Looks like another sammy Irvine... trust me that’s not a compliment can’t control the ball for toffee... essential when playing in the middle!! Sammy Irvine was coming good when he had his accident. I saw him play away games where he seemed to have much better games. Sammy was definitely a confidence man.

He's more than capable of playing in this league, league 1 or 2? You're talking shite.
You don't go from being player of the year twice in a free flowing "footballing" team to complete shit without there being very good reasons for it. When he first came into the team he was great but obviously, like many other players, his confidence has gone through the floor. This game is 90% mental, remember that.

i really can't understand this situation
i don't think i'm alone in thinking he was a revelation when he joined, we even made him captain (in Shawcross' absence) after 3 games.
there's obviously a good player, but what's happened?

I reckon Jones sees Woods as the base of his diamond. The problem is we don't have the necessary players to deploy that system yet. Give him movement and he will pick the pass, hopefully forward ones.

The team we have now with two good wingers would walk this league, we always look better when Ince is playing wide right, shame about the left side.

If ever a player's unfathomable demise summed up this bonfire of a season, surely it's Woods.
Just another £7m casually tossed aside on the rubbish tip as part of Rowett's £50m Supermarket Sweep dash around the aisles.
How many teams in this league have spend £7m recently? Not many. And yet here we are - his card apparently marked only a few weeks after he signed permanently.
Five minutes played in the last 2 months and presumably on his way.

Clucas is obviously deemed a superior player I guess. It helps that the latter is a leftie though. I was very impressed with Woods when he joined. Could he find a slot if and when Joe moves on?

I hope we keep him and the Manager finds a slot for him where he can play to his strengths. He needs players in front of him who can run off the ball and find space, I think he has the vision but nobody to make passes to - hence backwards, sideways football. PACE and space required from others I'm afraid.

It's an odd one because he seems exactly the sort of player Jones would want, tenacious and quality on the ball. Very odd what happens to players who play for us.

I think its confidence, and he is a perfect showcase of what is wrong with Stoke at the moment.
There is something poisonous and not right within the Club at the moment. Anyone good or brilliant is turning to shit at the club.
If he is here next season when Jones has got his grips firmly on the team and has introduced his style of play and put his stamp on the club he will be the player we bought at the start of the season.

I think he'll come good. I hope we keep him there's a great player in there.
We could have done with someone that took the sting out of Rotherham's fight back in the seconf half on Saturday.
At 2-0 we should hold the ball and go back to go forward, but one back pass and everyone goes mad. Look at Man City and Liverpool they go backwards all the time. I get frustrated whne we go back from daft positions. We get to Butland from a short taken corner, and that drives me mad. The point I'm trying to make is, I do think the constant push from crowd to go forward has affected Woods.

There has to come a point where we stop just writing players off. He has to be of some use to us as he's not a bad footballer by any means. This is the part that worries me about Jones' approach and system. If Woods isn't playing because he doesn't fit it, then are we essentially saying that there needs to be an EXACT spec for every position? That sounds a difficult remit to find 20 exact fits for the positions in Jones' system. Understand Woods isn't the most mobile but wasn't Brentford's system and approach very similar to the one Jones apparently prefers where he excelled?
It's all well and good saying Jones needs his own players but there has to be a way of coaching or using what we currently have too. He has to be adaptable.

He'd probs go to Swansea and be absolutely mint. I have no doubt we'll move him on and focus on 'high-energy' players instead who have v little footballing ability.

If there isn't anything on just switch, return to the back and go again. Keep the ball rather than endlessly lump it to the opposition and lose the ball. Simple football, is so hard to play, but so effective. One of the many issues we have had, is the complete lack of movement from our attackers has been so appalling all we have done is pass it across the back and then revert to type (the hoof). With the correct players in place and the correct philosophy Woods could be vital to us. Whether he gets that chance i'm unsure.

I predict that he will move to another club and light up the league again next season.
Way better than Clucas and can control a game. For some strange reason he developed a fear of trying to pass it forward. Now Jones has shown he doesnt want him.
Every manager has their favourites but even a blindman can see that Woods is superior to Clucas in the middle of the park.
So strange that the same players are picked every week despite playing TOSS.

This is my big worry with Jones- he talks and seems to want to pass blame to fans for having “favourites “, but clearly has his own- McLean, Ince and Clucas. As manager he sees what they do in training, as fans we see what they do where it actually counts , which is on the pitch. I’m no real fan of Ince but he does have talent, just is very inconsistent; I just don’t know what Clucas is meant to be other than versatile; the fact that he’s not particularly good wherever he plays doesn’t seem to matter, yet looking at The Sentinel (Martin Spinks recent articles) there is a concerted effort to get us to believe that Ince and Clucas are the future. Woods has been very poor in the last 4 months, yet probably was MOM in 3 or 4 of his first 7 or 8 appearances- which is certainly more than Clucas and probably Ince. If Jones is serious about improving the team he needs to get to the bottom of why this drop off in form and try and get him back to his first two months in the side.Play him further forwards- he’d have a better eye for a pass than Clucas who has been tried as an attacking midfielder?

He's a better footballer than Clucas and Mc Clean not that that which would take much doing, something has gone drastically wrong since that bright start to blame the fans again is the easy option at least the lad can play football, I would rather keep him than Clucas, Mc Clean, Ince, Vokes and Afobe if we need to free up space.

Absolutely, the forwards are key Afobe, for me he isn't upto it (though he should be best equipped). If it's Vokes you've got ot get close to him.

For Woods see Glenn Whelan. Only effective if the rest of the team is set up to provide him with a pocket of space between defence and midfield. Just keeps the ball moving so when it works it looks like they are being influential but the reality is they rarely make a key contribution. Press them and their lack of ability becomes clear as they need 2 or 3 touches to control and then pass the ball so often get caught or hurried into a bad pass. Cannot tackle or win headers so defensively useless.
I cannot see him being part of NJ's plans myself.
