Burnley legend but also crucial to Stoke revival under Waddington.
Class footballer and by all accounts a gent.

I remember him in the early 60's, in the old First Division under Waddo. We had a collection of veterans at that time, I think Denis Violet was one, both were great players.

Saw him many times. An intergal part of the Waddington revival. A very classy player. Pretty sure his face is on the Oatcake montage with all the other greats.
RIP
Edit. Pretty sure that is him on left hand side next to the Stoke City sign, below Hughes and next to Mahoney, with Tony Waddington just below.

He came back as first team coach for a while at the end of the sixties as I remember ....he upset the first team players by making them clean their own boots ! 😁

Best player at seeing out a game I ever saw. If we were leading with a few minutes to go we passed the ball to Jimmy Mac near the corner flag and he headed into the corner and no opposition player was able to get the ball off him! Magic! We could do with him now. A real gent as well as a great player.
RIP Jimmy Mac.

I remember him coming, another of Waddo's £25,000 signings, and losing the first match 6-0 away at Norwich.
What would this message board have done with that result!
Memory plays tricks but I think we went on to be undefeated for a lot of games after Norwich.

RIP Jimmy
This made me smile from wiki
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> McIlroy joined Tony Waddington's Stoke who at the time had a collection of experienced veterans with the likes of Stanley Matthews, Dennis Viollet, Jackie Mudie and Don Ratcliffe. He arrived at Stoke with the side top of the table but his debut for Stoke was a disaster as Stoke crashed to a 6–0 defeat at Norwich City.
Imagine the outcry on here if this place had been around then!

I remember that prior to his arrival there was an 'Oatcake style' disagreement about whether we should sign Jimmy or a traditional centre forward called Frank Wignall. Many thought Jimmy was much too old for the money. Just let's say he wasn't. RIP Jimmy McIlroy.

According to Wiki we won 1-0 at the Bridge in front of 66000 crowd and Jimmy indeed scored the winner. It was near the end of the season with promotion ad the champions still up for grabs. Interestingly we lost 9 league games in total that season with 5 of them coming in the last 7 games. Imagine this board in that scenario.

RIP He is immensely popular at Burnley and many would say he is their greatest ever player. When my lad goes to watch Burnley he sits on the seat in front of him. Jimmy always remembered his name and spoke to him about Stoke and Burnley with great fondness by all accounts.

I was at that match and vividly remember Jimmy Mac and Stan Matthews running down the clock for about 5 minutes, they had the ball in the attacking end by the left wing corner flag and just kept passing to each other or getting corners and free kicks.Chopper Harris tried to cut Jimmy in 2 with one tackle ,but he just got straight up and took the free kick as though nothing had happened. RIP Jimmy.

I think it was at Chelsea and we won 1-0 in front of about 60,000 in the then second division, now the Championship.Very sad news. The only time I saw Jimmy was at that game against Chelsea which was on the 11 th of May 1963 and the attendance was 66,199. That was the season when due to bad weather our last game was on December the 26 th 1962 and we didn't play a league game until the 2 nd of March 1963. The original fixture was due to be played on January the 12 th 1963. I've still got the programme for the game and according to the programme which cost 6 old pennies our team was O'Neil , Asprey , Allen , Clamp ,Stuart , Skeels , Matthews , Viollet , Mudie , McIlroy and Ratcliffe. In those days the Chelsea ground was also a dog racing track and had only one stand. We won that game 1-0 with a goal from Jimmy McIlroy. Unfortunately I was at the other end of the ground and didn't see the goal clearly. I was 15 at the time and going to the game was a welcome relief from studying for my O' level exams. It was the first time I ever went to London on my own and I caught the early morning train from Devizes changing at Patney and Chirton junction and Newbury. On the return journey I got off at Pans Lane Halt as it was nearest to where I lived. ( Train buffs might be interested in those names from the past )

Rip Jimmy, remember him well with the likes of Sir Stan, Peter Dobing Dennis Violett, Keith Bebbington, Gerry Bridgwood and Don Ratckiffe to name a few. Waddo signed him as he did with those 'over the top' class players. 62/63 great memories thanks Jimmy. How about a minutes clap on 10th minute for him on Wednesday.

There is a very good article/obituary about him on the BBC sport app.
Still idolised at Burnley with a stand named after him.

There is a very good article/obituary about him on the BBC sport app. Still idolised at Burnley with a stand named after him. I'm always sad that we haven't gone down the route of naming stands after our very best players. Matthews and Banks would certainly have merited stands named after them at the Old Vic. I'm not sure whether, in a new stadium, stands should only be named after players who actually played there. If so, then I suppose (assumimg the player has to be retired) that Fuller would merit one? Any takers for my idea?
