He needs some big physicality alongside him. A monster one side of him and a nippy player ahead of him, and two wide men that can play and he will flourish. In Saido, Clucas and Ince we have those wide men that can play.
In Bojan (no laughing at the back Gary) we have the nippy player to play in behind. We just need that horrible monster, and a manager that can play Bojan in a system to make him thrive, and not pay lipservice to him and give him the odd bone in central midfield here and there.
Monsters don't get any more horrible than Charlie Adam, but surely you're not suggesting we give him another contract!

I do really like Woods and think he'll be a real player for us in the long term, but I do have one massive gripe with him...every week he dicks about with the ball in our own penalty area unnecessarily, the worst case of this was probably Saturday when eventually the ref blew for a foul on him in he second half (couldn't see if it was a foul or not) but he does it at least once a game and has got very lucky on a few occasions already. Needs to cut that out.

He was absolute quality for the first three or four games after he arrived. If we're being honest, he has been pretty poor since then. The major is issue is that he can't run properly. Maybe Rowettt has coached the ability out of him? Just as the 3/4 good games he had when he came didn't make him really good the three or four bad ones he's had don't make him shit. If he wasn't a run of the mill player, he wouldn't be here, would he? He's nothing special, but better than what we've come to know over the past couple of years. The problem is with a large number of posters on here if you have three good games on the trot - you're brilliant, the best thing since sliced bread. If you have three bad ones on the trot you're shit, a complete waste of money etc. Totally agree. I think he is a victim of that because he was so good in those first few games It's not just three or four now though is it? I would say for at least six games his obvious deficiencies have been on show. He's not that old though, so hopefully he can adapt the defensive side of his game bit and continually improve like Whelan did.

There's a huge improvement, holds the ball up well and gets others involved, seems to be enjoying his football, Rowett has managed to do what 2 possibly 3 other managers failed to do in getting him to look like an actual footballer, but hey that doesn't fit with the Rowett bashing. Compared to when he first joined to now there's a huge improvement however you want to look at it. We’re also playing in a significantly weaker league. You would expect players to be better in this league. True but in the few appearances he had when he first arrived he was doing very little if any of the work he's doing now.

He is the main reason we have stopped shipping goals and he should get more credit for that than he is.
His protection of the back 4 from counter-attacks is better than Glen Whelan managed, he always seems to win clearances and be in the right place at the right time.
Other plus points he is eminently comfortable on the ball and normally finds his man with a pass.
I think the problem comes when we also EXPECT him to become the creative force. He is not an Andrea Pirlo and never will be. He is there to win the ball and give it to the likes of Allen and Ince to create. The problem is that Allen is not really a creative player either.
Playing Bojan in between Woods and Afobe to link the play would clearly be the best approach but Rowett refuses to try it out.

The main reason we have stopped leaking goals is because we have gone ultra defensive as a team at the sacrifice of scoring goals. I’ve yet to see Woods make a tackle or win a header... he’s slow and weak as piss. Positionally he’s pretty decent. His passing on the other hand, it’s gone to pot and he’s gone to the Charlie Adam school of making stupid passes in dangerous areas. Anything other than a sideways pass and he generally fluffs it. He’s generally a steady player and is playing at the right level.

I don't really understand the criticism of him. He does the Glenn Whelan role very well and a lot of his good work goes unnoticed.

Because that would mean people admitting that Rowett has signed some decent players. Positives: Woods Ince Clucas Negatives: McClean Martina Indifferent: Williams Afobe Non-Rowett: Etebo I would say he's been up and down and probably has a similar conversion rate of "good signings" as most managers we could expect to have. His issues have been surrounding treatment of certain players (Bera, Bojan, Bauer). Substitutions which are simply horrific. Hammering square pegs into round holes - where have we seen that before? And a very strange outlook on where we need to strengthen (3 RBs and 1 LB) Overall I think he's a poor manager and certainly not what we need to get back up, but I can certainly appreciate his good signing as I would imagine most people can.

True. Galling thing for me was stubborness that led to a lack of a further PL loan signings, to give us the required goal scoring threat to challenge at the top: Barnes, Abrahams, Wilson, Mount. Barnes (say) on loan, plus Jack Marriot, instead of Maclean and we'd have far more potency. Vydra from Burnley in Jan maybe - scored 1 in 7 and looks on the edge of things already there?

I would describe Martina as an indifferent and Williams as a positive (after a shaky start). He has turned Berahino back into a decent player and given Bojan more of a chance than he has had for at least three years (which Bojan hasn't taken). I don't understand what happened with Bauer. In the recent first choice eleven, I'm not sure which square pegs are in round holes except probably Berahino. We haven't got three right backs. One has somehow blotted his copybook, and that left an untried youngster so some cover was needed quickly. Martina may have been the best available. Remember that Rowett has had one transfer window only, before he had seen the players in a competitive situation and faced by a spectacularly unbalanced squad, left by the charlatan Hughes. I agree that there have been some odd substitutions, but there have been some good ones, too. It's not a precise science.

Woods has been a good signing. His average performances are good performances. Had a stinker v Birmingham and at most two other below average games. Other than that have to be really pleased with him.

I think that Woods performances have dipped since Shawcross has returned to central defence, he is sacrificing part of his natural game so he can operate as the extra man at the back, knowing that the guaranteed howler is eventually going to happen. I don’t understand why we have split the Williams & Martins Indi partnership when they were getting a good understanding of each other’s game ? If Martins Indi is fit enough to make the bench then he’s fit enough to play, drop Shawcross , reform the Williams/Indi partnership and give the captaincy and the responsibility that goes with it back to Woods.

so hopefully he can adapt the defensive side of his game bit and continually improve like Whelan did. He will need Hughes-type management to set him free and emulate Whelan, who of course also needed a Nzonzi to operate beside him. Now where in our team do we have that type of player?

Why people can't see that we need Ryan in the team is baffeling to me! He is our only player able to win most defensive headers in the box, and this is certainly needed in this division! He also seems our only defender able to mark an opponent in the box and also our only defender able to head the ball so far that it doesn't drop to an opponent every time which is a problem for both Indi and Williams. I agree Williams have improved, but he still has limitations when it comes to marking and heading the ball. The same could be said about Indi. I also think it's a myth that Shawcross can't pass the ball, but Williams and Indi are so great at this. For me Shawcross should be one of the first names on the teamsheet every time, but I accept that others see it diffrently of course.
