Tomorrow (1st October) sees my book 'Stoke & I: The Nineties' hit the shelves... Twelve months ago, I had what seemed like a good idea: send a writing sample out to a few publishers along with a rough plan of my yet-to-be-written account of Stoke's fortunes throughout the 1990s. Being a pessimist (supporting Stoke does that to you) I didn't really expect to get anything back, but I did- and within a couple of weeks had signed a contract with Pitch Publishing, a deal that came with an already looming submission deadline. What followed was a frantic few months of research and interviews, which provided me with an opportunity to meet some genuine Stoke heroes. Firstly, I had the pleasure of meeting Lou Macari (he even bought breakfast for me!) and spent a fantastic few hours in his company listening to stories from his two spells in charge. Peter Coates was also kind enough to give up several hours of his time and provide me with his thoughts on the various managers he employed back then, along with details of how he dealt with the various protests and even death threats during his first spell in charge. Along the way, I also managed to speak to Carl Beeston, Mike Sheron, Ian Cranson and Wayne Biggins, amongst others, and all of them were absolutely great to talk to- genuinely nice, down-to-earth blokes with a few stories to tell. At the end of all this, what I hope I've produced is a book that captures what it was like to be a teenage football/Stoke fan in the nineties. I've tried to steer away from a dry "Stoke won this game, then they lost this game" approach and have included numerous Stoke-related anecdotes from my own life (many of them highly embarrassing) as well as the historical stuff you'd expect to read about (The Autoglass win, the 92/93 season and the move from The Vic). Anyway, that's enough shameless self-promotion for now. The book should be in all good (and some bad) book shops next week, but here's a few links if you don't fancy leaving the comfort of your sofa... www.whsmith.co.uk/products/stoke-and-i-the-nineties/9781785314414www.amazon.co.uk/Stoke-I-Nineties-Neil-James/dp/1785314416Thank you to anyone who buys the book and to anyone who contributed in any way (there were lots of you!)

I meant from Trouserdog! Oh I get it now Neil James is your pen name, like Rod Stewart used Python Lee Jackson, 'In a broken Dream'. An excellent Christmas stocking filler!

Looking forward to reading it.

Sounds great (even if I was already way beyond a teenager in the 90s )
When is it out in paperback ? As a pensioner these hardbacks are a bit costly :-)

Just read the sample from Amazon it looks a great read. It’s on my Christmas bucket list. Just one small point TD.....in the sample you write about the Stoke-Arse hatred stemming from Whinger calling us a rugby team and Ramseygate. For us older Stokies the hatred goes way back to the early 70s Cup semis, their cheating, hounding the ref and general fuckwittery that cost us a place at Wembley 40 years before we actually made it to FA Cup Final. That still hurts many Stoke fans mate. Anyway we’ll done and I look forward to great Christmas read.

Well done Trousers! I'm definitely having a copy one way or another, but according to Amazon it's already out of stock!!! Must be selling faster than one of Harry Burrows's shots. Because I'm already a great fan of your writing talents, I'm pretty sure that when I've read it, it will sit on my bookshelf amongst such treasures as Winger's portfolio of every one of his gems. Proud of yer, Boy, even though you do music so loud you wouldn't be the ideal neighbour. OS.

I think there might be a slight delay with the deliveries...I haven't had my copies through yet, so I imagine there's thousands (ahem) of disappointed Stoke fans queuing all around the town centres of the Potteries waiting for copies to hit the shelves. Maybe. I know the books weren't due from the printers until Friday so always thought that an Oct 1st release was cutting it a bit fine.

PS if you look on Amazon at your book Crouchie is whoring his book in an advert on the back of yours. Charge him commission.
