The save was one of the best I have ever seen - in real life and in all the thousands of games I have watched since. When you are a footballer, you know straight away how well you have hit the ball. I hit that header exactly as I had hoped. Exactly where I wanted it to go. And I was ready to celebrate Pele has paid tribute to Gordon Banks on the day England's World Cup-winning goalkeeper passed away. The family of Banks announced on Tuesday morning that the 81-year-old had passed peacefully. Banks' most famous moment in a football shirt was arguably the "greatest ever save", playing for world champions England against Brazil in 1970. Almost 50 years on from the famous stop, Pele has paid his respects. "For many people, their memory of Gordon Banks is defined by the save he made against me in 1970," he wrote on Facebook. "I understand why. "The save was one of the best I have ever seen - in real life and in all the thousands of games I have watched since. "When you are a footballer, you know straight away how well you have hit the ball. I hit that header exactly as I had hoped. Exactly where I wanted it to go. And I was ready to celebrate. "But then this man, Banks, appeared in my sight, like a kind of blue phantom, is how I described him. He came from nowhere and he did something I didn't feel was possible. He pushed my header, somehow, up and over. And I couldn't believe what I saw. Even now when I watch it l, I can't believe it. I can't believe how he moved so far, so fast. I scored so many goals in my life, but many people, when they meet me, always ask me about that save. While it was indeed phenomenal, my memory of Gordon is not defined by that - it is defined by his friendship. He was a kind and warm man who gave so much to people. "So I am glad he saved my header - because that act was the start of a friendship between us that I will always treasure. Whenever we met, it was always like we had never been apart. have great sadness in my heart today and I send condolences to the family he was so proud of. "Rest in peace, my friend. Yes, you were a goalkeeper with magic. But you were also so much more. You were a fine human being."

Genuinely gutted on hearing the news earlier today.i had the pleasure of meeting the great man at a gentlemen’s evening over 20 years ago. Having purchased two tickets off a vale supporting mate of mine who had won them on a raffle at the pub where the event was being held , me and another pal who was a stokie went along and to our amazement we were seated on the top table on the stage along side Gordon and the comedian. What a night !!! After the introductions and shaking of hands we asked if he would like a drink , if memory serves he had just an orange juice and after that me and my pal never payed for another drink , he got the ale in for the rest of the night . What a diamond of a man . Never saw you play Gordon but I can always say you got me leathered. God bless you R.I.P
