Would it be a good thing for us, or bad, if Southampton beat Wigan on Sunday? On the one hand I would prefer them to be tied up in more Cup games, increasing the risk of injuries, bookings, tireness, etc. On the other I wouldn't like to see them have a boost in morale, so maybe a defeat would be deflating, particularly against a League 1 side. Even sparky can beat a league 1 side

Well... stick with my earlier thought I reckon, despite the stats for such late replacements my gut is he'll keep them up (not least because their first team squad is stronger than ours).
So much is down to personality at this stage. I know Wet Sham are in disarray as a club but I reckon Moyes will somehow keep them up too, don't believe it's permanent freefall. I'm feeling the same way about Woy at Palace. Swansea, Newcastle, Huddersfield - can we overtake two out of those three or watch them drag themselves down? Gut again is one will plunge but I doubt two. This goes right to the wire, I kind of don't want to think about it again till the Everton result is in.

Why should he care? We sacked him so he has a point to prove. What bigger point than to keep Saints up at our expense. Considering the number of times he said what great employers the owners were I would have thought he had little or no motivation to rub their noses in it. It’s not often you can say this about a football club but SCFC really did everything they could to avoid getting shot of him. Like a former former manager..?

The defence for one. Hughes had plenty good defenders. There were injuries but barring the Chelsea game he still had plenty of good defenders, Shawcross and Zouma haven't missed many at all. Football was shite under hughes, the improvement being that we're not conceding 50 goals a game whilst playing dross football. We have not played a team capable of giving us a good hiding we are now about to see if the defence is better it was symbolic the other night. Are you still so upset? No doubt you will continue to wish LMH well as Soton.....

I am a life-long supporter through good and bad times at Stoke. I have respected and admired many (but not all!) of our managers from Waddington to the present but find myself wondering how I feel about Hughes. He came in and massaged a solid team to produce some excellent results and displays. For the last 18 months he seems to have lost the plot and now leaves us: - in a relegation position and likely to go down - unfit and disorganised - with an unbalanced squad, many expensive buys unable to make the bench and a legacy of their wages for years - etc, etc.
He was sacked very late by the club, who stuck by him when most others would have got rid of him....he had every chance to turn things round. He always said how good the club and chairman were to work for and, I am sure, was well paid off. Now he takes on Southampton until the end of the season. We probably are going down and probably always were going down, who knows. Lambert has grafted hard, organised the defence etc and has been pretty unlucky....penalty etc, Butland error, Diouf injury. The only hope Stoke had of staying up was that there were several other teams in a similar position, including Southampton. By taking on the Southampton job Hughes is indicating that he feels he can keep them up and get appointed permanently for next season. That could easily be at the expense of Stoke. I would have felt much more positively towards him if he had stood aside for the end of this season then gone looking for a new appointment. He has not taken this job to pay the bills! I know he has every right to do the best for himself, but can I respect him now? Stoke were very fair to him, he was respected by the chairman and club and he respected them, he was treated well financially. He was sacked because he had brought the club to its knees on and off the field. Sure he could have had more money to spend but he spent poorly and other clubs have produced better results and more convincing 'teams' than he has with comparable or lower budgets.
We will see how things unfold in the next few weeks but my respect for Hughes has certainly gone down and taints the memories of the good times we had with him.

Southampton owners obviously don't read this message board do they? No but they might have a butchers at the Saints forum. A quick thumb down on there shows the fans are not too impressed with Hughes appointment. It's a throw of the dice. Three of their next four matches are away and they face Chelsea at home. For all their 'good players' according to some here. Fact is they've won just one match from their last seventeen in the league. Enter Lez and his consummate management skills

Glad that we no longer have to play them this season.
If MH returned to the 365 with Southampton and took the 3 points that we desperately needed we would see scenes of West Ham proportions.
I hope he fails to get the new manager bounce, as we need them to carry on struggling.

I suggest anyone affords him the same level of contempt he had and probably has for us, as evidenced by his last few months of interviews and the fucking state he's left our squad in. As evidenced by going to a club that has every opportunity to stay up at our expense.
Fuck off Hughes, I hope you fail miserably.

The ideal scenario for him is that they stay up, and we go down.
He'd love it - he'd probably have a Keegan-esque meltdown, if his dull-as-dishwater personality would allow it.
Fuck him. We are where we are, because of him, the arrogant cock.

No respect whatsoever he left us in a dire state unfit unbalanced unmotivated. He was backed by the board & bought very poor players who did not fit the system he tried to play we will probably suffer for years for his incompetence.I cannot for the life of me see why Southampton have given him the job its more of a desperate appointment than us giving Lambert the job.

If he keeps them up which is likely with the players at his disposal and we go down which is highly likely due to the players he has left here we should refuse to do any business with him, he will come in for Allen but not the other shit he has left us in his wank legacy, he set QPR back at least four years and has replicated his wankness at Stoke he's a grade A C*nt.

You'd think the way some people carry on the entire Hughes era was a nightmare. No,it’s not but had he been sacked in May 16 we might possibly be in a better situation now. As I said, it was very clear then when the thrashing’s began he had lost the plot and the downward spiral continued until his ultimate dismissal

I agree with the op. I think for the sake of a 2 month job and a good chance of relegation he should have waited until the summer.
The only 1% of truth in it I believe that as an ex player he still had fond memories of the place but the other 99% thinks this is a throwaway statement to appease both sets of fans

You said "By taking on the Southampton job Hughes is indicating that he feels he can keep them up and get appointed permanently for next season."
No he isn't - he's jumping at the chance of being paid upwards of £20K per week with a reputed £1 million bonus if he does keep them up. Whether or not he feels he can do it is irrelevant. If someone offered me £20K per week and a £1 million bonus I'd happily take the job for a few weeks - and I'd do it whether or not I felt I could succeed - who on here wouldn't?
I don't care whether he succeeds or fails to be honest - so long as if he succeeds it isn't at our expense. I want us to stay up. I'd quite like Wet Sham to go down for a whole variety of reasons - the owners, Lady Brady and Arnie to name a few. Beyond that I am not particularly bothered - us staying up is the important thing for me.
