Hallelujah!
Some English cricket to get our teeth into.
The first warm up game has just finished. One more to come before the 1st test kicks off a week today.
It would seem our line up will be something like this;
Jennings Burns Bairstow Root Stokes Buttler Foakes Ali Woakes / Curran Broad Anderson
The main selection question for the first test is the third seamer. It could be either Woakes or Curran. I'd go for the former.
The main selection question for the series is the performance of the top 3. They all need to perform to keep their places for the Ashes.

I'd actually forgotten the 1st test was so close ! Looking forward to it - seems strange not to see Cook at opener though.

Not convinced by Bairstow at 3, I think Stokes is better suited to it in all honesty if it's a choice between the two.

How many wicketkeepers are we playing... is it a back three with overlapping wide men in the gully and fly slip ?

Did I hear on my way home that Broad got a hat trick in the warm up match today?

I honestly didn't know there was a series coming up. I have a soft spot for the Windies, growing up with the great sides of the 70's and 80's.
I assume it's on Sky, as I have BT? 😜

Flying out to Barbados on Sunday, first time watching England abroad. Lucky you - I want to do this some time soon. Are you doing it all yourself or travelling with some company like Howzatt or the like ? Hope we win - have a great time !

Hope we win - have a great time ! Going with Barmy Travel who are linked to the Barmy army, looked at Howzatt and Thomas Cook sport and they were all very similar but with my daughter and son in law tagging along it was cheaper with Barmy travel. I'm taking a Stoke flag so hopefully it'll be seen.

1st test starts later today
Seems Curran will get the nod ahead of Woakes while Broad could miss out to accommodate Lynch as a second spinner.
No problems with this - nice to have options.
That said - I think the pace attack might be a little weak because Curran and Stokes are more like 4th seamers than opening bowlers

Despite their low standing in the cricketing community over the last 20 years or so, we've not beaten the West Indies in the Caribbean since 2004 and Harmison's 7-12 at Sabina Park.
We lost in 2009 in which we were bowled out for 51. This was then followed by Andy's Flower's glorious reformation of the team between 2009-2012.
And in 2015 we drew disappointingly after going 1-0 up, Anderson went past Botham's record and Trott's international career came to a sad end after being asked to open the innings.
Time to put this one right.

Here we go.
"Working from home" so well up for this one, my money is on an England victory.
Harsh on Broad to be left out but the pitch looks spin friendly.....

Sloppy start from Anderson and Curran..... Picking Curran ahead of Broad as an opening bowler on the basis that he is a better batsman may well be a mistake.

We've bowled absolute dross so far it has to be said.... He's a second change seamer. As is Stokes. In a 4 man pace attack you might get away with that. In a 3 man attack it's a big risk. Once again, we seem confused in our selection strategy. I think you should always keep it simple; pick your best 5 batsmen, your best wicket keeper (to bat at #7), your all rounder then your 4 best bowlers to give you the balanced attack you want (noting what bowling option the all rounder gives you). On the positive side - the start from the Windies may mean we have a good series on our hands.

Wow - just realised they've gone for Rashid as the second spinner.
Now I am worried.
4 bowlers who strength is attack. Just one you can rely on to provide control.
This seems more like an ODI bowling attack not a test match one.

Brilliant from Anderson this, 4-30 from 23 overs has given us the edge. Apart from his bowling and a real good 5/6 over spell from Stokes we've been really flat today.....

Day 1 over - some thoughts...
First - how brilliant is it having near enough a full day's cricket to enjoy when you come back from work. I love it when England tour the Windies
Superb last session for England puts us on top. Anderson is pure class. Stokes a very hand support act.
The Windies batting looks not too bad - and they have a real prospect in Hetmeyer. This could be a very competitive series. I hope so anyway.
We got our selection wrong. We've picked a 5 man bowling attack and still ended up 2 bowlers short; we're missing an opening bowler and a front line spinner..
Onto day 2 - and our top order gets a chance to show what they can do. Let's hope it's better than what we've seen in recent times!

To finish at 264-8 is pretty good as we were lacking in our bowling for much of the day - thank goodness for Jimmy Anderson. I'm not particularly impressed with the team selection (batting or bowling) but maybe the top order will surprise us and produce some much needed good performances and good scores as well.
Looking forward to day 2 - wish I was there !

The best of it is that my wife actually said last year that I should go and watch a couple of the Windies tests but at the time she was fairly poorly with sepsis and I didn't have the heart to get it booked. It slipped my mind for a while and by then we'd booked another holiday for March this year so I didn't follow it up. I was watching the game this afternoon when the missus wandered in and said "I thought you were supposed to be going to go out there to watch this weren't you"? I just muttered under my breath !

Didn't get into the ground until ten minutes before play so unfortunately didn't get to put my flag up, but I did see the one you mention and spoke to the couple who own it, there was also another Stoke flag at the pavilion end but it was in the upper tier so wouldn't have been seen on tv.

Sam Curran to me looks like a bowler we should only be using in home tests and conditions, for now anyway. Also, how has Rashid gone from 3rd choice spinner in Sri Lanka to 2nd choice meaning Leach who bowled well in that series gets left out?! Bit odd I think.

Also, how has Rashid gone from 3rd choice spinner in Sri Lanka to 2nd choice meaning Leach who bowled well in that series gets left out?! Bit odd I think. Curran is a 4th seamer all rounder. Only thing is, we've already got one of those in Ben Stokes. The selection of Rashid is simply bewildering. It would make some sense if he was the second spinner alongside Leach but not Ali who remains, despite all his wickets, a second string spinner. Yesterday showed why. He was appalling. He was that bad Root decided to bowl a few overs. A first string spinner has to provide control in the first innings then go on the attack in the second. Ali, in fairness, is pretty good at the second of those, he's hopeless at the first. As mentioned earlier, we've picked a 5 man bowling attack yet ended up short of two key bowlers. Poor selection decisions from England.

Jimmy’s reminding me of Glenn McGrath before his injury at Edgbaston in 2005, virtually impossible to score a run off, pinpoint accurate, getting big wickets late on in the day. If you cut out those first 20 tests or so before he really settled on an action and bowling role (Swing as oppose to pace) his average would be signifcantly lower than it already is.
