Tomorrow (1st October) sees my book 'Stoke & I: The Nineties' hit the shelves... Twelve months ago, I had what seemed like a good idea: send a writing sample out to a few publishers along with a rough plan of my yet-to-be-written account of Stoke's fortunes throughout the 1990s. Being a pessimist (supporting Stoke does that to you) I didn't really expect to get anything back, but I did- and within a couple of weeks had signed a contract with Pitch Publishing, a deal that came with an already looming submission deadline. What followed was a frantic few months of research and interviews, which provided me with an opportunity to meet some genuine Stoke heroes. Firstly, I had the pleasure of meeting Lou Macari (he even bought breakfast for me!) and spent a fantastic few hours in his company listening to stories from his two spells in charge. Peter Coates was also kind enough to give up several hours of his time and provide me with his thoughts on the various managers he employed back then, along with details of how he dealt with the various protests and even death threats during his first spell in charge. Along the way, I also managed to speak to Carl Beeston, Mike Sheron, Ian Cranson and Wayne Biggins, amongst others, and all of them were absolutely great to talk to- genuinely nice, down-to-earth blokes with a few stories to tell. At the end of all this, what I hope I've produced is a book that captures what it was like to be a teenage football/Stoke fan in the nineties. I've tried to steer away from a dry "Stoke won this game, then they lost this game" approach and have included numerous Stoke-related anecdotes from my own life (many of them highly embarrassing) as well as the historical stuff you'd expect to read about (The Autoglass win, the 92/93 season and the move from The Vic). Anyway, that's enough shameless self-promotion for now. The book should be in all good (and some bad) book shops next week, but here's a few links if you don't fancy leaving the comfort of your sofa... www.whsmith.co.uk/products/stoke-and-i-the-nineties/9781785314414www.amazon.co.uk/Stoke-I-Nineties-Neil-James/dp/1785314416Thank you to anyone who buys the book and to anyone who contributed in any way (there were lots of you!) When you starting on the Noughties?

I'm a lurker, not a poster from way back, despite being a longstanding fan, went to wemberlee '72 and all. Mostly cos I'm exiled and rarely see a live game. However i always look for posts or comments from T-dog due to their erudation and humour. I'll be buying in.

The laydee in my life has been given her instructions as to what to get me for a surprise Christmas present! I expect to find anything by the famous Trouserdog to be an entertaining read read - and the excerpt I have just read on Amazon suggests I will not be disappointed. Good stuff.

I was holding out for Benji's first book "Stoke City, despair in the dark wilderness years - 1863 to (insert today's date)". I guess I'll have to do with Trouserdog instead. PS The missus just shouted at me for not waiting til my birthday so she could buy it.

Finished it yesterday, really brilliant stuff.
Took me back to the good times (and the shit). I think we're about the same age so it really was like a snapshot into my own misspent youth.

Just finished reading it last night - excellent work, Trousers!
Brought back some great (and not so great) memories not just of the football, but the 90's in general. Very well written, and thoroughly recommended.

can this book be bought direct from publishers/writer to avoid giving any money to tax dodging companies such as amazon (and therefore more money to the talent)?

Just read the sample from Amazon it looks a great read. It’s on my Christmas bucket list. Just one small point TD.....in the sample you write about the Stoke-Arse hatred stemming from Whinger calling us a rugby team and Ramseygate. For us older Stokies the hatred goes way back to the early 70s Cup semis, their cheating, hounding the ref and general fuckwittery that cost us a place at Wembley 40 years before we actually made it to FA Cup Final. That still hurts many Stoke fans mate. Anyway we’ll done and I look forward to great Christmas read. 3 words........PETER F****** STOREY ruined my childhood! Look forward to this read He rattledc Mahoney's teeth as well
I can still see him now running through the fog to put the boot in
What a nasty bastard he was in all aspects of life

Just brought the kindle version and looking forward to reliving a great decade.
Oh, and fair play. Massive respect for having the idea and seeing it through. To use another Stoke anology it’s easy to talk big (Alan Ball, latter period Mark Hughes etc) but it’s another to talk the talk and produce at the end of it (Lou Macari).
Irrespective of whether it’s any good (although I’m sure it’s far more Macari than Ball) you’ve seen it through and now it’s there on bookshelves (and virtual bookshelves) around the world.
Genuinely impressed and looking forward to reading it!

Cheers, Neil (Trouserdog). What a brilliant read. Although i am somewhat older i could relate my teenage days supporting Stoke and the up and downs as well as enjoying the Macari days but my second biggest cheer/mental moment of the 90s was driving back over Thelwall Viaduct and hearing Alan Ball had resigned (Yes i left early after 80 mins thus not a true fan ). Some great interviews to get an insight behind the scenes at the time. I hope you are getting a decent pay off from the sentinel via your publisher as it uses stories and references from the book and lets hope it promotes to encourage more people to buy this fantastic book.
