www.mirror.co.uk/sport/2008/05/30/west-brom-boss-tony-mowbray-slams-kevin-phillips-89520-20588622/West Brom boss Tony Mowbray slams Kevin PhillipsTony Mowbray has slammed Kevin Phillips for "hawking" himself to rival clubs and warned he will not wreck Albion's wage structure to keep the former England striker. Phillips scored 24 times to help the Baggies back to the top flight. But a stand-of fhas developed between Phillips - who turns 35 in July - and the club, with the player unhappy at being offered only a 12-month contract. Phillips, who has 46 goals in 81 appearances since joining from Aston Villa in 2006, is a free agent and wants a two-year deal. Advertisement The West Brom boss and Albion's hard-nosed chairman Jeremy Peace refuse to compromise and have also adopted a tough stance with out-of-contract midfielder Zoltan Gera and defender Martin Albrechtsen, who are stalling on new terms too. Mowbray said: "For me, it should never be about money. "We're not in the business of them going out and checking the rest of the world, coming back with their best offer and asking us to beat it - we don't operate like that. Our offers will stay the same, but can only remain on the table for a certain amount of time as we have to start knowing if we need to fill places. "They will be offered the best contract this club can offer. Their agents know that and if they want to hawk them around and get a better price and salary package, we won't be budging." Phillips has been offered a two-year deal by Championship side QPR and is attracting interest from Premier League rookies Stoke.
That may appeal as he has just bought a house outside Birmingham.[/b] Hungary international Gera, 29, is wanted by Everton, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and Bolton. But Mowbray is wary of caving in having witnessed Ipswich implode when relegated in 2002 after two years in the top flight after signing Finidi George and Matteo Sereni on huge wages. "The squad is what everyone must respect. We won't be bursting the bank for any single player," added Mowbray, who played and coached at Portman Road. "I've seen it happen and it can be bad for a dressing room. "We won't be breaking structures, it's that simple as I want to be fair to the other players. "If they get better packages out of our ball park and want to ply their trade elsewhere for more money, then good luck to them."

46 goals in 81 appearences, blimey.
I'd snap him up tbh along with another striker to help Ric out. It's another one of those rumours which you really don't know what to think of though!
Good find FM.

Too old, good on the Baggies though, feck the mercenaries out and replace them with other mercenaries (and frank Skinner).

wouldn't think he has two years left in him assume we would also need to break our wage structure to accomodate him so think any deal would be unlikely

This is the kind of mercenary after one last big pay day we need to avoid.

Still a class player though, isn't he? And although they got beaten by Portsmouth in the semi, he was the best player on the pitch.
Him and Harewood plus Fuller and Mama wouldn't be a bad quartet to start the season with.

Let money bags QPR have him. He's still got it at that level, but surely not at Premiership level these days. For the wages he must be after to provoke that kind of response from Mowbray, we can get someone younger IMHO.

Good Championship player definitely. If he was good enough for the Prem he would have been back there before now.

Better player than Fuller though, surely....?
He certainly hasn't gone on patches of 16 games without a goal at CHAMPIONSHIP level.

I honestly don't think Fuller is good enough for the Prem either. Time will tell.

Fuller's got all the talent in the world - I just worry about him as a goalscorer. He's pretty much a match for anyone for pace, power and individual ability.
But with fewer beautiful individual goals on offer in the Prem, it's a concern.
He's not the type who gets on the end of crosses, scores with headers or scores ugly goals - and this could be exposed more int he Prem.
Whereas Phillips is a born goalscorer and finisher, isn't he?

Mowbray has also criticised Gera and one of their other big players, saying he would let them go rather than break the wage structure.
The ship doesn't sound so steady in Rio de Smethwick ;D.

I cant honestly see Stoke paying higher wages than WBA, Remember when one of our favourite sons moved to Brazil because they were offering silly wages compared to Stoke. I know things have changed since then but i doubt they have that much.

Good on wax face, I assume Pulis will adopt the same stance and not break the wage structure because it always catches up with you.

I'd love to see him in the team. Tone likes him too. What was it he said? He never wastes a pass or something?
