Windies fielding has been awful - several dropped catches (thankfully) ! We put a couple down too but i think the biggest difference between the 2 teams is running quick singles and turning easy ones into twos. Hitting it out of the ground is fine, but even with his amazing innings, I figure WI were 30 runs light of what they could have got because Gayle couldn't run. Reminds me of a chap I used to play with. His initials were A.M. but he was always entered in the storybook as N.Q.S. Every time he came into bat, he'd say "No Quick Singles, I was on the ale last night."

Currently cruising needing 58 runs from 58 balls. It has been an impeccable performance with the bat and we bat so deep. Any team that can afford to leave Alex Hales our must be strong. I worry about our bowling for the World Cup as we lean on our batting and it will eventually under perform in some games.

I worry about our bowling for the World Cup as we lean on our batting and it will eventually under perform in some games. English wickets and conditions are very different, though. Our attack will be in their element with more seam and swing. I reckon it'll come down to which batsmen can cope with (and score off) a moving ball rather than hit it into the crowd. I might peruse some betting options to see what odds there are for there being 20 wickets taken in a few matches - I.e. both sides bowled out.

Great win to chase down 360 and win by 6 wickets with an over to spare - terrific performance throughout the innings, kept the score ticking along nicely, but a bit lucky with the dropped catches. Century for Root as well (pity about the wicket).

What a great way to spend a winter's evening.
England's batting line up is simply awesome.
That was a record run chase for us today; one of the highest ever in test cricket. But we made it look like a stroll in the park.
Well done boys. A good start to a big year in 50 over cricket.

Great batting performance by England... I can’t wait for the World Cup to start... With their batting power, England must be in with a great chance.

Superb game management. Roy set us up beautifully and the others just knocked it about nicely with boundaries here and there.
Superb bowlng by Stokes and Rashid. Morgan put Rashid on far too late + he got tonked at the end but his first 7 overs were excellent.
Anyone see the SA v Sri Lanka first test? Possibly the greatest ever solo batting performance by Perera. 153 off 200 balls to see SL win the test by 1 wicket. Not just the run scoring, but farming the bowling too. 78 last wicket stand with Fernando scoring just 6 but only having to face 27 balls whilst Perera racked them up at the other end and kept him away from the strike. Classy performance and a great team ethic.

I see ESPNCRICINFO, using their interesting methodology, rate it the best innings of all time ( link). Of course it is a one off individual performance. Sadly, I suspect it will be a one off for the side as well who have been pretty hapless in recent test series. It would be nice though if they can build on it and achieve a series win in South Africa. Coming on the back of the Windies beating us, it would breath life into test cricket more broadly.

It was a brilliant innings in a magnificent match. What more could anyone want than a test match that ends with the team batting last scoring 304-9 to win, where there could have been a win for either side or a tie until the last ball. (The only fly in the ointment was that Sky Sports Main Event switched to something else when Sri Lanka still needed 40 odd to win. ) South Africa are currently 73-4 at lunch on the 1st day of the 2nd Test, so who knows? 365 days a year cricket is the big perk of retirement that I had never considered beforehand. Cricket in the West Indies and South Africa is perfect for the English winter. I can do whatever I need to do in the early morning and then settle down for an afternoon of cricket on the telly. Couldn't have planned it better!

Couldn't have planned it better! I've thoroughly enjoyed it all whilst being off work for 3 weeks with a torn back muscle. Too many years of trundling my arm over and particularly wicket keeping.
Always made a point of watching the Oz Boxing Day test, hadn't really watched many matches other than that if England weren't involved. Enforced bed rest put me right. I fully agree, the more countries that are competitive in tests, the better for the test game as a whole. Of course I'd rather we'd beaten the Windies, but them winning the series was a much-needed boost for them. SL possibly heading for a maiden test series win in SA? I hope they do it.
Also managed to catch a few documentaries, particularly Nasser Hussain in India. His program around the maydans (?) in Mumbai was fantastic. Must have been 10 matches going on at once on overlapping outfields. Insane. As Nass pointed out too, even though they were club matches and largely juniors/youth players, the batsmen weren't just slogging the ball, they were genuinely defending properly and playing orthodox shots. Fantastic to watch.
The crowds over there may want the IPL and not care too much about tests, but every one of the players Nass spoke to, young and old, said test cricket was the best form of the game. Good on them.

I was in Mumbai on business a few years ago and took the opportunity of a rest day to take a stroll around the city including a walk around the maidans. It's an astonishing place in an astonishing city. I don't understand why, with so much passion for the game, they get such poor attendances for test matches. Particularly in Mumbai when the test ground is in the heart of the city ( just a few minutes walk from the maidans).

Really sloppy finish from us tonight, Stokes and Buttler cruising at one point.
Ali very disappointing with the bat again, can’t remember the last time he made any sort of contribution with the bat in any format.
Have to say that West Indian umpire made two of the worst calls i’ve seen. Firstly he failed to call a wide off Gayle’s bowling when he fired it about two foot down the leg side, no real harm done but it was a straightforward a wide call as you’ll get.
The Curran lbw decision was just something else though. It was that bad you surely have to consider some kind of corruption?

Sri Lanka have now completed a thoroughly deserved 2-0 series win in South Africa (something neither India or Pakistan have ever managed to do).
We live in strange times!

I think it was poor tbh - apart from good efforts by Stokes and Morgan. To lose our last 6 wickets for just 35 runs was really poor, especially when we are considered to be the best side in the world and with a long batting line up.

ODI World record of 24 x 6's !
Buttler smashes 150 off just 76 balls - 13 x 4's and 12 x 6's - wow !
