Interesting comment from their forum about Woods “Although a good player, far too often he slowed the play down unnecessarily” Didn't that used to be the comment about nzonzi The Crab? 'Holds on to the ball too long' 'Knocks it from side to side' 'Slows things down' 12 months after N'Zonzi left. 'Genius' 'Best holding midfielder ever' Etc etc etc etc...

Have we actually paid any money for Woods yet and if not, are we committed to do so?
To me he's just like 5th defender. Rarely crosses the halfway line, and with the back four that never score plus the goalkeeper, that's over half your team who are defensively minded. With that kind of setup we are never going to score enough goals.

I thought he was a breath of fresh air when he first joined and was excellent at Sheffield Wednesday. However, as the games have gone by and maybe due to the general shitness of the side, his performances have just gone downhill. He’s ok at passing the ball and holding position in front of the defence but off the ball, he offers absolutely nothing. I’ve been every game this season and I genuinely can’t recall a single tackle he’s put in. He’s too lightweight and we need an athletic, big holding midfielder if Jones wants to implement 4-1-2-1-2. We know from his first few games with us that Ryan has the talent and I'm sure given time, he can be the solution to the base of the diamond. I agree with everything that Dentyscfc said though and I hope NJ's fitness coaches have put him on a programme to transform him into more of a unit so he can couple strength with the awareness and skills by the start of the new season.

Unfortunately I think Ryan was given more jobs than he accounted for by coming here. He would have had a distinctive role at brentford but here he'll be asked to cover the whole of the other roles to Bail out the indiscipline of the other players.

He would have had a distinctive role at brentford but here he'll be asked to cover the whole of the other roles to Bail out the indiscipline of the other players. NJ's task is to bring that discipline back. Sure, at Brentford Ryan's job was to spray out the passes and dictate play. Under NJ, he needs to be able to do that alongside protecting the back four as well as being confident enough to slot into a back five if necessary. He's a professional footballer who's still developing and he can learn this when he acquires more strength and stamina in the gym. Protecting defence is easier when you actually have one worthy of the name, so maybe NJ will play Ryan alongside Etebo in DM until he brings in new defenders. Or maybe we'll see less of Ryan this season until he has bulked up more and the defence replaced. Either way, I'm still confident Ryan can be the future for us. He blew us away when he arrived and with the right coaching for NJ's methods, he'll get back on form.

To be fair he was playing well right up to when Shawcross came back and was given the Captains armband again. Whether that had any effect on him or not I’m not sure, but he’s not been the same player since.

The stats don’t lie, we’re a much better side without Shawcross in it. Sad considering all he’s achieved at the club but also very true.

Shadow of the player who was our last years player of the season. We gave him zero time on the ball closed him down quickly. The first half watched him closely as he was over my side of the pitch he was getting frustrated with his teammates who weren’t showing for him so he was getting caught or passing backwards he looked lost. For us he would break up play and get the ball to our playmakers maybe via a few one touch passes he was always on the move last season away to Fulham he was the best player on view amongst some very talented ones for Fulham.Hes never going to get you goals or find a killer pass but as you saw when he first joined you he can be an exciting player really hope the new manager can get him back to the player he was he’s a great lad and as you would have seen respected by most of our fans by the ovation he got when subbed Saturday.Good luck for the rest of the season

I think we expected too much of Woods.
He wasn't even a 1st team pick for a Brentford team below us in the table when we signed him was he?

Whatever he is, he's not suited to the base of a diamond. Clucas isn't suited to the left, Allen isn't suited to the right. I thought we had all the tools ready for Jones to pick up and run with? Ince will be fine at the tip, as will Bojan. Then there is the Etebo conundrum. Doesn't do much defending, is inconsistent in the tackle, doesn't really make a killer pass, has few assists to his name and isn't really a goalscorer. Looks like I might have been wrong about Ince. Two assists aside he's been virtually anonymous. Odd player 🤐

I don't know where it leaves Woods, but a monstrous defensive midfielder is an even bigger priority than a new full back and a target man.

Yes I read that too , I said when we signed him this season at the end of August, he hadn't featured for Brentford except in the League Cup. Anyway it seems the reason for that was because he was known to be leaving so I don't have the answer as to what the problem with him is.

Shadow of the player who was our last years player of the season... For us he would break up play and get the ball to our playmakers maybe via a few one touch passes he was always on the move This great summary from billybee emphasises to me that Ryan can be our man. Clearly he performs better when he has a more dynamic group of players around him, but who doesn't? NJ will be working tirelessly to implement his methods and drill more positional awareness into our midfielders, either current or new players. This will allow Ryan to become a confident mover and passer again. But he does need to add a few more KGs to his dumbbells.
