The first thing Jones needs to do and do quickly is to either create a vocal leader on the pitch to carry this rabble through or more likely just go out, find one, buy him and put him straight into the team.
Until that happens we will just dither along.

We haven't had a captain for years now.

We also need leaders on the pitch. Leaders who hate losing.

Joe Allen perhaps, although he probably won't be around for long.

I thought exactly the same last night. The thing is - leaders take time to be accepted and then respected enough to make a difference. NJ could bring in someone tomorrow and it would still be a few games before that person had any influence. I don't know if he has any one in mind (I don't think there is anyone on the current playing staff that could step up), but this season is now a write-off and I don't think we'll see "New-Stoke" until next season.

One of the first duties of the captain is to call the Toss, so this must be a confusing situation as he takes one last look at his teammates Your Toss, Your Toss , Your Toss, Your Toss, Your Toss

Who would opt to become the Captain of the Titanic, when you know a fucking big Iceberg is waiting for you? Someone from Stoke! Literally! That comparison doesn't quite work in S-O-T unfortunately

I think Shawcross should remain club captain but on his current form he shouldn't be played. It should be handed to another, I'd be tempted to give it Woods as he had his best games for us when he was captain and barking orders.
Shawcross knows the club inside and out and has seen us at our best and at our worst, we don't know what happens on the training pitch etc but nevertheless he must remain a leader in some capacity.

Gerry Taggart springs to mind. If we could bring someone in of his ilk the rest of them would basically have two choices... A. Man up B. Have him beat the shit out of them And before people start whinging on about how the game has moved on etc, remember, this is football, it's not rocket science. Players are generally not sensitive intellectual types, in fact the brutal truth is that they are usually pretty fucking thick. In the end, if any team, playing any style, cannot get the basics right, they are fucked.

The two Ryans - Shawcross (non-playing) club captain, Woods team captain. Why? Shawcross is a role model but he never comes across as a leader on the very rare occasions he does interviews, and he doesn’t strike me as the most intelligent footballer. We should have one captain, someone who is a leader and will the the first name on the team sheet. Woods / Allen / Butland are the only real candidates for me. If there really is a need for a club captain then I’d pick Crouchy every time, he is a great character and a superb role model, and he comes across very well in every interview I’ve seen him in. He is certainly not camera shy like Ryan is.

How quickly people forget all that Shawcross has done at, and for, our club. Why should he be club captain whilst still at the club? Respect for his achievements and contribution over 11 years!

I just don’t think Shawcross has ever been suited to the role, he was a great player for us but he has never been the best choice for captain, he’s not vocal enough. I have the utmost respect for him for what he has done, but in our predicament there is no room for sentiment, we need to turn things around and stop the decline of 3 seasons.

After watching the shambolic performances of Williams and BMI I’d pick Denise Coates at Centre Half before either of them- she’s certainly got more balls than either of those 2.

A successful team works well with a number of leaders / good characters. Pulis instilled this in the team perfectly which made us the way we were. Overtime the players have been replaced by others who did not have the same fight and others who were a bunch of self righteous pricks.
Jones has the same mentality as TP in that they need to be the right fit, hopefully we can start to rebuild to a passionate squad again, which will most certainly take time.

Were it not for things you have pointed out here I think he would have ran out of credits with a lot of people a long time ago. Sad as it is to watch, and say, his performances of late and the example being set to others on the field of play, are nowhere near what is required from the club captain. The attempt at a tackle on the edge of the box for Brentfords third on Saturday was truly horrific.

Shawcross the idle bystander watching the ship sink you mean???! I see woods often having a go at shawcross for not having a go at others... Shawcross barely reacts.
Think his ship sailed when he turned on the fans

The worry is you look at that team and there isn’t a stand out captain! For me it would have to be Adam. He’s come in admittedly against lower opposition but he’s ran the show, put his all in and we know how passionate he is. I genuinely can’t think of anyone else

Think his ship sailed when he turned on the fans His reaction when we concede is definitely “head down” which is the polar opposite of what we need. I’m don’t think Shawcross ever turned on the fans though, he is a true professional. We need someone intelligent, with character and some fire in them to lead this team. Perhaps NJ should bring in someone new for the role, ideally a colossal CB.
