I have been told some sad news today. One of the Oatcake Messageboard stalwarts, Calvin Palmer (Dallas Cowboy on this board), has passed away in China. Details are still unclear but his former wife Margaret contacted us today to say one of his friends had messaged her to say Calvin had died. From what is currently known his passing was earlier this month and only came to light when his friend's email went unanswered which was unusual and made them worried. Calvin was working in Beijing as a Lecturer in Journalism at the China Foreign Affairs University. Sadly he was found in his chair by his cleaner. Calvin was 64. I got to know Calvin on this messageboard. Originally from Penkhull he met and married an American woman, Margaret, and at that time was living in Texas hence his messageboard moniker. Margaret's job took her to Jacksonville in Florida so they moved there, and by some remarkable coincidence I met an American woman who lived in Jacksonville Beach. I moved to the USA for 6 months to live with my future wife and so was able to meet Calvin in the flesh and we became friends. I have happy memories of spending hours at a cafe with him supping coffee, watching the world go by, and putting the world to rights. Naturally most of our conversation revolved around Stoke City FC. Being older than me by almost 20 years he was lucky to remember the team of the 1970s which was the yardstick that all Stoke teams were judged by. He and I shared a particular dislike of Pulisball, another thing that cemented our friendship. Calvin was one of my messageboard heroes, up there with Old Stokie and Winger (also sadly no longer with us) as the people whose posts I'd look forward to reading. Sadly things didn't work out for Calvin in the end in the USA so he briefly came back to the UK. He was then offered a sub-editor job at a Chinese newspaper in Beijing so he took the plunge and moved over there. More recently he was lecturing in journalism at the China Foreign Affairs University. He was also a keen and talented photographer. I can take some solace from the fact that at the time of his passing Calvin was working in a role that made him happy and that he was well respected in. So much of his time in Jacksonville had been a struggle caused by the difficulty of finding work in his area of expertise. Calvin was a "character" and had a great dry sense of humour. I will miss him. My wife put it well when she said of him, "Calvin was one a kind - not everyone's cup of tea, but that's what we loved about him." Very true. I hope he's now somewhere in the afterlife discussing the lack of creative attacking prowess in Paul Lambert's team selections with the equally lovable Winger (Stephen Foster). Rest in peace Dallas. Take care mate.

Very sad new indeed. I’d never met Calvin however, we struck up a friendship in 2006 shortly after my wife had died and he wrote some amazing emails to me giving great support to myself and my children. Always a great writer with a good anecdote thrown in, shortly after he had moved cities and then lost his job and things were not cock a hoop he was still a great support to me.
RIP Dallas,, you helped me through a tough gig and I will never forget that.
