Just seen this curious stat about Joe Root on the BBC cricket page.. "Joe Root's first-innings average between 2014 and 2017 was 76 and 38 in the second. It's reversed since the 2017-18 Ashes - it's now 25 and 54" Odd, very odd. Standard isn't it? Make best batsman captain and see run score suffer. How many times have done this? To score less runs it can happen but to have a significantly better average in the 2nd innings isn't normal is it?!

The symmetry of the numbers though is extraordinary.

At last - a good day with the bat for England.
Ok, it was against a depleted attack. But, nevertheless, runs are runs. And a Joe Root century is a good way to close out the series and look ahead to the Ashes. Plus Buttler looks like a proper batsmen and Stokes, back where he should be at #6, has finally remembered how he bats best. Our engine room looks to be in reasonable condition.

With Jennings failing yet again, and now apparently completely (thankfully) out of contention for an Ashes place, do we go with Burns and Denly as our opening pair in the first test against the Aussies ? I can't see that we have much of a choice as there aren't any other realistic alternatives are there ?

There are options - as said earlier Warner and Watson both became openers without showing their credentials as red ball openers: Warner came from white ball cricket, Watson was pushed up from the all rounder position at #6. Meaning, why not, for example, open with Roy and Woakes.

Windies 50-4 in second innings, still needing 435 to win !
Jimmy Anderson with 3 early wickets.

Well done England.
Ok the Windies were below par - missing their captain was a big blow for them. But we got the benefit of a better selection - so far as the bowling is concerned. Wood was of course the surprise star turn, but a special shout out to Mo for a (surprisingly) good showing in both innings. Also good to see the engine room kicking into gear; Root, Buttler and Stokes all getting runs. Still no idea what to do about the top 3 though.
Now - onto pajama cricket.

I think Denly is a #3 and not an opener so we still need to find a Jennings replacement. If it was me, I'd pick Jason Roy and hope he can have a similar impact to what Warner had for Australia.

I don't think Denly is a #3. What we really want in this team is a blocker at 3 whose job is less about scoring runs than occupying the crease. We've become concerned about how often we've lost 3 wickets before we've scored even 50 runs (and reasonably so) but the bigger issue from a team perspective is losing those wickets so quickly exposing our power house middle order to a new(ish) ball and fresh fast bowlers. In this test, our top 3 managed to hold out for 30 odd overs which helped Buttler and Stokes out particularly. And they both capitalised. So, if I was a selector, with the position we are in I'd be looking less at average scores and more at balls faced for the problem position of #3. Someone like David Steele.

I think the complete opposite tbh, opinions eh?! Yes, it's the openers job to see off the new ball but equally we play far too tentatively at the top of the order which leaves us between a rock and hard place. We neither attack or defend convincingly and I'm sick of watching players like Jennings "hang around" for 80/90 balls hardly scoring a run knowing he's going to get out sooner rather than later. We basically need players at the top who play with total conviction. If they're a blocker they need to make sure unlike Jennings they keep the drive in the kit bag but I'd still prefer a Roy type, someone who attacks with conviction. Do you know what Hales' average was as an opener? I suppose he's the last Roy style of player who's opened for us for a run of games so would be interesting to see how stands up against the recent players who have been picked.

I think we may actually agree. I would prefer to have our top order be capable of attack not just stonewall defence. I'm thinking of the likes of Trescothick, Gooch, Greenidge etc. But if we don't have anyone like that, then rather than look at scores i'm suggesting they look at occupancy as a guide for what they can do for the team. It's not ideal - I'm sort of suggesting a glorified nightwatchman whose purpose is to protect the middle order. Needs must!

Pajama cricket now underway.
And the 1st ODI looks like it might be a cracker; Windies currently 242-4 off 37 overs with Gayle going strong.

360-8 after 50 overs - I think it's going to be difficult. Great knock from Gayle (again). Plunkett, Moeen and Rashid were expensive.

How does Plunkett get in ahead of Tom Curran? watched a lot of Big Bash cricket this year and Curran was excellent.

Caught a few snatches of the odi so far. Brilliant comment from Dujon when Gayle was putting dents in the roof. Probably an old one but first time i'd heard it:
The spectators have become fielders and the fielders become spectators.
Shaping up to be a good one this. The wicket's a bit of a road and we bat deep. I fancy us to chug along and win it in the final over.
