Looking forward to this, a rare thing that more than justify the license fee.

Yes I agree - I've watched all the previous series and really enjoyed them. Douglas Henshall is really good as Jimmy Perez, and I also like the other characters, Tosh, Sandy etc which are good additions although they're weren't in the Shetland books that I've read so far.
It makes a difference from most of the other rubbish that's on.

Shetland starts on Tuesday - I think it's 6 episodes this series, shame there's not more.

Just watched eps 1. Its brilliant stuff, really starting to highlight just how good an actor that Douglas Henshall is. Really good quality in every department. Would love a Shetland movie, would look fantastic on the big screen.

If anyone likes Shetland and the related books, they might enjoy these too. Read them all and all are excellent too.
Would love to see TV adaptations!

It's interesting that Ann Cleeves also writes the Vera Stanhope books. She says she's finished the Shetland series of books now but the TV programmes will carry on with stories "based on the characters" so it could continue for a while yet. She thinks Vera could also continue in the same way even when she's finished writing the books. She apparently also wrote a series about an Inspector Ramsey (in Northumberland as well) and there are rumours this could be adapted for TV as well.

As I said above, I've never visited Shetland and I can tell you that I never will! Fuck me what a crime ridden place. It's worse than Cobridge on a good day.
What I really cannot understand is how the police can miss the obvious. These crimes seem to occur in spates of 6. Get one crime (often a murder), and five more quickly follow over the next five weeks! Then silence. How can (apparently) highly trained detectives not have spotted this?
They should take a look at that place Midsomer. I seem to recall that they had a very similar problem - could this all be the work of the same gang?
Just a thought .....

Enjoyed the first episode but somewhat confused as to why the detective - in a location of just a few thousand people, had no knowledge of the owner of one of the bar/hotels, that's weird.

I've often thought it a glaring omission that we've never had a detective series set in Staffordshire. Especially now we're the monkey dust capital. Think of a Training Day reboot, maybe set on the mean streets of Trent Vale!!

Have to agree if you’re people smuggling the obvious place to hide a few Asians and Nigerian’s is the Shetland islands as there bound to blend in with the the local population

It's OK but not the best I've seen. I prefer a more intimate story set on the island rather than a big conspiracy. Don't like it when it leaves for the mainland. I want to watch Shetland, not bloody Taggart!!

Its one of the few I enjoy along with Vera,Frost and DCI Banks...good British crime. I have watched and rewatched Bosch on Amazon .a decent yank crime series without the usual smaltz at the end of each episode..Having read all the books by Michael Connolly I thought it may lose something...it doesn't.

Could never get into Vera at all, the others are good. Sadly Banks has finished for good. I used to love this one too,got a similar feel to Shetland. Bleak, rugged and isolated, often with a bit of superstition thrown in too. Inspector Gently is another cracker too.

Right I've just watched episode 2 of Shetland - quite enjoying it so far.
Really enjoy Vera as well and pleased that continuing.
I thought the Banks series never quite portrayed the characters anywhere close to how they're described in the books. I thought it was very disappointing overall. Stephen Tomkinson was totally wrong as Banks.
Wycliffe was ok on occasion but generally I thought it was a bit lightweight.
Going back a few years I always used to like John Nettles in Bergerac but when you see the repeats nowadays it looks pretty awful.

Not keen on Bergerac but Nettles is great in Midsomer Murders. It's just not the same with Neil Dudgeon, he's unlikeable and the writing just isn't as good.Even the assistants aren't as good.
Let's enjoy that wonderful Shetland theme, a longer version too
