I've had a look at Go Outdoors and although they have loads of boots, most of them would fall apart after serious use, I know this because I've been underspending on these things for years and they never last, so I want a proper pair now.
I'm going to take a look at Millets at Trentham, but are there any other shops? I would have gone to Hi-Peak in Clough St, but they are no more...

If you’re going to splash out, get on that internet and do your research. You might have a bit of a drive to get the ones you want and properly fitted but as you’ve discovered, going cheap is a false economy. Good luck

I bought an inexpensive pair from Sports direct. A complete waste of money ! I now only use them to mow the lawns.
Bought a pair from Trespass outdoor shop in Stafford been fine. Don’t know if there is a branch in SOT

Don’t know if there is a branch in SOT I've got to say, Sports Direct would be the last place I would buy boots from! My last pair were by Regatta, and they have lasted six months, I think Trespass have a better reputation and I think they are also at Trentham so I'll check them out. A big part of says that I don't need to spend £150+ on a pair of boots, but my experience so far says otherwise...

Depending what you are doing I’d go with the type shoe or boot that looks like trainer as opposed to a big heavy leather boot. Obviously with gortex.
You get what you pay for and I would be looking at brands like Salomon or scarpa pricey but deals on line.
Gooutdoors does have good stuff but it seems to be end of line from the manufactures

Gooutdoors does have good stuff but it seems to be end of line from the manufactures I think I'm heading down the leather route as it seems they are the ones with a stiff sole. A rambling boot would be more suited to what I do, but I need to give more support to the ball of my foot than a more flexible rambling boot provides.

Take a day out to the lakes. In grasmere there is a Cotswold outdoor discount shop who normally have reductions on old stock. Plenty of walking shops in ambleside or Keswick.
Or there is a Cotswold outdoors at bridgemere (15% discount for national trust members or caravan and camping members)

I use a company called Uttings (get my fishing and hunting stuff from them) . They are online and stock lots of top quality brands, and they do have some really good clearance / sale offers where you can grab a bargain.

I recently bought some trail shoes from Merrell which I love now I have broken them in.
They offer the fleetness of foot of a trainer with the support and protection of a walking boot.
I should write their advertising for them, but genuinely I really like them!

Where's a good place to go for walking boots locally(ish)? I've had a look at Go Outdoors and although they have loads of boots, most of them would fall apart after serious use, I know this because I've been underspending on these things for years and they never last, so I want a proper pair now. I'm going to take a look at Millets at Trentham, but are there any other shops? I would have gone to Hi-Peak in Clough St, but they are no more... Nowt wrong with Go Outdoors. I got my winter boots from there - Mammut GTX. They have been fantastic; comfortable, warm and dry. I guess they may have a bigger range on sale up here as we are closer to the big hills which means more demand for serious walking gear. That said they do order stuff in - I'd recommend those boots if you need something that can take crampons.

Just got a decent pair of leather walking boots....for the first time in years.... from Brassingtons in Hanley. Got a pair of shoe trees for a tenner from M%S to keep them in shape

I found Go Outdoors to be seriously over priced, I saw the same pair of boots in Millets today for £30 less and the same pair online for £40 less than their "discounted with card" price.

Just back from Trentham and I've bought a pair of boots, so thanks for the tips and advice. The Tresspass boots seemed to be well made and well priced, but I ended up at Millets and was very patiently helped while I tried on about 10 pair of boots until I found a pair of Berghaus boots that actually fitted me. I'm sure I could have found a pair online for less but there's no substitute to trying them on and the help I got was worth paying a little more and it helps to keep someone local in a job.

I'm currently using a pair of Nike leather walking boots purchased from the Nike outlet at Freeport. I've paid a lot more for boots and they've not been as comfortable as these. I've had them a couple of years now and despite the neglect they suffer, they're still in pretty good nick.

I bought my karrimor ones from sports direct think £25 good walking boots and have lasted don't forget buy 1/2 sizes bigger because of the thicker walking socks also walk them in round the house a week before rub the seams with candle wax inside helps nopt get blisters at those points put a plaster on your heal first time you go out as gives your heal extra protection also if anyone can get them try karrimor running shoes long lasting link to karrimor web site link

Merrells are my go to brand. No other walking shoes/boots are as comfy on me as they are.

I do a lot of work on hills, fells and occasionally mountains, often on very rough ground, and I've always used Scarpa walking boots. They are pricey, as Salop says above, but I've always found them to be very hard-wearing, comfortable and long-lasting.

And another vote for Merrell's. I've both leather and the trainer type, they're comfortable and hard wearing. Several of the wooden huts at Trentham stock them

Several of the wooden huts at Trentham stock them I must have about 6-7 pairs of Merrell's. They just happen to be the perfect fit for me. Very comfy. I tend to find a pair I like and then buy 2-3 pairs. Disappointed with their current Bare Access 4. I bought several pairs of the Bare Access originals in 2013-14 and they looked much better than version4. I am sure v4 is a comfy shoe but just don't like the colour and the style details. Unfortunately, like all good shoes the v1 is discontinued so no chance of buying any more. Also still have 2 pairs of their blaze sandals. I wear these everywhere. Absolutely fantastic. I expect these to be discontinued soon as they have been around a while. Latest purchase was a pair of sprint blast shoes in gunsmoke white (am looking at my Amazon back orders page). Bought them straight off internet without having a look in the shop and they are better looking in the flesh.

Love Merrill’s also I make a point that if I find a pair of any trainer or boot that I really like I get another pair to fend of the effects of the discontinued syndrom
