As some of you may or may not know I have been diagnosed with terminal cancer and have only been given a few months to live. If you listened to Radio Stoke this morning that was me on the radio. If people can get behind what 35 Radio Stoke are trying to do it would be appreciated. If you play in a sports team or run a team or know somebody who does then please get behind the campaign that would be appreciated. Much love Russ Something to live by. You’re a brave man, respect to you mate.

Russ, I hope you're doing well. Since January my bloods were getting low on hemoglobin, on June 18th I had a colonoscopy that discovered I had Bowel cancer, on the 19th I had CT scans to see if it had spread, it hadn't. On thursday the 21st I saw the surgeon, he explained how he was going to remove a third of my bowel and join it onto the small intestine. I went into hospital on Monday the 25th and on Tuesday went had the cancer removed by keyhole surgery. Thursday test results on the cancer and 26 lymph nodes came back all clear. I am now on 6 months chemo to improve odds of the cancer not returning. 11 days from discovery to removal is fantastic, the NHS team that looked after me were fantastic. So Russ I hope you're having the same luck as I.

Lost my aunt last week. She'd been battling for a several years with some promise, but it finally got into her bones a year ago. A couple weeks ago she decided to forgo any more treatments, so it wasn't unexpected. I wish I could say she had a peaceful passing, but it wasn't. Horrible, horrible disease.

I used to work with Russ but admittedly had little to do with him except polite hellos and goodbyes. I'm hearing tonight though that he has now unfortunately lost his battle.

Thanks for letting us know. That's terrible news ! He always seemed so positive on the Oatie and tried to influence and improve things with Russ's Rules. Hopefully his final days were not too painful. Sincere condolences and best wishes to his family and friends. RIP Russ

I have some very sad news to announce this evening, unfortunately Russ Powell passed away this morning following his battle against cancer.
Russ spent the last 12 months promoting the Respect Campaign and introduced his own rules called Russ’ Rules which are below:
• We will always try out best • We support our team mates – we all do well when we work together • We will avoid arguing and respect the decisions of officials • We will play fair. Real winners follow the rules • If we lose we won’t make excuses • We will learn from our mistakes and get back in the game • We will end with a handshake • We will be the kind of people who make the world a friendlier place • We will have fun!
Please can I ask that all matches hold a one minute applause before their games this Sunday for Russ and his family.
Ladsandads and North Staffs Junior Youth League will continue to honour Russ every year by presenting a team with the Russ Powell Trophy for the team which continues to promote Russ’ Rules like he would have wanted to.
Russ was a very popular figure, loved by so many in Ladsandads & has left his legacy. Russ leaves behind his wife Elle and two children, Ryan and Georgia.
Alastair Padley Chairman NSJYL
Russ was amazing, for someone so new to our organisation he promoted Ladsandads principles far and wide in a way never achieved before. He was a great Ambassador for grass roots football and everything we stand for. For such a humble man his achievements were immense, he will be sadly missed.
Clive Dean Chairman Staffordshire Ladsandads
Russ was not only a credit to his family and friends but also Kidsgrove Athletic and the Kidsgrove Branch the Russ Powell FairPlay award will carry on in his memory Russ was and always will be an inspiration
Mark Porter Branch Chairman Kidsgrove Ladsandads

Gutted to see this news. Seemed like a great guy and was an excellent contributor to this message board.

RIP. If I'm ever faced with similar news, I can only hope I'll be able to face it with even a fraction of the balls that this man clearly did.
