It's blowing up on the internet lately about the new Hollywood produced film about Ted Bundy with 'heartthrob' Zac Efron as the man himself, lot of people saying it's disrespectful and making Bundy seem charming and approachable and basically romanticizing him.
It got me thinking, do people generally just believe that all serial killers are creepy withdrawn men that you can instantly get a dodgy vibe from? Surely there should be some kind of intent to show that serial killers come in all sorts of personalities and that just because someone is charming and approachable doesn't mean they don't have any ulterior motives?
Curious on your thoughts.

You can never truly know an individuals true intentions/agendas. I imagine being charming and approachable is useful for a serial killer.

There's been numerous bits and pieces around but it does often come back to the fact that genuine psychopaths can be extremely charismatic and because they think in a way that is so unnatural/unconventional to the average person they're extremely effective. In fact, that in itself tends to be what makes them so effective and the average person is just ill-equipped to handle it.
It's worth remembering they aren't always inherently violent either, some can live pretty reasonable lives but are just absolutely fantastic manipulators of people. I think there was a book from someone a few years back who had studied a whole host of psychopaths and pointed out they're far more common than people realise.

Having watched the Ted Bundy tapes documentary series on Netflix I can confirm he was a hugely weird creep It was a cracking watch though, couldn't believe he escaped prison twice and the way he represented himself in court was beyond creepy, like he enjoyed everyone knowing what he'd done. If the case was around today he wouldn't pass a mental examination I can tell you that.

Curious on your thoughts. I caught my daughter watching a documentary on Ted Bundy last week which is not her usual sort of viewing. When I asked her about the interest she said that she was interested in the film and mentioned Zac Efron. I suppose it's all film studio driven hype with Zac Efron as the perfect actor to generate the discussion which leads to the box office. The tv series on serial killers genuinely makes for intriguing viewing.

Curious on your thoughts. The truth is Bundy had a reputation for being charming, charismatic, witty, intelligent. He might well have had a career in politics according to his biographies, but as we know his inner compulsions made him a truly frightening serial killer. Even in Jail he attracted favourable female attention.

On a similar line you've just reminded me of one of Sal's old threads

Was about to say exactly this.
It isn't Hollywood romanticising anything, Bundy was well known for his charm and charisma. It was kinda what made him such a big news story as he was SO different to the stereotypical 50 something reclusive weirdo who lived at home with his mum that people thought serial killers were like. The media lapped it up due to his looks and persona, he was basically the David Beckham of the serial killer world.
The main character in American Psycho was partially based on Bundy, specifically because of that. Charming, intelligent and erudite in public (which he used to his advantage) and then a complete nutter behind the scenes.
